I have it all: my dream career as a Formula 1 driver, more money than I can spend, crowds who cheer my name "Teo Coates," and an endless supply of beautiful women to warm my bed as I travel the world.
I should be happy. I should love my life.
But none of it means anything without her.
One year ago, the love of my life broke off our two-year relationship via a phone call. No explanation, no apology, and no sign it was coming. She shattered me...ripped out my heart. And the worst part is that I couldn't stay to fight for her without losing my career.
However, now the racing season's over, I'm back, and I intend to reclaim my girl's heart.
There's just one problem.
The girl I left behind no longer exists. Plagued by fear, something has broken Raine Wilkins to the point where she's struggling to cope with each day. It's going to take all of my skill to gather the explanation I was denied a year ago and persuade her to reveal her secrets. But if there's one thing I can guarantee, it's I never lose. I returned to the UK with one goal: win back the girl I love, and nothing and no one will get in my way.
Recommended for ages 17+ due to language and sexual content. Each book in the Chequered Flag series can be read as a standalone and is complete with a HEA. Chequered Flag books are sport romances with elements of suspense, and are written with British spelling and grammar.

My absolute pet hate is being 'vaguebooked'; hinting at some personal angst then going all coy when someone asks you about it has more than a whiff of dramarama/look at me about it and I have zero patience with that shit. Just out with it, or keep it private ffs, but don't mention it then go all vague and evasive. Unfortunately, this book was the contemporary second chance romance form of vaguebook.
The prologue tells us up front that Raine has gone through some kind of ordeal and that as a result she's chosen to break up with the love of her life - an F1 racing driver no less - for his own sake. We're well past the 75% point before we finally learn wtf that was all about, and as most of the tension comes from Raine's ptsd-style freakouts, then I found it hard to sympathise with her or warm to her because I didn't know what was up. Was she just being a drama queen? I cannot lie, I was kind of irritated for much of the book which did affect my enjoyment I'm afraid. I really wish I'd felt tension from the second chance romance instead of trying to guess what her problem was.
That said, I did like the writing style even though this one didn't quite work for me. I'm sure if you enjoy the thrill of a tease then the tension in this will be quite delicious.
This is a complete story but part of a series featuring recurring characters.
I'm a first time reader of this author, and boy have I been missing out big time. I FREAKIN' LOVED Chameleon Soul a ton! Raine Wilkins had a beautiful life with the man she loved until one fateful night destroyed it in an instant. She walks out on Formula 1 driver, Teo Coates life without explanation. Little does he know she's shielding him from horrifying events that would affect his career, so he walks away to finish his race season. But she breaks both their hearts into pieces, and on top of that, she barely holds it together each day. A year later, he's back, and he quickly figures out that there's more to the story, as she's nowhere close to the girl he left behind, and he decides he's going to get to the bottom of it. His return throws her into the spotlight, and it's making things worse. When Raine finally reveals the truth of that night, will Teo stay or leave her for good?
This story is gut wrenching, and nearly brought me to my knees while in the process of reading it. The character development is great, with secondaries that I loved just as much. A fast paced, heart pounding, and well written flows effortlessly. The chemistry is HOT, leading to SMOKIN' sexy scene goodness. Mia Hoddell's talented writing style had me chompin at the bit early, with twists and turns that kept my heart racing the whole time. The next book can't come out soon enough for me, so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is a story of what happens when you love someone more than you love yourself and you’re willing to sacrifice everything for them. It’s a sad story…but a slight spoiler: true love wins.
Even though the synopsis is written from the perspective of Teo, much of the book comes from his girlfriend, Raine. I found Teo's story to be tied up in what happens to her. There is some trauma in the story (hinted at in the first few pages) and the repercussions of it. Because of how the story is constructed, I felt much more bonded to Teo's brother, who is also her best friend (can't wait to read his story). He is the rock in the aftermath for Raine - after her experience and the loss of Teo. In fact, I found myself disliking Teo much of the time because of his choices and behavior. However, this was my own perception of this character. I'm glad to say he redeemed himself in the end.
I think the difficult part for me was living through Raine's experience solely via flashbacks. I understand the author's intent, but it did cause a disconnect for me. I think if I had a bit more insight at the onset, I would have understood Raine and her decisions a bit better.
Overall, I liked the plot and all of the twists. It was a unique storyline and I'm interested to see where the author takes her characters next.
After reading the blurb about this book I had to have it. This book sounded so good and I can truly say that I wasn't wrong about that. I loved the characters in this book and the story line was one that will have you hooked. There were times where I just wanted to slap some sense into the characters, punch them for their awful behavior, laugh, cry, you name it I was feeling it at some point in this book.
