His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson's poems.
As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.

Favourites: “Two Old Bachelors”, “The Jumblies” (I’d love to see the hive of silvery bees and the lovely monkey with lollipop paws…) and “Incidents in the life of my Uncle Arly”. Alan Bennett made a wonderful deadpan recording of the best-known poems many years ago, a perfect rendition. My elder son also once bought me the lovely illustrated Folio Society Lear.

I enjoyed this book and the illustrations. I still think Limericks need to be ribald and Lear's carefulness even for children is too Victorian.
