Because this is my Dad, Dan Vanderburg's novel, I'm not going to try to up his ranking by rating it.

As an avid reader of post-apocalyptic and paranormal fiction, not frontier fiction and family sagas (and putting aside family bias), from a readers point of view, I really enjoyed this novel. It has just enough action/adventure, while telling a brutal story of life for a freed black man in the pre-civil war South and into frontier Texas. If you like clean frontier fiction, family sagas, or Texas
