Acceptable Behavior

Rate this book
Tattoos don’t define a person’s character, or make him sexy. But, if you ask Sam Madison, they sure don’t hurt.

Dr. Travis Nelson has a passion for ink but keeps his many tattoos covered by long sleeves and trousers. He’s aware that as a pediatrician he’ll be judged not only by the other physicians in his practice, but also by the parents of his young patients.

When Sam Madison takes his young nephew, Levi, to be seen for an ear infection, he’s immediately attracted to Travis and the feeling is mutual. But Sam’s sister Melanie is going through a rough time and caring for Levi, and covering her obligations, keeps Sam occupied. He feels like he’s in no position to start a relationship.

Travis sees things differently, though he’s unable to truly understand the deep bond and connection Sam shares with his twin. As Melanie’s life goes from bad to worse, Sam is forced to make difficult decisions. Is protecting Levi enough of a reason for the two men to stay together, or will fighting for the child ultimately tear them apart?

I had a lot of issues with this book. This is really a 1.5 stars rounded up. It was technically written fine and some of the things that were big issues for me may not be a problem for everyone. I'm going to break it down in to what I liked and what I didn't so you can judge for yourself.

Liked:

1. The overall plot line was good.

2. The kid in the story was portrayed well. He wasn't an extreme of brattiness or of precociousness. He's was a part of the story but didn't over take it.

3. Great cover.

Disliked:

1. The author has a very descriptive writing style. Very heavy on adjectives. Very pretty, ugly, tiny, big, little, sexy, happy, sad, sad, sad (for me) adjectives.

2. I didn't like either MC or their relationship dynamics. Travis literally tells Sam what to do and says if Sam doesn't like it that's too bad because he's going to do it anyways. Period. And Sam does what he's told. Sam throws fits when he gets angry and says mean things and stomps away like a child. More than once. At one point he gets angry and slaps Travis in the face. Travis slaps him back. Because domestic violence is??? Romantic??? Yeah that's not going to work for me.

3. The dirty talk was not good for me. Not good at all. I'm generally a big fan of dirty talk but you know when it crosses that line from hot to "Eeww this is awkward"? Well this crossed the line. I know this is a matter of personal tastes so here are some examples:

"Oh, but this will make you happy, too. Eight inches, deep inside your tiny channel. I'm gonna fill you up, stud."

"Do it," Sam encouraged. "I want that beast inside me. Now."

"I'm going to ride you, so hard. I'll be on you like a cowboy on a bucking bronco."

"Come on, big boy. Spill your seed for me. I'm ready when you are."

4. The sex scenes in general were so not my thing I just started skipping them completely. Here's an example of the kind of things I do not like:

"His seed erupted into Sam's channel and it felt so good, he wished he could crawl in there after it." 0_0

5. The MC's were very....(I'm not sure which adjective would fit best) in their relationship imo. Insta love, lot's of lovey, dovey talk. Things like:

"But I'll see you tonight in my dreams."

"Because I can see right through those clear blue eyes and into your soul."

"Go right ahead and fall, handsome. I'll be here to catch you, any time and every time."

That kind of thing doesn't work for me.

6. There is the big drama at the end that came from nowhere, complete with stereotypical bigoted Christian's. I know they exist. Really I do. (I have to look no farther than certain family member's Facebook posts to be reminded of that) In this case it just felt like it was a case of throwing in everything but the kitchen sink. There was already way too much going on in the drama department. We didn't need more. It all came down feeling very unrealistic too. The judge in the case was a hot, unprofessional, ridiculous mess (see what I'm doing with the adjectives?).

7. Maybe this next one really tweaked me because I was already over the whole book but this passage sent me into a ragey rant to my bestie. This is from a discussion about someone who is pregnant:

"We don't know anything about the father, other than he was a drug-using scumbag. Do we even know what color he is?"

*slowly shaking my head back and forth*

Not cool man. Not....cool. I have a big problem with books that throw out some huge issue (like say a racist comment) and then address it in like two more sentences (literally) and then it's wrapped up. I don't think it's at all necessary and honestly this whole passage offended me. I get the idea the author was trying to convey (things to think about when adopting) but the execution here really didn't work for me. Either address this in detailed, thoughtful discussion or don't bring it up at all.

This was a hard review to write because I really disliked this book. I probably would have dnf'd it except I was reading it for a review. I know though that the majority of the things were personal taste issue which is why I included examples. That way you can judge for yourself.

Sam Madison moves in with his twin sister, Melanie, after her boyfriend and baby daddy is sent away to prison so he can help take care of his nephew Levi. Melanie has some drug issues and she's not the best mom. Sam is doing his best to be there for both Mel and Levi.

