표백

<표백>에서 작가는 모든 틀이 다 짜여 있는 세상에서 옴짝달싹 할 수밖에 없게 된 젊은 세대를 '표백 세대'라고 칭한다. 소설의 주인공들은 어떤 것을 보탤 수도 보탤 것도 없는 흰 그림인 '완전한 사회'에서 청년 세대들이 할 수 있는 일은 그 사회에 표백되어 가는 일밖에 없다고 생각한다. 자기의 위치에서 가장 성공했을 때 사회에 자신을 표출할 수 있는 유일한 길은 자살밖에 없다며, 와이두유리브닷컴 사이트에 자살 선언을 올리고 24시간 후에 자살한다.

현실세계에서 자신이 원하는 꿈이나 노력해서 무엇인가를 얻을 수 없다는 생각에 좌절하면서, 하루하루 살아가는 청년 세대들의 고달픈 일상과 정해진 채 다가올 미래와 표백되는 사회에 대한 진지한 고민들을 보여주면서 면밀하고 명확하게 우리 사회를 그려낸다.

This book was gifted to me (in french) and it was... definitely an interesting read. I'm not rating it as I'm not sure how to feel about it. This is my first time trying Korean/Asian literature ; I quickly understood that social context was very important to understand everything about this book and had to do my own research on the side. I would describe it as somewhere between psychological thriller and drama, with criticism of society being at the core of everything : while the events are purely fictional, the context isn't. I would say that while this is a criticism of Korean society that takes into account its national History and mentality, it is somewhat relatable even to a Western audience, and maybe even others too : a hopeless, desperate generation that doesn't know how to leave a mark on the world and has no choice but to fit in the molds that were already conceived for us.
Suicide is the other main theme of this book and some parts are heavy and graphic, so I also think it has to be said that anyone sensitive about this topic shouldn't read this book.
