The Standish Clan #3

Promise Me the Stars

Rate this book
Scott Standish has been a rambling man since his mother got sick way back when he was eighteen. Unable to watch her die, he left home after graduation and kept roaming.

But when he goes home to Harkness, New Brunswick for a Thanksgiving visit, he discovers he’s got a stowaway—ten-year-old Sid the Kid, his sidekick from the job he just left. For once, moving on had been hard, and not just because of Sid. The attraction between him and Sid’s mother, chef April Morgan, is electric. But she’s a single mom needing stability, and he plans to keep moving.

When April comes to Harkness to retrieve Sid, she does so in a car packed with all her worldly possessions, having been fired from her position over her daughter’s behavior. When Scott realizes her predicament, he offers her domestic employment.

With no place to go and no one to turn to, April and Sidney make a home at the Standish farm. Her daughter is thrilled, rapidly becoming attached to the dog and the family despite April’s reminders that it’s only temporary. Scott Standish might be tied to the farm for a few months, but she knows he’ll settle nowhere, least of all in Harkness. April can’t afford to take a chance with her heart, or her daughter’s. So she has no choice but to fight the yearning that grows stronger inside her every day.

What a lovely heart warming book!

Scott has a hard time staying in one place and making connections with people. The only people he seems to miss are is family, but not enough to visit often. This Thanksgiving he realized how his rambling ways have put a strain on his brother, so Scott agreed to come back to run the farm for a few months. First he must go get his things and finish up his last job, and say goodbye to the woman and her daughter who are making it hard to leave. He thought he made a quick departure until he found a stowaway.

I loved Scott from the first time we met him in the first book of this series. I can not imagine being young, losing your parents and being uprooted to go live in such a small town. You can tell he craves to belong one place, but is terrified to dream. Scott finds a kindred spirit in April, and realizes he at least had people who loved him. I loved that April was an inpired baker, and really wish some of her recipes were in the back of the book.

Where Titus and Ocean were comically awkward at times, Scott and April are tender. Where Ember and Jace were hot with emotion, Scott and April were guarded with their true feelings. I should not have favorites, but I do - I just love this couple.

Then there was Sid the Kid. Sometimes children are just add ons in books, but Sid is the most crucial secondary character in this book. She is funny, she is tempermental, she is whistful and she is the perfect vehicle to help show the growing relationship between Scott and April.

This book's focus is on their love and relationship with a smattering of sexy times. We have wonderful moments with towns people and the focal characters from the other titles. I just love this town, and I keep on meeting new people I want to read more about.

Magnificient, just the perfect contemporary read when you want something to warm your heart and keep you entertained. My only disappointment is I am all caught up in this series and I don't have another one to read.

Well done Norah Wilson, a job very well done.

Loved this story!! Scott and April were great characters but April's young daughter Sidney stole my heart! Scott has suffered a lot of loss in his life. First his biological parents then his adopted mother. He couldn't take it anymore and took off. He's been roaming ever since. Never staying anywhere too long, always being careful not to get attached. Even he admits though the time he spent in Montreal with April and Sid the Kid was different but he has to get back Harkness and help out on his family's farm. He can't believe it when he arrives home only to find Sidney has stowed away in the back of his truck for the entire trip! When April arrives to pick her up with everything they own packed in her car he knows he can't just let her go.

You definitely want to grab this one and find out how their story goes. I highly recommend it.

What a great story. Don't get me wrong, I Love It, but had to break out the kleenex around Chapter 40. Scott and April - who wouldn't love and pull for them to be together, BUT Sidney stole my heart and I thought she totally made this story what it was.

ARC received from author for an honest review.

4.5 Stars - rounded to 5. Promise Me the Stars was the third and final book in the Standish Clan and my favorite. It can be read as a stand alone but I'd recommend reading the first two since Scott is introduced in those books and you get a feel for his character.