Raine makes a choice in order to protect Teo's racing career by breaking up with him. With not much explanation he does what he can in order to move on and basically sleeps with someone new every night. Meanwhile, Raine is trying to overcome a traumatic experience while seeing in the news about Teo's conquests. Teo is coming back to town for a break and she plans on avoiding him at all cost, which may be harder than it sounds, especially when her best friend is his brother.
Will Raine keep pushing Teo away? Will Teo actually fight for Raine this time? Will Raine finally tell Teo what happened to her a year ago? Will Teo be able to handle it if she does? Will the person responsible finally get what they have coming to them?
This is a must read and I can't wait for the next in the series. Mia has done a wonderful job writing this book.
*Warning: May contain things you find spoilery. That wasn't intentional, but read on at your own discretion*
I am a zombie. Not four words I'd normally begin a review with, but true nonetheless. Why? Two reasons. Reason One: I am still awake at 3:40am writing my review. Reason Two: Mia Hoddell has ripped my heart out, thus, I must be dead.
Now we've got that established, let's get on to what I thought of the book. I am not sure I have many coherent words to form sentences right now, but let's give it a try. I am an emotional train wreck. My heart has been torn out of my chest, only to be replaced with the valves the wrong way round, so it isn't working properly. Why? Oh so many reasons.
This book is the kind that pulls your heartstrings from the very first chapter. I didn't know what to expect, with the story twisting and turning, this way and that. I was all bent out of shape by Raine's obvious torment. She's a broken, empty shell of the person she once was. Whereas before, she had a bright future with a wonderful guy, now she is but a shadow of her former self. Nightmares that plague her, dark alleyways that take her back to the night her life changed irreparably, people taunting her and making her life a misery.
Teo was meant to be a race car driver. It was all he wanted. All except Raine, that is. The two loves of his life were his girl and fast cars. Then, one night, his life changed. One phone call put him on a path to near self destruction. The only way to take his mind off things was to sleep with the grid girls in all the different countries he raced in. But they could never full the void in his life where Raine was meant to be. They were an easy lay, a quick fix, but not a permanent one. Then race season finished and he found himself back on UK soil. What followed was an emotional roller coaster for both him and Raine. Teo didn't know the truth about the past, all he knew was he'd never stopped loving one girl. Raine was living with Teo's brother, Dustin - who, by the way, is a wonderful character - and it seemed fated that the two would run into each other at some point. After all, upon his return home, Teo would want to see his brother.
What ensued was a beautifully written, heart wrenching tale of love, hurt, loss and redemption.
Mia Hoddell's writing is beautiful in a breath taking way. She has you gripped from the beginning and puts your heart through the wringer until the bitter end. I was meant to be on the blog tour earlier this week, but life got in the way and I had to reschedule. Then, last night, I said I wouldn't be able to finish the book in time to write a review. I hated myself for it because when I say I'm going to do something, I always see it through. I'd been reading all day and was only at 60%, there was no way I would be finished in time... Or was there? What I didn't know was that I wouldn't be able to put the book back down until I had finished. 3:15am, I finally read the last word, with tears blurring my vision and stinging like hell. I was an absolute wreck. Both because of staying up so late, and because of all the pain Mia had put me through. Raine and Teo's journey wasn't all rainbows and unicorns. It wasn't some fantastical tale of boy meets girl, boy keeps girl, they live happily ever after. Instead it was full of heartache and tears. It's the kind of story that brings about a hell of a book hangover. I'm still typing at 4:00am because I couldn't wait until tomorrow to express how I felt. The tumultuous journey this couple went through is something I won't forget in a hurry.
In summary, Chameleon Soul is a hauntingly brilliant book, that as an author myself makes me want to strive to be better. I want to bring out the emotions in my readers that Mia did with me. It was astoundingly written, with a gripping story arc, brilliant characters that felt tangible and real, there was an instant connection to them and their lives. I am left in awe.
Thank you to the blog tour organiser, Amanda, for giving me access to this remarkable story. My heart may never function properly again, but if I could rewind time, I'd live through it all again because some stories are just worth it. This one was of them.
If you haven't already grabbed yourself a copy of this book, I want to know why not? Are you insane? ;) I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a real love story. Because this story is no fairytale, that's for sure. But when is real love like something out of the movies?! It's about the ups and downs, the highs and lows and making it through the other side.
It's now 4:15am, it's time to stop my rambling and go to sleep, and so I bid you goodnight... I mean, morning... I'm off to dream of Teo.
Talk about an unexpected gem of a book! I was hooked from the very first sentence, until the very last! Chameleon Soul is the first book in the Chequered Flag Series by Mia Hoddell and if the other books are equally as good as this one it’s gonna be one hell of a series!
