Rate this book
Set in the 1940s, Ruby is a young black woman who, despite being raised in a devout Christian home, has become a product of life in segregated Alabama and has developed strong negative feelings about race relations . She has big dreams of moving to the big city and believes that the move will be the answer to all of her problems. When she learns that a relative has been sending money so that the family can move north, she convinces her husband to go to Chicago ahead of her with the hopes of him settling into a job and apartment prior to her arrival. Little does Ruby know, Chicago will prove to be her biggest nightmare. Will she allow a mysterious elderly woman (Widow Greene) to enter into her life and lead her back to a life rooted in faith or will she fall victim to her own pride and prejudice and lose everything?
