Gary Szenderski in his book Szen Zone gives the reader strategies and insight into making more of your life and using your time positively. This book contains light-hearted and positive narrative on life and its possibilities with an overarching theme of change, how to manage it and recognise the power we have to become what we choose.

Chapter 1 – overcoming obstacles that are holding you back – in life, at work, with others.
Chapter 2 – tips for making changes, using your time better.
Chapter 3 – the past & letting go.
Chapter 4 – living in the present
Chapter 5 – creating the future
Chapter 6 – knowledge is power
Chapter 7 – taking chances
Chapter 8 – let go of expectations and free yourself

Each chapter has short stories that convey the topic, often in a light-hearted way, plus strategies relating to both your personal and work life.

A couple of my favourite suggestions were:
“Create positive change. First imagine the change then take steps towards it. Above all be in the moment and appreciate what is happening this very second.”

“Unplug, unwind and underachieve for awhile – take a mental vacation.”

This is not a book to be read cover to cover in one sitting but should be taken out and read a little at a time. Pick a story or topic that matches your mood or predicament at that time, read through the strategies and take action to make your life what you want it to be.

"Insight, wisdom, and positive thinking, a little something for everyone, motivating individuals to come back to this array of thoughtful stories again and again as a guide, if not motivation to live a more mindful life. Life is all about learning, adapting to change and having a willingness to evolve on many levels not merely from the physical but the spiritual as well. This book has so much to offer, helping individuals look at life from various vantage points. Gary Szenderski’s Szen Zone highlights his own personal journey in a such a way that beckons the reader to empathize and reevaluate their own position, reconditioning old ways of thinking in order to “reach a state of positive change.” A book that deserves more than just one read, but the teachings will serve as a reference, helping navigate the different stages of life. We hold the compass, Szen Zone is a map that can create the future we envision."

Szen Zone is a compilation of short stories to help us find peace in the present moment, accept change with a positive attitude, and have a more blissful demeanor in everyday life. Although the Szenippet, main point, at the end of each story is wise, it doesn't always match the story clearly. However, I do recommend this book to individuals who are looking for an introductory self-help guide to Buddhist concepts in contemporary business culture.

*The author provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

The Szen Zone is a collection of life lessons interwoven into short stories which lead the reader into the possibilities of change, and how making changes can open the doors to further growth. A self-help book in nature, it is written in a down to earth style that everyone can relate to.

The book is split into topics which then flow into each short story. At the end of each story, the author follows with his points to ponder. He then ends with a "Szenippit," a clever play on words with his last name. Each Szenippit is a quote that really hits home with the subject discussed.

For example, Chapter Four is called, "Living in the Present." One of my favorite quotes from the book is this:

"There is no perfect time, there is only this time, your best first chance. You know that you're as ready as you will ever become."
Each chapter and topic are geared at empowering us as individuals to create positive change in our lives. A detailed description of the five essential elements necessary to create positive changes is shared. They are, self-exploration; perspective; imagination; now and energy. The words create the acronym, S.P.I.N.E. which is a handy way to remember that it takes character to change and succeed in life.

It took me a couple of weeks to read the book because the subject matter really made me think about my own goals and ability to change. I weighed the possibilities and not only lived in the now, I also thought about what some of these positive changes could bring to me at this stage in my life.

It would be easy to read the book in its entirety, or split it into a topic at a time. I found myself highlighting and bookmarking many passages that spoke to me. This is the kind of book that I will refer to often. I liked the author's message of setting goals and allowing myself the freedom to make changes that will facilitate me reaching the completion of my goals.

Are you looking to make some positive changes in your life? Don't do it alone. Let the Szen Zone guide you down the path of self-discovery. Remember:

"Achievement is not only about reaching the goal; it's about setting the right goal to reach. We'll know we've set the right one when we can't wait to get there."

If you are looking for a lighthearted read full of positive messages which can help you make changes in your life, then you should check out this collection of short stories. Szenderski’s latest can be read in any order, even though it is divided into topics. Through various examples and personal stories, the author demonstrates that though change is not easy, it is possible.

The book contains “sixty-word szen stories,” as well as numerous great tips in sections labeled “szneippets” (a wonderful play on words with Szenderski’s name). The intent is to help the reader create balance and stay focused on life’s goals.

There were a number of quotes which stood out for me, including:

• “If you doubt your power to change the way you are, you dismiss the creator inside that can show you what you really can do when you set your mind to it.”
• “If you don’t know where to start, begin with how you want to end.”
• “Giving thanks is the best gift you can give.”
• “What’s impossible only becomes possible with faith.”
• “Regrets happen because of the past, and they only live in the present if we invite them.”