When Levi gets an ear infection Sam takes him to a new pediatrician and is immediately attracted to Dr. Travis Nelson. However, with all he has on his plate, Sam views Travis more as a look but don't touch kind of guy, but when Sam keeps running into Travis he can't continue to deny his feelings.

I loved that Travis is all buttoned up long sleeve shirts on the outside, but he's totally covered with tats over most of his body underneath.

Travis loves three things: being a Pediatrician, riding his bike, and getting tattoos. However, Sam and Levi quickly join the ranks of the things Travis loves. Travis is intense in everything he does, and being in a relationship is no different.

I liked the relationship arc in the story, even if I felt like Travis was a bit to heavy-handed and intense at times. I was happy that Sam stood his ground on the important issues and didn't allow Travis to just steamroll him.

I liked that even though Levi plays a big part in the story, it wasn't all-kid-all-the-time but I'll admit I eye-rolled a lot whenever Melanie was on page, and couldn't wait for it to get back to the guys.

This short erotic romance is filled with hot smexy times, a touch of angst, and a ton of dirty talk. If you like dirty talk - look no further, because it is hot and heavy in this one!

A Joyfully Jay review.

So. Okay. There is very little about this book that recommends itself, and I found myself struggling very hard to get through it. There were times I was ready to put it down and walk away completely, and the only reason I didn’t was because it was a review book. In the end, there wasn’t much to redeem it. And I’ll do my best to tell you why I found it unappealing.

The first, and most glaring, problem I encountered was the characters. While there were moments of real emotion from them, for the most part, Travis and Sam felt like one dimensional caricatures. They had no depth. They were flat and unengaging. I didn’t feel a connection to them at all, and I certainly didn’t feel the connection between them. I felt like I was reading a recounting of actions, not as if I was in there in the moment with them. These guys were inconsistent and contrary, and their reactions were not believable for who they were supposed to be. Well, who the author was telling us they were supposed to be. Because for the most part, we weren’t shown their feelings, actions, and emotions.

'Acceptable Behavior' is the first full-length novel I have read by Jenna Byrnes. My only other experience with this author was a short story in an anthology and I really enjoyed her writing. I'm woman enough to admit that tattoos are a huge turn-on even if they're hidden under clothing.... especially if they're hidden. *grins* The blurb for this book caught me because I'm a sucker for a tattooed guy and a kid who needs some help from his uncle. Yeah, the description pretty much had me right from the gate.

I liked and admired Sam straight from the beginning. Having siblings myself, I know it's a whole lot easier to say "I'm done, deal with your mess yourself" and walk away, than it is to try to help, particularly when there's a child involved. Levi is six and has had a pretty tough life with a dad who is in prison and a mom who still runs with the same crowd, getting high before her job as a waitress in a bar at night. Sam moved into their run-down apartment to try to help Melanie get her life back together and to help care for Levi. He didn't expect Travis and he certainly doesn't have time for a relationship.

Travis is an only child so even though he understands, in his mind, the difficulties Sam is facing with Melanie, he has no frame of reference to understand emotionally. He's an excellent pediatrician, loves his job, and falls fairly quickly for Sam. In fact, that was one of the things that didn't sit right with me was how quickly Sam and Travis advanced in their relationship. You know, the one Sam said he didn't want and didn't have time for?

Overall this was a good, sexy, sweet story about two men beating the odds and doing what was right. However, there were more than a few things that niggled at me and wouldn't let me be. First was how quickly Sam and Travis's relationship moved forward when they didn't really know each other very well and, in fact, I never got a good feel for either character which could totally be my fault. The second was how predictable the storyline became in terms of Sam, Melanie, and Levi. And how quickly Travis jumped on that bandwagon. The whole scenario didn't work well for me but, again, this is only my opinion and someone else will probably view it differently.

If you enjoy a story about two men making it work under seemingly tough odds then this might just work for you. I definitely loved the relationship between Travis, Sam, and Levi. I think every child should have that kind of love. All in all this is a sweet romance with some drama and a happy ever after.

This story left me with mixed emotions. Parts of it belonged to a gentle, feel-good family romance. In other places, the central relationship made me really uncomfortable. I find physical violence between romantic partners disturbing and Sam and Travis never seemed to properly deal with some of the power and control issues between them. Even a formal power-exchange relationship involves careful communication and I kept waiting for Travis and Sam to talk through some of their problems instead of either ignoring them or solving them with sex.

Individually, I enjoyed both men initially, but over the course of the book, Sam starts to come across as weak and malleable while Travis seems to enjoy manipulating him and making unilateral decisions. When they work well, the men are hot and very sweet. When they aren’t working well, they are a difficult couple to read.