This book centers around Scott who was adopted by his aunt and uncle after the death of his parents. Scott has always had a hard time feeling like he fit even though his adopted family always treated him as if he were there son/sibling. He has made an art of moving around and actually feels panicked by the thought of staying in one place too long. Scott is heading home for a couple of months to help out his family but he can't help but think of the woman he's leaving behind. He truly cares about April but he knows that the life he leads isn't one where he can make a commitment. April's daughter stows away in the back of Scott's truck and it isn't until he makes it home that he finds her. April ends up being fired and makes her way to Scott's family farm to get her daughter.

In this book you really go to know the entire town and what an amazing little community it was. I'm a city girl but the descriptions made me want to pick and move there to be surrounded by the people living there and the great community events. We got to see quite a bit of Scott's siblings and their significant others along with Uncle Arden. The relationship between Scott and April was sweet and realistic. April's daughter Sydney was also a great character and added to the storyline.

Although it was very obvious how the story was going to play out I enjoyed getting to the resolution and spending time in Harkness. If you are looking for a small town romance with a bit of heat and outstanding characters then I recommend Promise me the Stars.

This book was provided by the author in return for a fair review.

Despite its longer page count, PROMISE ME THE STARS had a more unfinished feel than its two predecessors. In a departure from previous books, this novel had only one brief (and disappointing) explicit love scene; everything else was fade-to-black. One of the main characters, a 10-year-old child, often exhibited adult characteristics, which I found jarring. Jarring, too, were the numerous editing mistakes. That said, this was still a satisfying end to the trilogy of love stories set in Harkness, New Brunswick, the idealized little town where everyone from 8 to 80 finds a soulmate and no-gooders get what they deserve. Who doesn't love that?

Norah Wilson’s Promise Me the Stars is a moving, character driven romance that explores the ache of distance and the quiet strength it takes to come home again. In Scott Standish, Wilson crafts a hero shaped by guilt and wanderlust a man who has spent years running from the pain of his past, only to find healing in the unlikeliest of places. April Morgan, his counterpart, is a single mother whose love for her daughter is fierce but whose faith in second chances is fragile. Together, they form the emotional center of a story that’s as much about forgiveness as it is about love.

Wilson’s prose glows with warmth and sincerity. The small town setting of Harkness feels like a living character rich with community, compassion, and the promise of renewal. As Scott and April navigate their growing connection amid uncertainty and circumstance, Wilson never rushes their romance. Instead, she lets it breathe, allowing each moment of vulnerability to deepen the emotional stakes.

At its heart, Promise Me the Stars is a story about belonging about the families we build, the wounds we carry, and the quiet hope that love can make us whole again. It’s a deeply satisfying read that lingers long after the final page, a testament to the power of love that heals and endures.

This is a great finish to the Standish family series.

Be sure to grab a box of tissues before you start this one. You’re gonna need them. This one will tug the heartstrings, really get ya just when you thought it would all turn out fine.

“Promise Me the Stars” picks up late October with Scott driving Titus’ truck to Harkness, where he grew up on his aunt and uncle’s farm after his parents died. Indicative of his development and mental state, he refers to his cousin Titus as brother, a BIG step forward from the first Standish novel, but still calls Arden his uncle.

He arrives home to find out the kid who dogged his every step back at his previous job in Montreal hid overnight in the back of the truck in a sleeping bag. Then, when they get her warm and try to make her talk to her mom, Sidney sneaks out again. So, he has to get Axl, his elderly dog to watch her while he calls her mom.

Listening to Scott’s convo with her mom, Sid the Kid decides “she’d do it all over again for this chance. There was no better place to wish on the stars than Harkness, New Brunswick. That’s what Scott had told her, and Scott never lied, even when the truth sucked.”

Meanwhile, April has missed work upon realizing her daughter is missing, and the opportunity to lure in a big fish with her cooking skills. She also manages to get fired. Not only did she mess up at her job, but they learn her daughter has “borrowed” the business owners’ credit card to help save a dog that would have had to be put down if funds weren’t raised for its care.

So, not only is April without a job, they’re without a place to stay as their small digs were part of the arrangements when working for the spa.

