This is one of those Hallmark miniature books that are in the greeting card section. My brother-in-law Buzz gave it to me this past weekend when my wife and I hosted a family reunion here in Kansas City. We had families come in from Oregon, Oklahoma, Missouri & Ohio.
My edition is from 2019; the book was originally put out in 2004. The book has a cool cover that's dimpled like a golf ball. The "excuses" run the gamut from actual reasons for a poor shot to unlikely to just silly. Here are several examples:
#87: I'm having trouble adjusting to these left-handed clubs - but I did save twenty dollars.
#90: I have tennis elbow. What the heck is tennis elbow anyway? (I'm told that golfer's elbow is generally a problem for better golfers and tennis elbow for poorer golfers - I got the latter.)
#120: I can't play my best when I have to wait between shots. What's taking those guys so long? (A legitimate beef.)
#165: When I'm on the practice tee, the ball always goes straight.
#173: The wind keeps shifting direction when I hit.
#199: Rough should test you, not penalize you one stroke. This is unfair.
#247: My children don't count my whiff.
#297: I got whiplash when you started the cart. Now my neck hurts.
#311: That putt was short because I'm using those South American golf balls. It was a whole revolution short.
#393: The water in the creek wasn't this high last week. That would have been a great shot. (Once, playing with my Dad in Illinois as a teenager in March, I had the opposite happen. My shot disappeared into a creek short of the green, only to bounce out and onto the green. I assumed it had hit a rock, but as we crossed the bridge, we saw that the creek was still frozen.)
#445: I only took up the game to get away from the house. I don't really care if I'm good. (Golfer spouses, a word to the wise. If it doesn't matter how long your spouse is gone, no problem. But if he or she isn't getting things done at home, please know - a round of golf does not take 7 hours.)