I enjoyed the Levi and Mel storyline, but I thought the court case at the end was an awkward tag-on. I can’t imagine that judges in the American court system can offer biased, moralising rants in a courtroom instead of an impartial verdict. Nothing in the court scene rang true and I was glad to be offered a final closing scene after the trial.

Overall, there were some really sweet moments in this story that were sometimes overshadowed by the problems in Sam and Travis’ relationship.

Sam Madison is having a rough life. He moved in with his sister to help care for his nephew, Levi. Melanie isn't what you'd call an involved mother, she is on drugs and depressed over Levi's father going to prison, leaving Sam to do all the work. Sam is just plain tired. He hasn't been in a relationship in awhile but doesn't even have the energy to care. That is until he meets Levi's pediatrician.

Travis Nelson is a pediatrician. When he walks into the room with his next patient, he's instantly interested in Sam, but not knowing the situation, whether Sam's gay or straight, he moves the sexy man to his fantasies. When fate puts the two men together again Travis has to find out one way or another what the situation is. Can Travis give Sam the help he knows he needs? Will Sam admit the sexy doctor is just what he needs in his life?

I fell in love with this story. It was a quick romantic feel good read. At times Travis was a bit overbearing but it was what Sam needed. He needed someone to care for him. The monologue in the court room was perfect and brought me to tears.

Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I have a thing for books with tattooed characters. A character with full body tattoos, that he keeps hidden away to appear "respectable" during the day? YES PLEASE!

Unfortunately, the ridiculously hot body art of Dr. Travis Nelson was not enough to get me to finish this book.

I really like the plot, as much of it as I got through, but I felt like the writing was inconsistent and stuttering. But what made me stop reading was Travis and Sam's relationship. Especially the sex.

This is probably a style preference, to be honest. I don't know that other people would struggle with reading the book as much as I did. But I just kept rolling my eyes at the word choice, and the completely un-sexy language.
“Right this way, stud. I think a double sixty-nine would be the perfect way to get the ball rolling, so to speak. I want to eat you up, too.”

I'm not sure what a "double sixty-nine" is, but it sounds complicated.
“Uh-uh,” Travis replied, not wanting to release the savory shaft.

Also, don't call your sex partner "buddy". And nibbling on something that's oozing? Um...

So yeah, just not for me.

M/M Romance
Triggers: Drug abuse, rape, homophobia
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

The two main characters, Travis and Sam were great together. I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop and change - especially when it included Levi. Kids are resilient, but there does come a point where their resilience can be tested and I thought that Byrnes did a great job at coming close to that line, but not crossing it.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Travis and Sam in the beginning. They were honest, loving, steamy together and caring. But, somewhere towards the middle of the story, their relationship began to develop in to one of take, dictate and manipulate. I thought that Byrnes could have created a different feeling in the story and not gone towards these actions.

The sister, Mel, I wanted to throttle. While I can understand the family connection - that desire to try to help those who might need it, Sam became a door mat and I hated that. He was unable to be the brother and instead became the whipping boy (and not the fun kind).

Poor Levi was stuck in the middle of an adult, hot mess and just wanted to be loved and given attention.

So, while I did enjoy this story, it was a kind of train wreck in the middle.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is a really interesting read - it sometimes pushes uncomfortable buttons, but then also fits with the characters that are behaving in that way. It also grounds them as people who are fallible, who do have selfish interests at play, and who want to get what they want. It is a mixture of sweet and tense, a slow paced life but at the same time, feelings develop quickly. As the first in a series, it gives us a big picture of the place and the people, and lets us guess who will be featured in future stories.

I enjoyed the dynamic that has to come into play when a child is in the story - and it is effective, although I felt sorry for Sam when Travis was particularly blunt! The passion between the two guys is intense, and equal, which worked well give all the other inequalities. This is a book which makes you think as well as sigh, and smile. It has some lovely touches of humour, and family.

I will definitely be looking out for book 2 with interest. Thank you Ms Byrnes.

Dr. Travis Nelson is a pediatrician who loves ink and has it all over his body, expect where you can see it. He knows he will be judged if any of his ink shows. When Sam brings his nephew in to see him due to a ear infection Travis feels a instant attraction to Sam.

Now I have to say I did really like the first half of this book but for some reason after the first half it kind of went down hill for me and I ended up not really liking Travis's character or these two men together.

Travis was just so rude and bossy sometimes and the way Sam and Travis would bicker honestly just drove me nuts. Other than that I did like this story and the authors pretense of this story just was not a huge fan of these two men together. So I am sad to say this book was just not for me....