Raine Wilkins was happy and in a loving relationship for over 2 years with Teo Coates, an up and coming Formula 1 driver tipped for greatness and predicted to become World Champion, unexpectedly leaves him offering no explanation. Not only breaking his heart but her own in the process to shield him from the horrifying events that are best kept secret. Left with no choice Teo is forced to leave Raine behind to complete his race season.
Fast forward a year later and Teo is back, and this time the only thing he is interested in winning is Raine, but she’s not the same girl he left behind. She’s a shell of her former self, broken by the past, struggling to cope each day. Insufferable memories leave her nights tormented with fear, while her days are spent deliberately hiding within her surroundings to go unnoticed to avoid triggering full blown panic attacks. So when she learns of Teo’s return to England her carefully developed strategies go out the window, especially when Teo turns up demanding answers.
In order for Raine and Teo to move forward and rekindle any sort of relationship, they must confront their past, the only problem with that is that only Raine knows the truth behind what happened that night that followed her ending their relationship. Will revealing her secrets cause Teo to leave for good or fight for the girl he loves…?
I really enjoyed this book, the rawness and intricate emotions felt throughout made for an emotive read. I was so engrossed in their journey that I couldn’t help but feel the connection to them especially with how the author baits you the whole way through with regards to the events of that night and executes those details and emotions admirably. I loved the intrigue! I thought the progression of the plot was brilliant, nothing was rushed nor was anything drawn out. Overall a fantastic start to what I can only hope is going to be great series. Oh and the fact that it was set in England was even better, no offence to all you lovely American peeps but it made a refreshing change to read something by a British author and a story that was based in my homeland.
This is the first book I have ever read by Mia Hoddell, prior to this I hadn’t heard of her or any of her work, which is quite annoying and something I intend to rectify. I will definitely be looking into her other books.
I would highly recommend. I’ll look forward to reading book 2 in the series.

**I received a copy of this book from the author, but that did not influence the review**
This second chance romance had a great premise with the tease of a romantic suspense (and a very swoony Teo Coates), but took a long time to gear up and was just shy of living up to its potential.
The reader knew right away that something bad had happened to Raine, but we didn’t know exactly what went down. In fact, it took a long time for any type of details to come out, which left me frustrated. I wish I had been thrown a bone or two because instead of a mystery it felt like intentional vagueness and made me lose interest.
Soooo, that led to me not liking the heroine, Raine. I get that she had something traumatic happen, but she came off to look like a really self centered human being. She had let Teo go, yet expected him to come back for her. She expected her best friend Dustin to baby her. All the while she did nothing for anyone else or make any move to get herself better. I guess the bottom line is that I never connected with her.
However, I liked Teo. A lot. He was all kinds of swoony and sexy. Why he liked Raine was beyond me though. He was dumped but knew something was off…so I liked that he wanted to find out, but Raine was just so manipulating that I don’t know why he wanted her back even after he found out her reasons.
The romance was the same. On and off. Raine was intent on having nothing to do with Teo, but then said she loved him like 1 page later. It all happened so fast. I wish there had been a build up to them getting back together, which would have fanned the flames of the romace a bit more for me. However, maybe they were a good match because after Teo found out Raine’s secrets he started to play games. It took weeks of Raine trying to get Teo to talk to her, but then they instantaneously got back together. Lots of hot and cold.
The plot had so much potential to be a romantic suspense but wasn’t quite fleshed out enough. It could have been a nail biter, all the elements were there, but nothing major happened until 80%. If we had been given more clues or threats along the way I think that could have been a game changer for me.
Ultimately this was an ok read for me. The story never moved ahead and felt stagnant…like it just kept circling with Raine and Teo creating drama for the sake of drama. Now, some people love this so maybe this is a great addition to your TBR. I just wanted a little more excitement.
Chameleon Soul is the first book in a new series by Mia Hoddell in The Chequered Flag Series. It can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading them all in order once the rest of the books in this series comes out, as there will be interconnecting characters.
