I think this is a 3.5; it is well written but it is not coming back unbidden to inhabit my thoughts as I expect good books to do. One thing it does do well is to convey the fluidity of the life of people in their twenties, moving as observers or passive subjects of others as much as actors, from one episode and love in their lives to the next. One gets a sense of the lives of Chinese coming to the big cities and ending up living very much on the margin, but without the will to go back; something ...more

A vastly entertaining and fast-paced read - not the *highest* quality writing. Few plot holes and not much character development, but some fun twists and turns along the way!

I am fond of this bold new genre of Chinese literature, which breaks out of the safer molds of history and art. This is what we all want to read about from a Chinese author: overcoming hardship, finding love and meaning in life, the sensory overload and beauty of daily life in China. When reading this type of novel, originally written in Chinese, of course, don't expect it to follow Western literary rules. Thanks to the author's Eastern perspective, the Western reader g

Beijing: the capital of China, home to over twenty-one million people. A city plagued by dust storms and burdened with poor air quality due to pollution from surrounding construction sites and factories. It’s a place where an illegal copy of just about anything can be yours for a price. Here, fresh off a prison stint for selling fake IDs, and wandering the streets without a sense of purpose or direction, young Dunhuahg will have an unexpected encounter with a gorgeous woman named Xiaorong that w ...more

Welcome to the seedy underworld of Beijing. Far from the glitz of modern China’s rapidly rising super-rich, this gritty, gray economy is home to prostitutes and counterfeiters, hustling their wares on dust-covered, polluted streets. Broke and directionless, Dunhuang has nowhere to go after a three-month stint in jail for selling fake IDs. A chance encounter with a girl hawking pirated DVDs leads him back underground, constantly looking over his shoulder and running from the police.

This thin little book gave a glimpse into the lives of 20-somethings living in Beijing, who are just trying to get by in the hustle and bustle of the city. It chronicles the day to day activities of a young man, just released from jail, as he tries to eke out a living selling pirated DVDs. It painted a portrait of the fluidity and (sometimes) tedium of existence coupled with the human determination to survive. The story ends abruptly with no real resolution but all in all, a decently entertainin ...more

I owe a well curated bookstore for turning me on to this book. It's a short, good read with likable characters. Though it's supposed to be a portrait of young people getting by in Beijing, their experience can be applied to twentysomething city dwellers worldwide.
