I played this before fully reading the rule book. I took my friend's word for how it works.

Now having read it, I find it very spot on his explanation. It is a great rule set: quick to play and not bogged down in tables and rolls though there are a fair number. These set up the variety so wide that the five games we played were not repetitive.

We have not played in a campaign but it reads well and smooth.

An excellent skirmish game, with particular emphasis on building a story around why combat is happening. The mission system in particular is wonderfully detailed, with a huge amount of variety and opportunity for terrian modelling. it's also the kind of game where you could use any sci-fi model A-La Frostgrave. I'd recommend for those looking to build up a campaign system between small numbers of models. very impressed. ...more

I bought the first set of Alternative Stars figures from Alternative Armies. Then I started to consider what rules I could use when I recalled an as yet unread copy of Osprey Wargames' Rogue Stars.

After reading the rules, the size of the games is perfect for those of us with limited time and space; a 3-foot by 3-foot board with four to six figures per side. I might even get sufficient figures ready for the table within a month.

The rules remind me of the author's Song of Blades system, only using

Felt a little bland, and maybe a little rushed. Lots of tables, which doesn't particularly bother me, but very little in the way of examples, which tend to be rather important when you look at miniature rulesets. After a read through, I still have a few questions about the core gameplay that I would need to resolve in order to even start a game. That's something that shouldn't be true for a rules set. ...more

This is a fun sci-if skirmish game. There is a lot here for fans of this genre. The fact that there are so many types of scenarios and environments would keep this game fresh for a number of play sessions. The game is figure agnostic so if you want to have lizardmen fighting military grunts, you’ll be able to.

The book is also fun to read and imagine the possibilities if you’re like me and don’t have a wide variety of possible opponents.