Raine Wilkins life changed forever over a year ago. She once dated the now soon to be Formula 1 champion Teo Coates for 2 years then broke things off with him when something traumatic and devastating happened to her, trying to protect Teo the only way she though she could. Teo Coates is on break for 4 weeks from Formula 1 and is back in his home town when he bumps into Raine after a year apart. Having spent the majority of that year trying to forget Raine the only way he knew how, by using other women to forget her, nothing could have prepared Teo for the feelings he tried to forget that all come rushing back. Teo having been unaware for the actual reason for Raine breaking things off, wants to get his answers now that he has her in his sights, and nothing is going to get in his way of finding out what really caused Raine to break things off. Raine who is still struggling with the aftermath of what happened to her a year ago, which is incredibly heartbreaking to read, tries to stay away from Teo and not tell him what really happened ,but when you love someone that deeply you just can't leave them for the second time. This is the first book of Mia's that I've ever read and I have to say that I absolutely loved it! Just from reading the prologue I was instantly hooked! I devoured the book as quick as I could (work got in the way of finishing quicker, I know the inconvenience of my job! Lol) I loved Raine as a heroine, no matter what she went through ( which was a lot) she was so incredibly strong, even if she didn't realise this herself sometimes, and Teo *sighs* he was so incredibly sweet! I had a constant goofy smile on my face from how much of a sweetheart he was! I loved Raine and Dustin's relationship also, they had such a strong amazing friendship that at times I felt a little jealous for how they were together. I am also looking forward to seeing what happens in Dustin's book! This book has it all in my opinion, a second chance at romance which I love, and the mystery of trying to figure out what happened to Raine that was so incredibly bad, she was forced to end things with Teo in the first place. My emotions were all over the place when reading this book which to me means I've just read a freaking incredible book!

Yes, I'd read the synopsis before signing up. Yes, I've read another book by Mia Hoddell, so yes, I had an idea of what to expect as far as writing style.
Still, I wasn't prepared for the full emotional journey this book takes us on -- as well as the emotional journey that sets us up for the next book.
Ms. Hoddell wrote Raine's character fabulously. A young woman who endured a terrible night and therefore forced a love to separate, shielding him from the pain and distraught the night brought her, is plagued with fears. She doesn't do dark and she doesn't do crowds. Our first look at her panic comes when she 'rescues' best friend (and brother to the man who's heart she broke) Dustin from a jail cell. Her anxiety was written incredibly well, and was only forgotten in the brief moments Dustin was making her laugh in the car -- but immediately upon returning home and having to leave the confinements of the car, her anxiety returns.
One of the things I found to be the best character decisions on Ms. Hoddell's part was that as the story progressed, as she allowed Teo back into her life, Raine still held that fear. The kind of fear Raine lives with isn't something that can be erased over night and I appreciated the fact that while we watched Raine grow strong, she didn't completely lose that fear -- but her strength was a wonderful thing to witness.
Raine and Teo's road isn't an easy one, especially when he knows she's holding back and wants her to open up. Raine has her reasons for keeping that night locked up tight, after all...
Hands down, this will be one of my favorite reads of the year. I connected with the characters and became engrossed in the writing. I love that Ms. Hoddell didn't blaze over the sport aspect, either, putting us at the race track a time or two, as well.
I can't wait to read the next book -- it's Dustin's, and that Coates has a lot of love and anger in his heart, and I just want to watch him overcome those black times.

I quite enjoyed Chameleon Soul in terms of the second chance romance aspect and having professional racing as the backdrop of it all. Raine was a victim of a vicious attack and she deals with what is clearly post-traumatic stress disorder with the help of her two best friends, one of whom just happens to be her ex-boyfriend Teo's brother. There's anger on Teo's end, especially with the way Raine ended things, so you feel for both the main characters because they're both still in love with one another, not having really moved on even though they've tried. The antagonist is obvious from the beginning, mainly because he doesn't hide the fact that he's a grade-A jerk. There's also a bit of a side story going on with Dustin Coates--Raine's best friend and Teo's brother--but it's left unresolved since Dustin's story, Twisted Mind, is next.
While I did like the book and the characters, I find myself hesitating to give this a higher rating, mainly due to the fact that I couldn't fathom why Raine didn't report the attack to the authorities, knowing who was behind it and what the motive was. Even if she refused to do anything about it, I would have thought that her two friends who knew, especially Dustin, would have done the right thing, seeing as a crime was committed. With her suffering from PTSD, I'm shocked that she didn't seek any professional help or therapy or that her friends didn't insist upon it, what with them witnessing just how bad things would get when Raine was struck with panic attacks or was plagued by nightmares. I also wanted a clearer resolution with regards to Aston Hattersey, but it was implied, so I guess that'll do. Four stars for Chameleon Soul. ♥
Raine Wilkins is alive and in the hospital when she must make the most heartbreaking decision and that is to break up with her boyfriend Teo Coates so he can focus on his career as a Formula 1 driver and not worry about her.
Then Raine runs into Teo again and she must face her feelings for him and deal with secrets from the past that Teo knows nothing about. Teo knows that his brother Dustin, who is also Raine's best friend, is aware of what is happening with Raine and he must truly decide if his relationship with Raine is worth fighting for.
This book is punched with emotion and deals with some intense scenes involving panic attacks. Raine is a girl living in fear and she is finally doing a little better but she is overcome with emotion seeing Tao and the aftermath of it coming out in the press. She is trying to rebuild her life and you just feel so sorry for her and everything she is dealing with.