With no where left to turn, she calls her misogynistic brother to beg for a place to stay for a month or so until she can find a job and other arrangements. Then, she uses part of the funds she has left to pay off the credit card purchase, loads up all of their belongings into her car and heads toward Harkness to pick up her daughter.

Realizing the situation and determined April and Sid shouldn’t ever have to deal with April’s brother, Scott convinces his family to offer April a place to stay and a temporary job through Christmas, doing cooking and domestic work. The funds, which she doesn’t know about, are the salary he would be receiving for taking care of the property. He convinces her it’s not charity, that she’d really be helping them to stay, leaving out the part about where the salary is coming from.

While there, Sid decides to pretend, even though she claims to know the reality, what if they stayed longer. And, April plays a similar game too, convincing herself to enjoy being with Scott as much as possible while they’re in Harkness, then she’ll say goodbye and leave, no problem.

Too bad April and Sid fit in so well in Harness and on the Standish spread. Jace, fiance of Scott’s sister Ember, gives her business advice. she even is offers a space in the mall for a booth at the weekly market so she can sell earn money selling the food she loves to cook.

Scott further delays a project in January, seeing an opportunity for April to further build a business in Harkness if he stays a few months. He knows she’ll leave if he does, on to that other “job” she’s got waiting.

Then, April is contacted by a representative of the big fish who apparently sampled her food at the spa and possibly from Harkness market. She wants April to come work for her, and sweetens the pill by offering to pay Sid’s tuition to a private school.

Secrets are revealed. Scott and April make rash decisions, and decide some sacrifices are in order too. It’s all on the line when a perilous situation develops the night before April and Sid are scheduled to leave.

Scott has to deal with his past and decide if he’s willing to move forward and open up or continue his rambling lifestyle.

April, factoring in Side still, has to decide what’s really most important to her and put aside her harrowing childhood and being left young and alone by Sid’s dad as soon as he found out she’d been conceived.

And finally, the kids get a clue about Arden and Faye! You get more of Faye as she provides enrichment activities for Sidney and her new BFF after school. Arden continues to be the wonderful patient man every parent dreams their daughter will marry one day.

My Review:
Scott is not a relationship guy. He knows it. April knows it. He won't ever be that guy, so it's not fair for him to get involved with April...and it's certainly not fair for her ten year old daughter Sid. The thing is, Scott loves his home. The home that he can't manage to stay at, but he shows his love by sharing his stories about it to Sid. She believes every word especially when it comes to the magic of wishes. This is a young girl who needs the magic of wishes to be real.

But for a couple of months Scott has to stay home to help out. That just happens to coincide with April needing help too, and Scott can't ignore a damsel in need. But it's temporary, and everyone is very clear on that...Sid, April, and Scott. No one can get settled into this situation. It's not going to last. (You can see how this is going to go, right?)

This book is about two people that are afraid to commit and one little girl who needs the stability of commitment more than anything. Over this series, I've fallen in love with the Standish clan. April and Sid add so much to this little family. Arden, the family patriarch, talks about the life Sid adds to the farm and I have to agree. That sweet little girl made this book. She was fabulous and I loved how strong her belief was. She just knew that if she wished hard enough that it would all work out.

At the same time, my heart broke for Scott. He's so messed up by all that he lost when he was a kid. There were moments when I just wanted to mourn for him...and I did shed a few tears over his realizations at the end. That scene between him and his Uncle Arden...PERFECTION!

April has her scars, too, but nothing ever wavers with her...her devotion to making sure her daughter knows she is loved and trying to do what's best for Sid. She hasn't had an easy time of it, but I loved that she's a chef and the whole April Dawn's story line and how it turned out to be such amazing quality time for the mother/daughter duo.

This whole series has been great. Norah Wilson is known for her amazing romantic suspense, but I'm here to tell you that her contemporary romance is just as good. Every single one of these three stories took on a completely different feel, but they were all amazingly good. I've fallen in love with this family and highly recommend the Standish Clan be added to your TBR.