I really enjoyed this book; it was a great start to a new series. I will admit at times I wanted to beat the tar out of Sam because of his loyalty to his twin Melanie, I mean I understand the twin bond but she was a hot mess! I did like the fact that Levi wasn’t in every scene in the book, I think there was a good balance between Sam and Travis and then Levi. I love how fierce Travis was about Sam and Levi not going back to the roach infested apartment, which gave an element of realness to me for some reason. There was a little angst and lots of love, just like I like it.

Wow, just wow. It’s no surprise why I like Jenna Byrnes, this book was absolutely amazing. I felt the connection to Sam and Travis immediately and it just kept going from there. This author writing just makes the whole story just flow together. There were definitely some issues with the book and that was to shift of personalities in Travis and Sam. I mean Travis all of a sudden becomes a total prick and Sam becomes wimpy. I was glad that in the end they seem to work out their differences and make a go of it together.

Sam a freelance writer and Travis a doctor.
I liked the story. 3.5 stars.
Mel Sam's sister was a pain in the butt at times and I would have loved to smack her. She comes around after getting rehab and help and become an asset. You just really have to get passed her character to get to the great story of Sam Travis and little Levi who was adorable (Sam's Nephew Mel's son).

Sam Madison has put his life on hold to help with his six year old nephew, Levi. His twin sister, Melanie, has some issues, and it’s always been hard for Sam to deal with her. She’s turned to drugs, so he tries not to upset her for fear she will go over the edge.

Doctor Travis Nelson, pediatrician, loves his job, and has a pretty good life. After a relationship that didn’t work out, he’s made sure that he would never be quick to fall for someone again. When Travis first meets Sam, he has some doubts about the man—but he still finds himself thinking about Sam. Then, when they meet again, he sees Sam in a whole new light, and Travis not only wants to be involved with Sam, but he wants Levi to be part of their friendship too. As their relationship grows, the fact that Travis wants to give Sam everything he needs, but doesn’t always understand Sam’s relationship with his twin sister, causes problems for them.

The one thing I was really hoping for as I read Acceptable Behavior was for Melanie to make smarter choices. For all that Sam did for her, to the point he’d taken over her parental duties, she is really a bitch to him. If it hadn’t been for Sam and Travis, she would have lost Levi. In spite of that, though, I liked the storyline. Jenna Byrnes knows how to spin a family drama into an easy read, with humor and love and solid characters.

Independent Reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book.

A delightful tale, it really was!

Dr Travis hides his tattoos, because as a pediatrician he knows its not the best image. He also knows not to date the parents of his patients. But Sam isn't a parent, he is uncle to Levi, twin brother to Levi's mum, Melanie. Travis knows deep down Sam loves him, and comes up with a sloution to all their problems.

Like I said, a really delightful tale. Thats the first word that popped into my head and the lasting feeling I have since finishing.

You get Travis' reaction to Sam, and vice versa. You get Melanie's spiral downwards and her fight to get back up again. And we get the charming little man who binds them all together in Levi.

We hear from both Sam and Travis, and you know how much I prefer multi POV books.

It was a nice easy read, too long for a hang over cure though. Nothing too complicated and it has a really cute little epilogue.

I'd quite happily read anything by Jenna Byrnes, especially ones that follow this. Its billed as book one in the series and I cannot see who might be next in this book.

This book caught me off guard with how much I enjoyed it, even though it was so short. The attraction between Sam and Travis was just amazing and off the charts. I loved watching as they tried to figure out their relationship, and how it would work out between the two of them.

The only thing that I did have an issue with was how controlling Travis was. It was quite a bit uncomfortable at times because he would completely take over everything about Sam and Levi’s lives.

But, even taking that into consideration, I still enjoyed the story line and everything that was going on in the story. Travis’s character was very touch and go for me personally. I liked him, but didn’t love him. However Sam’s character was one that I was able to connect with completely.

I do want to give the author complete props for the way they portrayed the drug issues with Melanie and how it affected everyone around her.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and I will be sure to look for more from this author in the future.

I really liked this books. It was fun to see a character who is an upstanding man with a great job, yet loves his ink (and has lots and lots of it). There was chemistry and fun between Travis and Sam.

Although I didn't care for the touch of insta love that I got with their relationship. I also didn't care for how rapid some things changed and how easily others were taken care of. Parts of it came across as a joke more than serious (i.e. court case) and that was a bit of a disappointment.

However, I found the book to be the normal great writing of Jenna Byrnes and still loved all the characters and how they were all so distinctly different from each other, but all made it work some how.