Overall, this is a quick read which can easily fit into busy daily schedules. The inspiring messages will give the reader daily clips of positivity. This book may cause them to ponder their own goals, particularly with the reminder that motivation is key to any change in life.

"Everything everyone enjoys enters; evolves - eventually engaging each entity entirely. Easy? Exactly"

To my mind, this sentence captures the genius of the book quite well. The surprising part of the mantras of the book was that they weren't just reflective, a lot of the advice was pretty hands-on: it gave out the vibes of a management handbook at times. That is a big positive of reading a self-help book: a pleasant surprise. There are stories, there are anecdotes, there are underlying lessons.

the creative quotient of the book is higher than any book in the genre I've read: it is almost like attending a master class. But then again, you have to provoke yourself into the right action.
I do feel like a lot of what it mentions cannot be taken singularly, meaning that sentences out of context could get misleading- so eat the entire cake and don't limit yourself to a piece.

My favorite Szenippet: In the world of the unknown, all possibilities exist.

This is a collection of short inspiring stories, similar to Chicken Soup for the Soul. I am still a bit confused if these are true stories but either way, they are heartfelt and feel good stories. I am experiencing a lot of changes in my life currently so these short stories were a positive light into some of the situations. I feel like I have to read this book slowly in order to really appreciate and absorb each story for the message it is sending.

An excellent and thought-provoking collection of essays and stories. I enjoyed this one in bite-sized portions, taking time to mull over each little gem. These positive stories are focused on change, on what is possible, when we open our mind to possibly doing or seeing things a little differently.

When I was contacted about reading this book I was pretty excited, to say the least. Reading other reviews and simply reading about the book itself had me checking the PO Box daily looking for this gem in the mail. I wasn't disappointed.

This was exactly what I was looking for. Something to read nightly, just before bed, that was uplifting and didn't consume a lot of my time. One, or sometimes two, short stories a night. I just loved it! And the Szenippets were my favorite parts!

Thank you, Book Publicity Services, for sending this gem of a book to me!

The Szen Zone by Gary Szenderski is positively the most enthralling read yet. The writing style will lure readers instantly into a world of reaching a postive state of change. With the way the world is today...everything is dark, sad, and depressing. This book is refreshing, positive, and thought provoking. The set-up of this book is easy to follow and to read by anyone. Szen Zone: Reaching a State of Positive Change by Gary Szenderski is a highly readable and empowering book that not only addresses living in "the now" but also in "the could be". Each topic is presented in a short story followed by points to think about and ending with a Szenippit, a very appropriate quote. You can read the book as a whole, or just a topic at a time, but I guarantee that you will be doing a lot of highlighting and bookmarking and coming back to the book time and again as you feel the need.

I cannot imagine that there is a person alive who could not benefit from reading this book!

Many thanks to NetGalley and CreateSpace for allowing me to read and review this wonderful book in exchange for an honest opinion.

Mindfulness, openness to personal growth, and Chicken Soup for the Soul combine in Szen Zone to fuel the reader towards living their best life. Presented in short essay style and chock full of anecdotal, approachable real-life stories, I was left feeling as though I had been marinating in positivity after my joyous read of this book. Subtle, yet powerful, the Szen Zone taught me a great deal about opening myself to positive change, without leaving me feel as though I’d been lectured to. This book is perfect for a one-sitting steep in positivity, or for daily nibbles, and I very much enjoyed this refreshing, upbeat collection of soul-expanding thoughts.

Gary Szenderski has compiled a series of short stories of anecdotes and advice to cultivate positivity in change and productivity.

The books main theme is change and covers topics in productivity, letting go of the past, embracing the future and risk taking.

I love how the book is broken down to bite-sized portions, made for easy reading - especially for the busy person who is constantly rushing from place to place, task to task. Each section leaves you some food for thought and puts potential situations in perspective.

What a fantastic book, especially as we enter a new year. The book is comprised of 60 "szen" stories, in addition to several great tips in sections labeled “szneippets”, which is a play on words with the author's name - clever! I think the goal of this book is to help the reader create balance and stay focused on goals. A must read! Full review available soon at www.StayingOnPace.com

Self help type books aren't normally my thing so I can't say that this was my favourite book or anything. I do think though, that if you're into this sort of thing, it's definitely a great book to keep on your nightstand and read a few passages before bed.
