Bowdrie Follows a Cold Trail

When Texas Ranger Chick Bowdrie rides into a long-abandoned ranch, he discovers the skeleton of its owner. All signs indicate that he was murdered years before, and that his wife and young daughter were taken away by force. Bowdrie vows to bring the killer to justice and to track down the whereabouts of the missing women. The cold trail leads to hot lead in the town of Gabel's Stop, where a hardcase rancher has been waiting sixteen years for the payoff of a lifetime.

About the author

Louis Dearborn L'Amour was an American novelist and short story writer. His books consisted primarily of Western novels, though he called his work "frontier stories". His most widely known Western fiction works include Last of the Breed, Hondo, Shalako, and the Sackett series. L'Amour also wrote historical fiction (The Walking Drum), science fiction (The Haunted Mesa), non-fiction (Frontier), and poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into films. His books remain popular and most have gone through multiple printings. At the time of his death, almost all of his 105 existing works (89 novels, 14 short-story collections, and two full-length works of nonfiction) were still in print, and he was "one of the world's most popular writers".

Listened to the dramatized audiobook on a road trip with my dad. This was mostly a nostalgia listen, and a fun little Western murder mystery! Definitely hit different with adult ears, catching the racial stereotypes of natives and some not so subtle sexism… the nostalgia is pulling A LOT of weight…

I have been writing the same reviews for all of these, because I’ve had the same feelings for all of these. This story however was the grossest, from a woman’s perspective!

"I heard you brought all the killers to justice except for four you had to shoot."
"Only three."

This is a paraphrase of a conversation Chick has with one of the other characters but sets the theme for the story. In the old west, man needed to be strong to hang on to what is his but he doesn't brag about it.

Chick discovers the body of a man who was murdered for his wife and daughter 16 years earlier. It is a cold case but of course, Chick solves it.

Bowdrie comes across a gorgeous valley with a lovely little abandoned homestead and a long dead corpse. Gathering evidence and clues left in the house he pieces together a sad story of lust, greed, and devastation and vows to do everything he can to get justice for the next generation. This is one of my favorite Bowdrie stories.

another Ranger Chick Bowdrie short story from the Master himself in this on Chick stumbles across a deserted cabin and finds the owner dead. Murdered. He promises the corpse to find who killed him and make things right and find out what happened to his family.
