I expect a more bang of a buck from a Victoria Vane novella. Both leads were quite likable characters , but the plot overall fell flat.

If this is the same author who wrote the Georgian DeVere romps (and all indications are that it is), I'd like to know what has happened. Where's the sass, spice, piquancy and general fun of that earlier series?

This is the second HR novella by Vane that I've downloaded in the past couple of months. The first one was THE REDEMPTION OF JULIAN PRICE and now this one. The best thing they have going for them is the 99-cent price. Other than that, they are nonstarters in the HR genre. Boring plots,

Whats a woman to do when she pledges to wait for a man and then he backs out at the last minute? Well, Mariah plans to marry an eligible gentleman, that is if her heart ever spots breaking over Nick. Nick has caused Mariah no end of heartbreak and that alone made me not very fond of him. He was putting his career above his love for Mariah and although well intentioned I couldnt help thinking he was making a mistake.

Victoria Vane has given us another well written, steamy book. This is a quick

A Pledge of Passion is the second book in the 'Rules of Engagement' series by Victoria Vane. It can easily be read as a stand alone book.

This is the story of Lady Mariah Morehaven. She is a baroness in her own right and doesn't plan on marrying because she can never be sure if a man will want her for herself or her fortune. She's had a difficult time of it of late because her father has been bedridden for two years and it's fallen to her to look after him and her mother. She's had little social

I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. I loved Nicolas And Lady Mariah' s story. He is a simple gentleman with no title and no income, She is an heiress and a huge dowry. They meet while on the way to a ball with Mariah and her cousin . After sharing a passionate kiss he declares his love for her and asks her too wait for a year for him so he can try and make a substantial income and have a pretty good position to support a wife . He manages to secure a ...more

Reading this story pulls you in and makes your time fly by. This is a true Romance and it has a bit of sex in it. I would say it is for a mature read. I have fallen for Victoria and her books. You can trust her to give you a really good read. Her people are spot on! Willow liked Nicholas. She is an heiress and he is far from that. A true male who won't marry if he can't take care or protect his love. Spoiler. They make a pact to marry in a year. He is stuck in Italy. His employer, Lord Rochford, ...more

Lady Mariah Morehaven is going to travel to a house party with her best friend. Everyone has convinced her that she needs to meet some eligible men, maybe find a husband. That friend is trying to get out of her betrothal. When someone manipulates the travel arrangements Mariah spends time with a very attractive man.
Mr Nicolas Needham is a penniless secretary, just above the servants but not quite the nobility. All he has is his honour and his pride. As much as he wants Mariah he refuses to

I liked Nick I thought he was a good man, he did like to tease his woman a lot, "yis sensuous lips curved in a lazy smile. "I thought I declared myself to you in the most uncertain terms. If I have failed to communicate the depths of my devotion, perhaps I should try again?" I enjoyed this book, I liked Mariah and Nick.

Just the Right Amount of Everything

I read this book immediately after reading the first book in the series (A Breach of Promise). Although this book can stand alone I highly recommend reading the first book not only because it gives a proper insight to the characters but the storyline is great as well. The plot for this second book has none of the excitement of dark brooding, scarred heroes, no kidnapping, no humongous misunderstandings and no epic drama BUT the story was sweet and endearing and

Sweet historical romance with obstacles that didn't really move me and a nice pair that made it difficult without real reason. But it was a nice read for a Sunday afternoon.

Okay, I'll start by saying that I liked this book, and I enjoyed it - to a point. I didn't love it, and I didn't totally dislike it, but I was disappointed when I'd finished. I really wanted to like it more than I did as the blurb had looked promising.

Nick and Mariah were decent enough characters but could've done with a slightly more challenging plot to bring them out and polish them up a bit more.

