Traces the history of church architecture, describes typical church accessories and architectural details, and explains how their designs reflect the beliefs of their builders
Beautiful little book detailing the history of churches in England. More for the beginner who wants to understand the differences in styles of buildings throughout the last thousand years. Lots of nice pictures, and an appendix detailing 100 + churches to see in Great Britain.
This is an excellent looking book. But appearances can be deceptive. The book has a decidedly protestant vision, which is odd given the history of church building is Catholic. An author who cannot understand the way a medieval Christian thought, with respect to such things as relics and what the author calls the 'worship of Mary', is not fit to review the churches the medieval Christian built. I have enjoyed the beautiful pictures, though, and the book goes back to the library now.
