I liked this crime/courtroom novel set in post colonial Ghana which is set against the background of a number of coups in the 60's/70's. The structure is interesting in that we know from the beginning that a prostitute has been murdered and a former politician/businessman Koo Manu is arrested and due to stand trial, part chapters are narrated by a journalist covering the trial. The narrative follows multiple characters throughout the book, but you never spend enough time with one single character to really care about them. This intriguing story hides behind a confusing storytelling device. The author’s use of the first person for several different characters mixed with second person creates a difficult task for the reader. More dialogue tags would certainly have helped as well. However, the story is so interesting, one can find their way through it and will be glad they did.
