Harper Allen is a Canadian writer of romance novels. She is a four-time nominee for a Career Achievement Award by Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine and her novel Dressed To Slay was named the magazine's choice for Best Silhouette Bombshell of 2006.
Her Irish ancestry lends them a touch of Celtic mysticism, while her work as a reporter in the criminal court system gives her books a darker edge, first and foremost each one is a story about a man and a woman falling in love and holding on to that love. Her characters have always been real people with real flaws, desperately struggling to find the love that will redeem them - and for that Harper need look no further for inspiration than her own life.
Harper grew up in a blue-collar motor city, and with comments such as "Does not play well with others" on her grade-school report cards. Underneath the motorcycle leathers and the rose tattoo, beats the heart of a true romantic. The day she met the man who eventually became her husband, she told her sister, "I've just met the man I'm going to marry. How long do you think it'll take him to figure it out?" They married, and had little kids, who aren't the first ones picked for the volleyball team. Her idea of a great date with her husband is going to a baseball game. Her idea of a great baseball game is any one in which the Red Sox win.
This was an excellent book. There were moments that had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Susannah, Danny, and Tye. It was a refreshing to read about a character like Susannah who stood strong in her beliefs, and morals. To her if she wavered to the left or right in her beliefs, she would no longer be the person she was. I loved this book, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Here is one of my favorite parts from the book – “You love her, don’t you?” Momentarily diverted from her own problems, Susannah waited for his reply. He looked away. “More than I realized,” He said shortly. “When I saw she’d been hit all I could think was that if she survived, I’d spend the rest of my life proving it to her.”
Here is an action scene from chapter 11 Glancing over her shoulder as she ran, Susannah saw the pain-crazed gelding, its nostrils flared and ropes of foamy spittle swinging from its mouth, bearing down on her and her baby. She did the only thing she could think of. She let herself fall to her knees and then fully to the ground, her body curved protectively around Danny, who was now crying at the top of his lungs. Squeezing her eyes shut, she waited for the hammer-like hooves to come slicing down, her numb lips moving silently in prayer. Take me, Lord, but Please save my little boy.
This book was exactly what it was supposed to be and what I thought it would be. A cheesy kind of bad love story. Very innocent very clean. I would not read this again as in the beginning, it made very little sense to me tbh. From what I got, it took place in New Mexico and this woman is being stalked. After a friendly stranger helps deliver her baby she realize that she’s falling in love with him.
This book had me confused on the time period it was supposed to be taking place In. The main character Susannah gave me like 1800s house wife vibes but they had things like cars and tattoos and all of that normal stuff. The story was a hot mess and kind of all over the place but over all for less than 250 pages I’m not even mad. These little cheap books are just quick simple mindless reads.
I like the occasional 'fluffy' read. Although Susannah got on my nerves there were some twists in a fast moving story. The cover on my book was different, I had a boring cover.
