I love the French language and anything French and anything about travel and that's why I picked this book up on vacation. I enjoyed Lauren Collins personal experiences in Geneva with her husband and she made some great observations about the difficulties of couples who come from different backgrounds and speak different languages. I didn't think that the way she continually shifted to the history of the French language and multitudes of information about languages worked for this book. Her research into languages was amazing and interesting to read - however, I found myself skimming and flipping pages when I saw what was coming, sometimes right after a sentence about her personal life. I think she could have written two books and separated the personal with the language information.
I'm originally from North Carolina and am very familiar with the Lauren's city of Wilmington where she grew up. This added interest and it was fun to see how her family and her husband's French family connected. I think the author is a good writer, but needs more organization of her material.