Promise me the Stars picks up after book number 2, Ember’s Flame. Normally, I kind of give a lay of the land, so to speak, about the book and its premise, but the blurb does that perfectly. I’m just going to tell you why you should read this book. IT. WAS. AWESOME. The characters are well written and well developed. With the previous two books, we already knew that Harkness was a place that we’d all want to grow up and we already knew the supportive nature of most of its residents. We also knew that the Standish clan, each and every one of them, had a heart the size of the moon. Enter Scott Standish. Having lost his birth parents, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle. He was truly a member of the family: a beloved son and brother. He tried to calm his restless spirit, but no matter how hard he tried, he just could not stay put.

April Morgan is a strong, hard-working and very independent single mother who has struggled in life, but has always made things work for herself and Sidney, aka, Sid. Both of these characters will absolutely steal your heart. Sid is a typical 10 year old in a lot of ways, but is wise beyond her years in a lot of other ways. She’s bound and determined to get her mom to see reason and stay in Harkness.

With all of that said, what will take your breath away, and leave lots of tears in your eyes, is watching Scott realize just why he’s always been so restless. When the realization hits him, he truly knows peace and contentment for the first time since his birth parents died in that horrible accident. As he lays everything on the table with April, you can feel her hope and their absolute devotion to each other, to their family, and most of all, to the fabulous Sid the Kid. I really liked the first two books in this series, but this was by far my favorite. This is one of the sweetest and most endearing things I’ve read in a long time. So, grab your tissues and get to reading! Well done, Norah Wilson!! Very, very well done!!!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you have been following this series, you will know that this is book 3 and the third one I have read. I was so happy to read about Scott Standish, the third sibling in this family. His story takes place after Titus and Ember (his siblings) but very closely thereafter. Get ready for a wild ride because this story starts out with a major heart string pull! I won’t tell you much about the storyline – you need to read this and books 1 & 2, folks as the stories are amazing – but Scott’s character was very dear to me. He has much to work thru, in his back story, and he will make you want to just give him a hug. Seriously. But as always happens, he can be SUCH a boy sometimes, but in a way it will make you smile. His heroine is April Dawn Morgan (her middle name, Dawn, will play into the story) and she has a ten-year-old daughter, Sydney, aka Sid the Kid. (Please don’t call her a “child”; she’s a “kid”. She says there is a difference.) Sid just cracks me up. All three of these characters have much to work thru, not just Scott, but of course they eventually learn that they are stronger together. And if you ask Sid, she would have told them right at the start that they work better together! Loved the Standish family, et al, and this is a wonderful story. There were some crack-me-up moments (as you read the near-end of the story, you will laugh when Scott wears some sweats. Hey, you were warned!) I truly enjoyed this book, and the series, and would love to attend a party or two with the folks in this town. I highly recommend.

"I didn't know if Norah Wilson could top herself after writing the first two books in the "Standish Clan" series, but this third book is amazing! If you have not read this series you are missing out on three great books. This book, "Promise Me the Stars" manages to evoke all the emotions possible as you read the book. There is humor, sadness, and joy as you read the story of Scott Standish and the woman he is in love with (but he doesn't quite know that, yet), April Morgan and her precocious daughter Sidney. "Sid the Kid" is so much fun and yet heart breaking as she continues to wish for a permanent home at the Standish ranch. The love and communication between Sidney and her mother is heartwarming. I couldn't wait to read the book, yet didn't want it to end. The characters are so believable and become like friends as you read through the books. If you like books that have continuing characters, then you will really enjoy this series. I imagine the books could be read as standalone stories, but I think you will enjoy them more if you start with book #1. If you like a great read, with great characters and a story that will keep your attention to the end, then these books are for you."

