I saw this at the Salvation Army and passed it up because I have and have read several books on Bible study, and I felt a little funny about the title while purchasing this as a white woman. But it stayed on my mind so I requested it through library loan. What an excellent and accessible Bible study guide this is! I so wish I had purchased it when I saw it. The author does make a caveat in the beginning that she hopes men and women of all races will pick up the book in order to benefit from her simple Bible study plan, though many of her external quotes and cultural examples are targeted to Black women.

This is a short book full of great information. The first few chapters discuss the why of studying, and the second part of the book outline her seven principles of Bible study: preparing the passage, and then studying the people, places, plot, problems, purpose, and personal application. Her method has one set up a simple journal where they use the primary Bible passage, cross-references, and any additional dictionary/encyclopedia/study materials they may have access to.

This is one of the first Bible study guides that I have actually felt was doable for someone who doesn’t always have the luxury of uninterrupted study time.