I honestly feel so sorry for Teo as he has no clue on why Raine really ended it with him and is still in love with her. He knows that something is wrong but has no clue on what it is and how he can fix it and protect her. His career is important to him but so is Raine. His tension with his fellow team mate Aston Hattersey is intense and he knows he is dirty but can't prove it.
I love Raine's relationship with Dustin and Nadine, her other best friend. Their support is incredible and the way they are able to assist Raine and be there for her is so loyal and what you really want in friends. Their devotion to Raine is admirable and really got her through her difficult times.
The ending really left me with a bit of a cliff-hanger and I am definitely looking forward to learning more about Dustin in the next book!
This was an amazing story by an author that is brand new to me. In it we have Teo and Raine, two people who have known each other for years and love each other more than life itself. But one day, completely out of the blue, Teo receives a call from Raine ending their relationship and shattering his heart. Fast forward one year and the two are brought together again, but this Raine is very different than the woman he remembers. The two are faced with the choice to either confront their past in hopes of having a future. Or let the pain from the past consume them and ruin what they could have.
To say I was absorbed in this story would be an understatement. I read it in just over a day which is not the norm for me. I had to keep reading. I needed to know what would happen next. What Raine was hiding. How Teo would handle it. Could they find their way back together? It was just such a wonderful read as I felt for both characters and rooted for them to hopefully figure things out.
Teo was one of those amazingly supportive men who even when he knew things were being kept from him still managed to be there for the woman he loves. Raine was so strong even though she felt damaged. What she experienced was just so terrible but so well written by the author in the way Raine reacted and dealt with the aftermath.
There were some pretty fantastic secondary characters, as well as a pretty terrible rival. I especially loved Teo's brother/Raine's best friend Dustin. I can't wait for his story especially after the turn at the end.
I recommend this story for fans of race car drivers, angst filled love, wonderful friendships, and just an overall fantastic reading experience.
The first line in this book intrigued me. The author did a great job of teasing the reader throughout the book exactly what happened to shatter this woman. That said, we get to watch this woman deal with her horror and the loyal friends who help her.
I found myself feeling for all the people surrounding her as much as Raine herself. She made a huge sacrifice for the man she loves--even though he didn't know it. She has dealt with her life for a year.
Teo, took her at her word and left when she told him it was over. Now he is back and his Raindrop is not the same woman. What changed her? Why has she kept him away when her brother remains her best friend helping her cope?
Can they find themselves as a couple again? Is she broken beyond repair? Who is responsible for this pain they all have to endure?
I read on having to get my answers and hoping beyond reason the the culprits would get their without destroying Raine, her friends and love.
The answer comes and the author does a great job of ending this story as a complete stand alone while temping us with the next book in the series. I will be reading that one as well. The character has my heart already.
You will feel the crushing fear of Raine, the desperate need to help her deal by her friends, such loyalty is rare. You will love Teo for his tenderness and anger, and want to beat him for being a guy. Expect your emotions to take a dirt road ride such as those in the hilly desert of Arizona. A strong recommend.
This was a great love conquers all story. This is the second novel that I have read by Mia Hoddell and she has made a fan because her love stories are amazing. They are so relatable especially because they deal a lot with mental health issues-mainly anxiety and depression. I love that Hoddell digs so deeply into issues that most authors don't.
I will admit I spent a long time trying to figure out what happened to Raine (loved that name) that made her the way that she was. What horrible thing happened to cause her to have such anxiety and nightmares. I kind of guessed a few things like who was responsible and by the description of the scar what happened. Though I wasn't 100% sure and I was slightly off. Raine was an incredibly strong person, yes she had anxiety but that doesn't make a person weak.
I loved Raine's character because she was so believable to me. I could kind of relate to her because I have anxiety. Not as badly as she did but I think she will relate to other people around the world who deal anxiety too. I also liked Teo and the way he swooped in with Raine. Well I liked him until reacted the way that he did to the truth, that pissed me off a bit. Of course, he redeemed himself but he could have taken that better.
I was jealous over Raine and Dustin's friendship, yet another Hoddell friendship that was drool worthy. There really wasn't much that I didn't like about this book because it was that great. It dealt with subjects that a lot of books don't talk about, it had had friendship goals and a great love story. What more could you ask for?
