SISTERS AT WAR
A heart wrenching new Second World War novel from Milly Adams. Perfect for fans of Lily Baxter, Ellie Dean and Katie Flynn.
Bryony and Hannah are sisters, but they couldn't be more different, and war has brought even more of a rift between them. Bryony is happiest where her family and loved ones are - at Combe Lodge, the family home - and these uncertain times have brought them all closer together. But Hannah is young and headstrong. No one will stop her from doing what she wants - and this time she's decided to flee to Jersey.
Even though Hannah has left, at Combe Lodge, everyone else is pitching in with the war effort. The family home fills with evacuees and Bryony is doing her bit, flying planes at the nearby Combe Lodge Airlines.
But despite all that is going on with war, Bryony knows that above everything she needs to reach out to Hannah. Only she will be able to keep her flighty younger sister's feet on the ground. But is Bryony too late to help her? Will Hannah ever come home?

This is titled Sisters at War but it's more like family at war. We meet a host of characters here. There's the family in England and the rest of the family in Jersey. Byrony (Bee) and Hannah are the two sisters and what a thoroughly unpleasant, nasty, selfish and self absorbed person Hannah is. She's the one on Jersey and her story is definitely an interesting one. Especially as we know the Nazi's invaded and treated the people very badly.
Bee is the sister in England and seems to be the main character in the novel. She lives with April and is best friends with April's son Adam. Throw in Eddie, who she calls Uncle, but who was a great friend of her father's and a handful of evacuees and you have a cauldron waiting to be stirred.
Milly Adams stirs it very well. She tells a great story and I literally couldn't put it down. I read her previous book but I think this one was even better. Can't wait for her next one.
The reason for the loss of a half star was that at times Bee was a bit too good to be true and she irritated me slightly. But that's only a small personal niggle really.

New author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this account of two sisters and their lives during 1914 and the war and their love lives. A little bit of history thrown in. Molly did her research thoroughly and wove the tragedy of war into a heart wrenching story. I am looking forward to her next story

I love any stories of women's work during wartime, and this one was particularly interesting. Especially given the vastly different attitudes of the 2 sisters.
Bee lives on the south coast, flying planes for her 'uncle' Eddie, her late father's best friend. When lack of fuel grounds the planes she helps out with the local boats, taking part in the evacuation at Dunkirk. Then she joins the ATA and becomes a ferry pilot, delivering war planes to the airfields where they are needed. She also opens the family home to child evacuees.
The other sister Hannah lives with their ailing mother on Jersey, and what a thoroughly spoiled, obnoxious brat she is! When occupation is feared she doesn't want to leave her boyfrend so doesn't book passage on the boats, expecting that Bee will rush down to collect her the moment she calls. Unfortunately that's not how it works out, and Hannah is trapped there under Nazi rule. But she makes the best of it, finding herself a German boyfriend and earning the scathing name of Jerry-bag.
The book splits between Bee's story and Hannah's story, and ends with their reunion after the war is over. A thoroughly interesting read.

What an unusual aspect to the 2nd WW - the dangerous lives of the armed trawlers and the women transporting planes up and down the country at great personal risk, not to mention an insight into life in occupied Jersey. Milly Adams seems to find such unusual and interesting aspects of life in the war to share with us, and she brings them to life so vividly

It is still early in WWII, when we meet sisters Bryony (Bee) and Hannah. Bee is at home at Coombe Lodge in Devon where she flies a plane back and forth to the Channel Islands ferrying holiday makers. Hannah, still a teenager, is currently on Jersey Island with her mother who is recovering from ill health. Jersey is where their mother is from and they are able to stay at a cottage on her family's land. It soon becomes evident that the two sisters could not be more unlike each other in disposition. Bee is hard-working, responsible, considerate of others; Hannah is self-centered, lazy - unless it is something she wants to do, demanding and very immature.
As the war marches on, we are swept through the evacuation of Dunkirk, the establishment of the ATA, the occupation of the Channel Islands and finally D-Day and liberation. Through it all, we see how the sisters react, what choices they make and how they change and grow. The underlying question through it all is will the war bring them closer together or will it be the final wedge that severs their relationship irrevocably?

Another one I was given (not the kind of book I'd choose for myself) but it was an enjoyable enough read. I think the author had so many moments and organisations from WW2 she wanted to include/pay tribute to it all felt rather crowded. ATA, Armed Trawlers, occupation, black-market, obligatory trip to Blitzed London, resistance, not to mention Dunkirk... Once the character of the evacuee arrived the story seemed to pick up and I did like the way the end echoed the first flight at the beginning.

Great read
I have ready Millie Adams Waterw
ay series and was delighted to find anotherxwritten by this author. Interesting storyline set in World War 2 - with it being set in Jersey and the English coast.
The main character being Bryonywho flew planes around the country to keep pilots supplied with much needed aircraft. A very brave girlfriend going to get soldiers off the beaches at Dunkirk.
Really good November researched.

wish this was actually 3 books covering more of the sisters individual lives before covering end of war and reunion as life in occupied jersey and the life of the female pilots during the war are both subjects which fascinate me....if anyone can recommend books fact or fiction re either please let me know
