Nikki Landry Swamp Legends #2
The Curse at Pirate's Cove
When one man’s treasure is another man’s Curse
Nikki Landry is turning eleven today, and besides getting chocolate cake, Papa had promised she could start riding her bike to school. But no sooner does she pedal away from her houseboat’s dock, than the entire front end of her severely-rusted ride falls apart. Papa can’t afford a new one, so she’ll have to put up with riding the smelly old school bus from now on…unless she can figure out how to get one on her own. Nikki’s friend Spikes has talked about an ancient ship sitting in the cove at Fog Island that he believed belonged to the pirate, Jean Lafitte. He tells her he’s heard a legend about pirates burying treasure in a swamp near the wreck. With every legend, there’s usually a dire warning…but legends don’t scare Nikki. While blowing out her birthday candles, Nikki makes a wish to find the pirates’ gold, and then writes it in her diary to seal the deal. But did that wish trigger a curse?
Join Nikki and her friends in the Louisiana bayous as they discover the truth behind the Curse at Pirate’s Cove.

The Curse at Pirate Cove: Nikki Landry Swamp Legends is a children’s adventure by Rita Monette. Nikki Landry wants a new bike to replace her damaged one, but Papa can’t afford to buy a new bike for her eleventh birthday. After learning about the legendary pirate Lafitte, Nikki makes a special birthday wish. She and her friend, Spike, head off to search a haunted pirate ship for treasure.
The two find the ship’s log and a metal box containing a map and key, but they ignore an ancient curse placed on anyone who takes the pirates’ loot. They return with friends, but are captured by Lafitte’s ghost, who sails into the past of 1814. Nikki worries if she and her friends will return to the future or will they walk the plank?
I like treasure hunting mysteries and The Curse at Pirate Cove is a delightful story. Nikki is a tomboy who likes exploring and adventures. She isn’t afraid to take risks and can be quite stubborn when she wants to do something. I like the charming description of the bayou. Rita Monette's writing expresses her fond memories growing up in Louisiana.
The swamp can be dangerous to persons who aren’t familiar with the territory. Alligators, snakes, and other wildlife live there, but many people don’t mind living on boathouses in the bayou where fishing is a main source of income. Nikki’s family lives in the bayou. The Curse at Pirate Cove is a nice book from the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends.

Be careful what you wish for – it might come true! Rita Monette’s first book, The Legend of Ghost Dog Island in her Nikki Landry Swamp Legend series may have transported us back to Louisiana, circa 1956, and into Nikki Landry’s world, but Monette’s sequel The Curse At Pirate’s Cove took it to the next level of adventure by taking us time traveling in the Louisiana bayous. A carefully-crafted story about friendship, the power of belief, and finding the truth, Monette continues to serve up her unique brand of literary gumbo with a flavor of down-home Cajun dialogue, and wonderful illustrations. In this story, 11-year-old, Nikki makes a wish which starts a chain reaction that sends her, her friends, and her dog Snooper into Louisiana’s past to deal with a curse, a lost treasure, and a nasty crew of pirates. Hold onto your hat, matey, it’s gonna be a bumpy Cajun ride!
The Curse At Pirates Cove would be a great addition in any classroom setting to learn and study about the history of Louisiana, and what it was like for the Cajun people during the middle of the 20th century. My stomach is already starting to grumble for Ms. Monette’s next Nikki Landry Swamp Legend installment due out September 17th, 2016, through Mirror World Publishing.

"The Curse at Pirate's Cove" is the second book in the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends and provides all the thrills and adventure we came to love in the series.
Nikki is now turning eleven and her wish is to ride her bike to school. However, she soon discovers that it is not in any condition to ride, and her father can't afford a new one.
Intent on not riding the bus to school, she discovers the legend of a pirate ship and a buried treasure. So, on the day of her birthday she makes a wish, and soon finds herself in 1814, amongst ghostly pirates in the Gulf of Mexico.
The book is a very enjoyable ride, full of adventure and all around fun.
I recommend reading the first book in the series before this one, but even if you don't, it still holds up perfectly on its own.
Great storytelling and I'm definitely looking forward to more Nikki Landry adventures.

This is the second middle-grade book from Rita Monette with the fabulous Nikki Landry as star. Life in the Louisiana bayous is never dull for Nikki, and this time she's tackling the legend of buried treasure and pirate ships! I love this series!