I so was hooked on this book after just reading the blurb to it. I started it and wasn't sure I'd like it but as I kept reading, I was sucked into the storyline and had to know what happened. Rewind two years ago, Teo was just starting out in the racing world and Raine was his world. Just when things were looking good, Raine had her world rocked and gave up everything including her love. Teo, had no clue what happened but continued his race career. Raine, has been living in fear for the past two years. She doesn't like big crowds or going out in public. Only a few people know the truth of that night but one continues to destroy her and her future. She is determined to beat him at his own game but wasn't counting on Teo coming back in her life. He is determined to get her back and keep her in his life. This book isn't one of those with easy love and everything flows smoothly. This is one where they have to fight for what they want. I really like that this book isn't all about the racing but more about Raine and Teo. One thing I didn't like was they vowed to each other to fight but when Teo finds out the truth, he doesn't handle it well and Raine has to do all the fighting. I thought he'd be stronger then that but I was wrong. I can't wait to read the next one and find out what really happen between Teo's brother and his girl.
This is my first time reading anything by Mia Hoddell and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters are so well written in this book and the story line will totally have you hooked, I find sometimes the characters make me want to slap them up side the head for their behavior ,this story will have you laughing some of the time and crying the other times. This is Raine's and Teo's story ,Raine had the prefect life with the man ,that she loved until one horrible night that destroyed it all at once. Poor Raine walks out on formula 1 driver Teo Coates life without saying a word to him. She's only doing it to shield him from horrifying events that would affect his career, so he leaves to finish the race season. But both of their hearts broken, and Raine can barely hold it together each day. Then one year later Teo's back in town and they see each other and she's nothing like she was , and he soon figures it out that there's more to the story , then what she told him. So he decides right off to get to the bottom of it all .Raine finally tells him the true about that horrible night .Will he stay with her or go? The chemistry is steamy hot ,and the sex scenes are sizzling .I could go on and tell you more about this touching story ,but that would spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this story ,because you won't be disappointed.
This heartwarming story follows Raine as she chooses to let the love of her life go so he can follow his dreams. One fateful night made this decision for her and she has had to live with it ever since. One year later she is still suffering from the effects of that night. But she is over Teo, until she sees him again that is and she realises that not only does she still love him but that he may in fact still love her......
I haven't read that many racing books, only a few. It makes a lovely change to all the MC, Rocker, Billionaire and Stepbrother books I have read.
This story absolutely tugged at my heart-strings. If there is one thing I have learnt from reading Mia's books it is that she has the ability to write things in a way that will make you feel as if you are the characters experiencing those things yourself.
It really is a wonderful story and keeps you guessing throughout the book as to what actually did happen to Raine and exactly why she decided to let Teo go.
I love the ending, I won't spoil it. But it is a lovely end to a emotional heart felt read. This absolutely deserves it's 5 stars no doubt about that. I couldn't put it down. Oh the feels!! I didn't cry but it certainly had an impact on me in the most endearing way!
I most certainly cannot wait for book 2 in this series!
If you haven't read a Mia Hoddell book yet, then you need start now by reading Chameleon Soul. It filled with romance, suspense, chemistry and mystery.
Teo Coates, a formula one rookie driver and Raine Wilkins have been dating for two years. When one night, Raine calls Teo to break up with him out of the blue. What Teo doesn't realize is that Raine just made the ultimate decision for the man she loves.
One year later, Teo sees Raine again and he sees that Raine isn’t the same girl that broke his heart, she is now a broken women. Why can she confide in his brother but not him?
Will Teo and Raine be able to fix their relationship? Will they find out who's the culprit responsible for putting them through so much pain?
Read this wonderful book to find out these answers and see how Mia does a great job bringing everything together at the end of this standalone book. Don't worry I know your invested in the characters because this is just the beginning of the Chequered Flag series. The next book is about Teo’s brother Dustin and I can't wait to read it.
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review. Review by Melissa K for HEA Fanatics.
The author’s ability to draw you into the story and keep you asking questions is what really shines in this novel. From the first line, “I was broken…” you are frantically turning pages to find out why Raine is broken. The characters are wonderful and real-life—people you can easily relate to and the friendships are deep. We should all be so lucky to have such great people in our lives!
This is such a British book, and seemed wonderfully exotic to my American mind. I loved all the hints of life in London and the British racing circuit. Such fun!
I’ve discovered a wonderful new author and look forward to the rest of the series. I highly recommend this book!
I received an ARC in return for a fair and honest review.
Mia's writing is captivating and so beautiful that when you read her words you easily fall into the world she has created and find that the characters become your friends or foes. Your heart aches and gets crushed and mended right alongside them.
This book is no exception, my heart hurt for Teo, watching him become a heart broken mess was painful. But the story was powerful and so well put together that you felt that emotion through the pages.
This is a story of Love, loss, heartache and redemption. You watch a world fall apart to slowly be pieced back together again. It's not instant which makes it relatable and what I love is that this makes everything seem more believable and tangible.
