When an American teenager disappears abroad, Clara Roberts, a by-the-book investigator on a secret mission, joins forces with Light Walker, an ex-SEAL turned lawless mercenary, to save her. The sparks they generate—and the trouble they stir up—threaten to set the jungle ablaze. Nothing is what it seems in this fast-paced romantic thriller. As attraction grows into love, looming danger turns into all-out war, and the whole region explodes around them. Clara and Walker must hold on to each other and race against time to survive.

Flash Fire by Dana Marton is a 2015 publication. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“What anger wants, it buys at the price of soul” - Heraclitus
DOD agent Clara Roberts is in Mexico working on an ‘off the books’ missing persons case and has been told to expect help from Light Walker, only to find the man is a mercenary with no loyalties to any one side, and that their agendas are in direct opposition. Light will do whatever it takes to scare Clara off so he can complete his personal mission. But, Clara doesn’t scare easy and the two end up in a hopeless standoff. Who will win the battle of wills? Will Clara find the missing teen, she is searching for? Will Light finally have his revenge against the drug cartels? Can they get out of the jungle with their lives and hearts in tact?
This story is one of the edgiest novels by Dana Marton I’ve read. It has all the elements that romantic suspense enthusiast, love- such as a hot ex-SEAL hero, a kick – butt heroine, a dangerous location, two emotional backstories, and plenty of sexual chemistry. But, this one is especially gritty, with some graphic depictions of drug lords, human trafficking, and the utter disrespect for human life.
While it’s obvious Light is carrying around a lot anger, that it controls him and has turned him into a hardened vigilante, running hard and fast and as far away as possible from his grief and pain, I had a feeling I would eventually come to like him, plus he had redemption written all over him.
Clara has my sympathy right away due to her fragile family life, and the very awkward position she finds herself in. I admired her tenacity and how her loyalty to family spurs her forward and in the process, she softens and captures Light’s heart.
Being a person that likes a little realism in my stories, even if the imagery or subject matter is a little uncomfortable, I was impressed by the risk the author took in writing such a dark hero, with a no holds barred picture of the conditions in Mexico, the jungle, the cold blooded criminals and their own brand of politics and backstabbing and double crosses.
For me the romance was pretty low key, although there is an underlying attraction between the characters from the start It’s a pretty slow burn, but eventually it catches fire, and becomes more emotional after the two come through a tense and bloody battle together and live to tell the tale. Sometimes, the romance has to take a backseat in a book that is as explosive and action packed as thin one, but the couple definitely has their moments.
Overall, I enjoyed this fast-paced story, filled with explosions, a little comic relief here and there, sharp dialogue, twist and turns, and an emotional, but a special love story to top it off.
This book came over my email as a RITA award winner so I thought I'd give it a try. It's got several of my favorite tropes: grumpy ex military mercenary and running through the jungle. It delivered in a very nice way. It was action packed, the plot made sense and flowed really well. The attraction between the two main characters was believable and pretty hot. The local of the story was well described and rich and full. There was jungle but there was also bits in towns with a mixture of people, good and bad and just trying to get along and keep their heads down in a cartel controlled area. The hero was pretty bad ass but he had solid motivation and good skills maybe only a little too good but I'm giving him a pass since he's an ex SEAL and he's the hero so of course I wouldn't want him to be lame. The heroine was pretty resourceful but wasn't TSTL and knew when she needed help and when she was in over her head.
Dana Martin gives us a dark and vengeful hero in this latest in the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit series.
I didnt quite know what to make of Light Walker when we first meet him. He is one angry dude out to avenge the death of his younger brother. He left the SEALs and is now a mercenary for hire who doesnt think twice about killing.
Clara Roberts typically found and retrieved US citizens and got them back home whether alive or dead. She's about to take a leave from her job to go and help her father through his chemo when instead he sends her on a mission into Mexico to find a missing young woman. Her father asks Walker to be her guide and muscle to help. The two embark on a harrowing trek through the Mexican jungle running from banditos and the deadly wildlife of the jungle.
Walker goes through quite the transformation through out the book. He's lived for so long looking for the man that killed his brother and killing any bad guys in the way he figured he didnt have a heart left. Clara surprisingly makes his dead heart start beating again and he has to decide what's more important – his need for revenge and not caring about anything or to come back to being a human being that cares about someone.
I saw this book tweeted out as a deal the other day, so I went to check it out. The excerpt hooked me. I bought it, and read it, and it’s good. But…
***Small Spoilers Ahead***
I didn’t like the hero too much. He was redeemed, but with his personality, I think it would be very VERY hard for him to accept a desk job. It really seems like it would be torture.
The heroine. Okay, I liked her to a point. She’s all no-nonsense and spreadsheets and intelligence and I liked her. But she had some dumb moments.