Scott Standish is a lost and restless soul who never stays in one place too long, and rarely visits home because the family farm brings back bad memories that he is desperate to avoid. When circumstances beyond his control bring him back to run the farm during the busy fall season, he's forced to stay and deal with fears of commitment. With the healing love of his family, his house guest and her ten year old daughter, Scott prays he has the moral strength to fight his demons and be the kind of man his Uncle is. This book is a beautifully written, deeply emotional journey of love and forgiveness that deeply touched my heart. I also learned a lot about organic farming, running a home-based culinary catering business, important life saving search and rescue techniques, the charm of small town living, and the comfort of family traditions that made me appreciate the traditions in my own family. I highly recommend Norah Wilson's writing, and all three books in this heartfelt romantic series. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

This is the last book in this series. It is slow at times, but that helps with the build up of the chemistry between Scott Standish and April Morgan. April is a single mother to her daughter Sidney. She can’t take the chance on both of them getting too close to Scott. He is a wanderer who doesn’t settle in one place very long, and it seems he’s the only man who can break their hearts. While the adults were fighting their attraction, Sidney had other ideas when she stowed away in the back of Scott’s truck.

Ever since his mother’s death, Scott has had a hard time staying in one place for long. Never feeling like he belonged any where. As the story progressed, I began to root for April and Sydney because I believed they could change his mind and make him believe that he belonged. There were parts in this story that made me smile. I loved the ending and found it to be sweet and a nice wrap up for me.

This was truly my most favorite book of the series. I have been wondering about Scott and why he truly felt a bit disconnected from his family even though they tried so hard to make him feel like a true son and sibling. It is said that life comes in circles and Scott truly got his. I loved Sid and how she feels just like every little girl, to just want a complete family of her own and to have what is best for her mother. I also think Arden is one of my most favorite characters. He is a true gentle, yet wise father, and even though he was a secondary character, his wisdom, emotion, and presence is felt in all three books. It was truly powerful in the end when Scott truly “got it.” I loved the way this series and all of the characters find their HEA even through life’s challenges. I also loved the town of Harkness; it makes me wish for small town living. Great job Norah, I truly enjoyed this book.

One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL books I have EVER read!! Oh WOW, I cannot begin to say enough wonderful things about this book! This whole series is AMAZING and each book is so incredibly wonderful, I loved them all. I absolutely adored this story of April and Scott and Sid is the cutest kid. The chemistry jumps off the page and I just love this entire family. And the ending! Most beautiful, heart warming, tear jerking, happy, wonderful, amazing ending...LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I also love that this book had some heat, lots of romance, a little naughtiness, a bunch of sweetness, and was such a feel good story. I received an ARC copy of this book for my review and I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH WONDERFUL about this book. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it for a wonderful read...but be prepared to not want to put it down! Happy reading!

Well Norah, you saved the best for last. Scott and April's story was so good. I laughed, I cried, I giggled and in the end I had a great big smile. Sidney, (Sid the Kid) stole the story. Bless her heart! Wishing on the stars and the first snow for a dream come true. Scott was raised by his Uncle Arden after his parents died and he just always felt a little on the outside. He just couldn't put down roots and found himself wandering from job to job. April had a child out of wedlock and her very strict parents basically abandoned her. When Sid stows away in Scott's truck when he returns home, April follows her to Harkness. I want to live there.

GREAT BOOK! This book is my favorite in the series. The chemistry between Scott and April is undeniable. Sid is just hilarious, as kids that age tend to be. But the best is when Arden and Faye play 'Scrabble' every evening. April catches on to the 'Scrabble' right away and I love how April, Ocean, Ember and Sid keep it from Scott, Titus and Jace to see how long it takes them to catch on ... I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes. I recommend the whole series ... with this last book being exceptional! And, of course, if you read books 1 & 2 first, the story is so much easier to follow because all the characters from the thise books are in this book. I was sad to have this series end!

I received this book/arc for a honest review. Please keep the tissues handy. I love Scott and April's story and little Lady Bug. He can't settle down and she needs someone stable in her and her daughter's life. I am glad they have their HEA. You don't want to miss this book. If you haven't read the first 2 you don't need to but it would be good to understand the background.