This story starts off with a bang and then just kind of rest on that bang. I mean it isn't a bad story matter of fact there is a wide range of players here and that helps keep it interesting. A few you want to smack and others that are pretty awesome. But the whole thing is this, the reason this starts off as such a great read is then pushed to the side as a footnote and never really taken care of. I mean yes they have to fight to be a couple and all that and the author has skill but it came out for me as nothing special but a decent read. This is my first read by this author and Dustin's story seems like a goody so I might give her another go.
Lately I’ve been exercise my need to explore new authors. Sometimes it works in my favor and sometimes it doesn’t. When it comes to Mia Hoddell’s Chameleon Soul I on the fence and I feel conflicted. Before agreeing to give Chameleon Soul a read I consulted with Goodreads for some reviews. Upon doing so I found multiple that was glowing and that gave me the warm fuzzy feeling. While the idea of the story had so much potential I just could not connect with ANY of the characters. They were complete train wrecks.
Raine I’m sure if given more time and Xanax I would have grown to tolerate her, but since that was not an option she made me ab-so-lutely insane. I understand she was traumatized and beaten and her heart was broken, but she needed professional H.E.L.P. Was a police report taken? Was she given a support group flyer? The number to a therapist? Why not? Grrrr. This girl could not function she barely existed. The enables she had in her life only coddled her, which did NOT make things better.
Teo I’m not sure how I feel about him. He seem detached from Raine situation considering he claimed to love her so much. I could not imagine someone calling me over the phone regarding our relationship and I’m not banging down their door for a face to face explanation. Maybe irrational but I need closure before I can move on from situations and he just accepted some half ass excuse with no cause. GTFOH.
Dustin irritated me just as much as the two main characters, but I could tell he had his own demons he was dealing with while trying to his brother’s girlfriend. For the record I feel in was in an awkward position in regards to loyalty between family and friend. Completely my opinion Raine if she was not as self absorbed as she was she would not have put Dustin is that situation.
Chameleon Soul is a second chance romance told in a dual POV- my fav.The romance was painful and did not have a smooth transition. The suspense factor was there when the story opens with Raine in the hospital connected to tubes I immediately thought “drama is on its way. Bring it ”. My disappointment slowly set in when nothing came of anything. I believe it was well past to 50% mark before you even learn what happened. More set in waiting for vengeance or at least a soft form of justice to happen. It was just like sooo we’re just going to ignore that any of this happened , even tho we know who’s responsible. I was not ok with that.
I will say I have read books that I completely despised the main characters and still enjoyed the story. Unfortunately I was left with that “meh” feeling. Despite my feeling about Chameleon Soul I believe Dustin has his own story, which I would read, mainly because he intrigue me. That and I’m now vested in the series.
“Even if I wanted to comfort her I couldn’t. I didn’t know the first thing about what was going on. She wasn’t going to push me away this time because I wasn’t leaving until I got my answers. This time I’d fight for her.”
Fear is very real and dangerous. It clings to vulnerability and weaknesses, providing the perfect opportunity for everlasting scars. Fear causes us to commit to unintelligible actions based on the unknown or even worse—past experiences. Hoddell shares an amazing fictional story with her readers, encompassing love, pain and fear of a relationship after a traumatic experience. This story is intriguing, compelling and emotionally heart-stopping. By reading the words that Hoddell writes in this first installment of the Chequered Flag Series, readers are able to experience the turmoil that is caused by reliving one painful experience, causing detrimental impact—given the inability to overcome the fear of its re-occurrence.
Raine wakes up in a hospital, thankful that her two best friends are both there to support her. After much debate, it becomes apparent that Raine has been hunted down as a means to target someone else in the process. Raine’s irrational thoughts leave her with one ultimate conclusion—she is in the hospital because of her love for Teo. She has been with Teo for two years, but with his growing success as a racer, her life has been placed in danger. Her resolve is to end the relationship in order to prevent further attacks on her life, also an attempt for Teo’s. If he knew what transpired, landing her in the hospital broken and defenseless, he would never take the opportunity to live the life that he has strived so hard to build. After much debate and countless requests for reconsideration by both friends—Raine sends the text that will end it all…for an entire year.
Hoddell seems to fluently understand the psychological aspect of her characters. It is apparent that a great deal of research has been completed in order to make these characters credible or plausible in a balanced fashion. The ‘friend role’ that Dustin plays is very important in this story; Raine’s reality has completely shattered, but Dustin is piecing her back together as much as possible. Whereas, Dustin has his own inner demons, fighting an emotionally abusive relationship, Raine’s nightmares and her reactions to touch and sound can be closely related to what someone may suffer if diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress. The author is very descriptive in her wording, allowing her characters to become extremely convincing. It would not be difficult to find sympathy for several of these characters along the way.