Lady Mariah Morehaven never had a proper come out because her father fell ill, and she has been leading a lonely life since then. It all happened ten years before; she had fallen in love with Nicolas Needham, she was sure they were going to be married, but he old her it was over, and he broke her heart. Nicolas had, what he thought at his young age, reasonable reasons to give Mariah the cut. Mariah has to marry to secure her inheritance and her newly acquired title, and she has caught someones ...more

A delightfully quaint historical romance showing Nicolas following his code of honor by keeping his pride and self-respect at all times to the point of losing the women he loves. Though at first appearance you may feel he is nondescript the reader will discover how deep his character runs and admire him for what he feels is the right thing to do.

Mariah is a quiet refined young lady who loves the country and doesn't understand the way society works which causes her to become awkward when she is

My Thoughts....

This was a beautifully written historical romance story that will keep you turning the pages to see what was going to happen next for Lady Mariah Morehaven and Nicolas Needham. If there were
ever two people to be together ...this was the couple but how was that to happen for them? I liked

Lady Mariah Morehaven never made her debut because her father fell ill. She has been invited to attend a house party with her cousin Lydia and her cousin's future mother-in law, Lady Russell. As they are entering the coach, Lydia's intended (who she desperately wants to end their engagement) sabatoges the traveling arrangements forcing Mariah to ride with his secretary Nicholas Needham.

Nicholas is a younger son and Mariah is a baroness in her own right. During the house party, they fall in

First, let me say, I am giving this book 3 stars and this was a difficult decision for the book is worth reading even with the 3 star rating.

The author has a great way of telling a story but perhaps the characters could of been a little more developed and the book was predictable most of the time. I was a little anxious for there was never really any big boom or action. So lets get to the good part.

It is a light easy read. One you will take along for the beach and you shall enjoy it there. It

The blurb was promising and I really enjoyed the first book in the series. The problem was that I was't invested in these characters, so I DNF at 20%. Not even the dialogue was engaging enough to keep me reading. I had a good time with other works by Victoria Vane, I hope I like her next novel!

Another wonderful Historical Romance by Victoria Vane. I have been waiting a long time to find out how Nicolas and Mariah will get their HAE. These two fascinating characters are truly meant to be together and when they meet again it is a complete surprise to Nicolas that Mariah is the bride that his superior has sent him to negotiate a marriage contract with. Mariah was devastated when Nicolas left her and now he is back and all the old feeling resurface. Will Nicolas jeopardize his career for ...more

Two characters that were obviously meant to be with each other, find that fate has brought them together again. Much to Mariahs chagrin.

I found this a very pleasant read, with dialogue that made me smile and secondary characters that were endearing. I found Lady Russell to be a funny character with matchmaking agenda and her penchant for laudanum while traveling to conveniently leave our two characters alone in the carriage.

This is book 2 in the Rules of Engagement series and can be read as a

Sweet love story. This is the second book I've read by this author, the first an even shorter novella. This is the second book for the series. Both were good if slightly repetitive with similar writing prose, but not at all distracting to the story. I'd recommend this book to any romance book lover for a ab quick read. With a little more effort there could of been even greater depth of chemistry and characters, aside from that I have no complaints.

Mediocre, Bland, Boring, Predictable.... the list goes on and on. There really isn't much I can say about this book in a positive light. It moves as slow as molasses, the characters are unbelievable, and the dialogue is beyond pathetic.

I want to write a lengthy review on how much this book irritated me, but it isn't worth the energy. I will say this, I wasted almost a week trudging through this mess trying to hold out for that silver lining that would somehow make everything ok. It never came.

This book was okay. I never fully connected with the main characters. The intimate scenes, of which there was very few, were sizzling hot. I loved that about the book. If you prefer a completely sweet read you may want to steer clear of this book.

Cute but predictable. Easy read. Good dialogue. Characters are as expected, as is the outcome. Nothing special here. Plain everyday historical romance. No recommendations.

An agreement made in starlight, misplaced nobility, and a second chance at true happiness. A romance that is all about fate playing a helping hand in romance.
