I ended up really enjoying this one. I saw a friends review and was intrigued with the synopsis. I have a close friend that was a dancer for the Utah Jazz, my husband is a Marine and I studied stalkers a bit in college. So, I already felt a connection to the story before I even started.
Chloe is a Laker Girl, she loves to dance and loves her job but over the past little while she has been receiving anonymous gifts that are starting to get more and more extravagant. Things escalate to the point were she genuinely fears for her safety and decides she needs to leave town while the police investigate. I liked Chloe, she seemed like a positive type of person, the stress of having a stalker obviously has her stressed, but she tries not to let it consume her. She reminded me of my friend in a lot of ways, beautiful and full of kindness.
Eric has recently returned from Afghanistan and has also just gotten out of the Marines. He's healing physically and emotionally from his deployment and recent divorce. He has no interest in women and wants to avoid them at all costs. He does not want to help out when Chloe arrives on his doorstep and does his best to keep his distance. Which isn't easy to do when he is so attracted to Chloe's beauty and kindness. She of course wears down his walls and the two become close. I thought they had good chemistry and it was fun to watch their relationship unfold. It did bug me when she would call him "GI" since that feels more like an Army term and not a Marine endearment, at least to me. I was also a little bugged by how military wives were portrayed, having been a military wife for over ten years I would say that the majority are good, supportive wives. I've heard horror stories similar to the ones presented in this book, but I think they're pretty rare and definitely not the norm.
I liked the overall story. I was sucked in quickly with the prologue and opening chapters, it did slow a bit for me in the middle when she goes into hiding and the day-to-day with her and Eric became the main focus, but picked up again for the last part. I did enjoy the story though and it definitely kept me interested and turning the pages. I did figure out the stalker a little too early/easily, I wouldn't have minded if it had been more of a surprise. I appreciated the authors effort to write clean romantic suspense. I'll be checking out more of her books.