Clara is part of a small DOD branch that retrieves Americans who are missing abroad. She’s been in the field for about a year, but her job is mostly research and paperwork. She’s very black and white, either it fits in a column on a spreadsheet, or it doesn’t. Although her job requires her to go out in the field, it’s usually just dealing with other authorities who are just fine with her taking some of their workload.
So when her dad, a general, and the head of her department, gives her an off the books case down in drug cartel territory Mexico, I was kind of surprised that A) her dad asked her to do this knowing how dangerous it is, and B) didn’t have any other contacts who could do this. Oh and C) seriously, he sent his daughter?
Quick and dirty, the general is diagnosed with cancer again, and the prognosis isn’t looking good, so in a moment of weakness, he and his housekeeper’s niece get it on. She’s 17. She takes pictures. And then he asks his only child to go retrieve her since she’s gone missing? Seriously? And Clara is pissed as hell. Her contact is a man named Light Walker, who is supposed to meet her in Mexico and help her establish a connection with the locals and give her the lay of the land.
But Clara sticks out. She has pleats in her jeans for crying out loud! She literally ironed pleats into her jeans. And she 100% believes that she’s going to pass for undercover in her jeans and baseball hat. It’s funny at first, but when I realized she genuinely thinks she can handle herself undercover I was like, okay she’ll see quickly how wrong she is. But it took like three quarters of the book for her to realize she was in over her head. She really thought she could deal with the DEA and the local police and they’d help, even after he proved that she couldn’t. That was probably my biggest problem with the book.
Walker is a former SEAL who is on a vengeance mission to find who killed his brother and to make him/them pay. He’s setting something big up to pit the cartels against each other, and it’s going to blow the towns to hell. So when this favor he owes the general comes up, it’s at the worst possible time. And his first order of business is to scare this American DOD investigator back to the States.
Seeing Clara in the bar, he is floored. They sent a woman. A woman who can’t blend in. A woman who is already in trouble with a cartel boss. So Walker goes in and saves her, and kills the boss. It’s a bold move, but he has reasons. And he isn’t going to explain those reasons to Clara. He lets her think he’s an ass. He wants her to leave (this is still only like chapter 3 by the way).
Clara and Walker flee through the jungle. She continues to impress him, and he continues to keep her alive. Walker succeeds in proving to her that the girl she’s searching for is more than likely dead already. Clara refuses to return to the States without at least a body. Until all the plans Walker has set in motion finally come to a head.
I won’t spoil the rest of the action, but this book would make an amazing action movie! Really, it would! But as far as a romance novel, I wasn’t loving it. It’s hard when you don’t really like the characters that much. I think Walker was…buried deep inside his hard-ass persona, but I didn’t warm up to him until the end. And the ending felt…off. like this seriously action-packed story suddenly was trying to be funny. It was awkward and weird. In fact there’s like a half a paragraph that made me believe the general didn’t actually sleep with the girl-it was a set up and she roofied him. This felt like it needed more than a couple sentences explanation since it’s what started the whole book.
I’d say that if you really enjoy action-packed rescue ops, this book will work for you, but neither character really has a softer side. The writer obviously knows her stuff though because it all rang true. Right now, it’s only $.99 and I’d say it’s worth it for sure, but I don’t think I’d pay full price.
I'm a huge Dana Marton fan. And while I didn't dislike this book, I can't say it was one of my favorites of hers.
The violence in it didn't bother me (sadly, I think it might be a realistic portrayal of cartel life and the heroes/heroines who put their lives on the line to stop the drug trade), although it will probably turn off some readers. I thought it made the hero that much more complicated and interesting. He walked a dark/dangerous edge between vengeance and justice. And it certainly made for some exciting, tense action scenes. I could see this as an action movie.
And I loved the hero's journey as he rediscovered his humanity.
But what felt off to me was the ending. One, the resolution went on too long for me, and two, the tone felt different from the rest of the story--a little cutesy and too neatly wrapped up. Truly, this is serious romantic suspense. But the ending felt like it belonged on a different book.
My two cents. I will certainly be buying more books from Dana Marton.
Clara Roberts is in Mexico doing a recovery of a missing US Citizen. While there, her father, a General in charge of the DOD division for which she works, calls her and asks her to find another missing person - a 17 year old girl with which he has a personal connection. Clara just wants to get home to be with her father when goes in for his first chemo treatment, but due to the sensitivity of the request, she grudgingly agrees. She heads to the town where the girl was last seen to meet up with her father's contact.
Light Walker enters the bar where Clara is waiting, and all hell breaks loose. He grabs Clara's hand, and they run off into the jungle. Light is an ex-SEAL, and is playing chess with the drug cartels in the area. His plan is to make them take each other out, but firsts he needs to stay alive long enough to make that happen and to find the man who killed his brother.