Not only does the author succeed in character development and originality, she has created an understanding for her readers of what an emotional breakdown and reconstruction consists of. It’s not easy! An entire year of being afraid of the dark, afraid of others, afraid of yourself would be mentally exhausting. Due to the psychological insights and intensity of the story—Hoddell has a compelling novel that will shed some light on what it takes to fight the fear and pain caused by others. If you are a reader of new adult and college, this may interest you. A free copy was exchanged for an honest review of this fictional piece.
Chameleon Soul is my first read by Mia Hoddell, I may have had a hard time connecting with and picturing the characters at first, but that did not stop me from reading. I was grabbed from the mystery of the story line in the beginning, I needed the answers to the secrets and lies that were keeping these two characters apart.
Raine Wilkins, is struggling to keep herself together, the memories of what she went through a year ago weighed heavy on her heart. Raine believed at the time that the scar she received, that was suppose to be a message for the man she loved was best kept as a secret. She would rather walk away and allow the man she loved to keep living his dreams and reach his goal to be a first place Formula 1 driver. Will having her ex boyfriend's brother as a best friend and her nightmares and panic attacks happening anywhere, will she be able to keep her secrets much longer once he returns home from the UK?
Teo Coates had it all, a beautiful girlfriend that he loved and he is very well known as a race car driver. His girlfriend breaks his heart without any reason why on the night that he has to travel to a race, he decides to get on the plane and not look back. A year later after sleeping with more women that he can count and trying to erase the memory of the woman that he loved, he returns home. Teo never expected to find his ex falling apart right in front of him, she was not the woman that he knew. He wanted answers and he was not going to give up, but will he be able to find out what happened to Raine and stand by her once he discovers the truth?
Chameleon Soul had some suspenseful moments that kept me swiping the page, the fear and breakdowns that Raine suffers are emotional and felt. The passion is intense with Raine and Teo, which had me wanting them to fight for each other. Further into my read, I started to feel the connection with the characters, Mia Hoddell still left some mystery with one of them that left me wanting to grab book 2 in the series ( which I will). I am happy that they could be read as a standalones. 4 star read and the only reason was because it took me a while to connect with Teo and Raine, very good story line though.
"Everything to do with you is hard to forget, Raine. I remember it all."
Chameleon Soul is another winner from Mia Hoddell, an author who has captured herself another fangirl due to the humanity, the realistic struggles, and the grit and determination Hoddell weaves through her characters.
In this newest release and first of the Chequered Flag Series, Hoddell introduces readers to Raine and Teo, two characters whose past have left them both suffering from the hurt and betrayal of ending a long term relationship. After a year apart, the two once again find themselves thrown together, resulting in an immediate explosion of feelings, fears, and insecurities. As the two traverse the intricacies of walls they have both built, the fame that surrounds Teo, and the secret that Raine has been hiding, readers are taken on a beautiful adventure to discover that true love can overcome all obstacles when people are willing to open their hearts, communicate with one another, and work together.
This is a fantastic read. I raced through this in one sitting, cheering for the Raine and Teo as they worked to cross the finish line and applauding the overwhelming love and support the two had from Raine's best friend and Teo's brother-- Dustin. This is a must read for 2016. Filled with a couple of twist and turns, this is a story will give you a glimpse into the compassion and support a new groups of friends have for one another, the impact that decisions have not only on those who make them, but also those that surround them, and will provide hope for redemption through truth and honesty.
Mia, I am clamoring for the next installment. March cannot get here fast enough. Thank you for writing such powerful books with serious topics in which hope still reigns!
Readers, stay tuned for the second book in which more about Dustin will be revealed! Boy... does he have a secret to share!
Mia is a new author for me and well I've fallen in love with her writing and style straight away. The prologue had me hooked from the beginning as I was intrigued to see what had happened and what would happen.
Raine Wilkins had a wonderful life with a man she loved until events on one fateful night destroyed her in an instant. She walks out on the love of her life Formula 1 driver Teo Coates without an explanation. She thinks she's protecting him and his career.
A year later he's back for his end of season break and come he sees her he realises that she is hiding something awful and he wants to get to the bottom of it. He let her go without a fight before but now he's going to fight for her and chase her demons away. But how is he going to handle the truth? Will he stay or leave her for good??
What a story this was, it was completely heart wrenching, your heart broke for Raine. She was so strong considering everything she's been through. The chemistry between Teo and Raine was so hot and sizzingly, it was a beautiful love, a true love. The way he stayed strong for her despite not really knowing what was going on or what had happened was beautifully writtten.
I was rooting for them from start to finish, even when Teo acted like an idiot running away after it was all revealed.
The twists and turns in this book was simply brilliant. You were fed little bits throughout keeping you engrossed and in anticipation of what would happen next. Once I started this book I could barely put it down despite the late hour.
Mia is now added to my favourite author list and I can't wait to read Dustin's story next.