Unlike all of the previous Dana Marton books I've read, I just didn't feel the chemistry between Clara and Light. There were times it was very hard to put down, but those were mostly in the first 1/2. Once I got past the half way mark, things got much more interesting and I ended up staying up until 2am to finish it.
I was not sure if I was going to like this but I was in the mood for a book with some testosterone inspired action with a touch of romance and this fit that description perfectly.
Walker and Clara were going to make a great couple if they did not kill each other first, not for the lack of trying.
Action starts almost on the first page, she gets a call and sets off on a mission and Walker shows up and all order goes to Hades (Amazon gets touchy if I use that other word)
So we set off in this 283 page novel and chaos reigns for about 250 of those pages. You start to wonder if ANYTHING will go right but they take things in stride and Walker always has a plan.
Bottom Line: This was a great story, the chatter and interaction between Clara and Walker was great and humorous (had me laughing a lot), the action was almost over the top but the bit of romance was just enough to give the serious deadly story a bit of a lighter edge at times. The only real downside was that with all the action and entertaining chatter, anytime they were not arguing or in a life or death situation almost seemed boring and I would catch myself scanning to get to the next "action" of any type. So 4 Stars and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED , have fun, you will enjoy this ride.
Not only is it important for her work as investigator for the DOD's Personnel Recovery Unit to find Rosita Ruiz in Mexico, it is also imperative that Clara Roberts find her in order to keep her dying father's indiscretion with the young woman under wraps. Clara's facilitator is supposed to be Light Walker, but after meeting him, she quickly learns that his good looks hide a ruthless mercenary. Light recognizes that Clara is in over her head dealing with Mexican cartel's in order to find this missing girl, and that she jeopardizes his mission of revenge against those who killed his brother, so he does everything he can to get Clara to go home. However, her determination derails all of his attempts to get her to leave and causes him to not only respect her but also care for her as well.
Flash Fire hits all the right notes for a romantic suspense/adventure. Clara is a spunky heroine whose positive traits have been overlooked by men until she meets Light Walker, the rugged hero, who grows to appreciate her. The characters and the plot are well developed including believable action and a skillfully executed story line that builds to a satisfying conclusion. The romance is a slow burn that takes time enough to create a credible relationship between the leads. Even though the story elements seem extremely effective, for whatever reason, I found it difficult to connect with the characters. Overall, however, Flash Fire is a successful romantic suspense/adventure that keeps the reader engrossed until the very end.
I just love this series Ms. Marton spins another outstanding read of danger, action, thrills, heartbreak, mystery in this fast pace action thriller. She takes us back to the jungle where Clara is ending her assignment only to get a call from a love one with a heartbreaking tale that will break her heart. She takes on this assignment out of love to the two most important people in her life. She isn't happy about it but love makes you do many things you do not want to. To top that off she has to work with the crazy mercenary who has a death wish and has an agenda of his own. These two hit head on as sparks fly leaving Clara wondering if her father is nuts for setting her up with such a fruitcake. There is something to say when a book starts out with a man waking up with a scorpion in his pants next to his most personal parts. I had to laugh as my mouth went into O....as I shook my head thinking this can't be good.
Clare always gets her person they might not always come out a live but she always brings them home. American teenager disappears abroad Clare finds herself in more danger trying to put the pieces together to help find a teen. The pieces just do not fit as they go through the pace of finding out just where this teen might be and if she is dead or alive. Clare is a strong willed bullheaded woman that does not give up easy. It seems Light Walker is more interested in sending her back to the USA which she is having nothing to do with. He shows her a wild reckless side she isn't to crazy about. As she finds out more about him and his death wish for revenge she takes on the tacks of keeping him alive if she can only stay alive herself.
Light Walker is on a mission of his own and the flighty Clare is not only getting in his way but going to end of dead if she isn't careful. He has enough on his plate with all his plans falling into place. Now he has to keep her alive take care of the issues as hand as he runs with the big boys in drug running plotting gang against each other which is about to come to ahead and most likely will leave him dead. He must make a choice revenge and most likely death or Clare who seems to be growing on him.
The surprises Ms. Marton throws in will have your brain twisted trying to work out this mystery. She throws you curves, hot tempters, passion as she brings you to the edge with danger, mystery and lies. You get to meet some very seedy characters who do not know which end is up as Walker runs into one trouble after another with Clara usually in the middle of it. She is worse than a dog with a bone when she is on the hunt. Light Walker drags her to questionable places as he tries to show her the best place for her is at home. She isn't into putting her tail between her legs and running unless of course someone has a gun pointed at her than she is all into running her legs off in the other direction. This is one book full of danger as the author keeps you laughing from one mishap to another. Where ever Walker goes there are usually dead bodies when he leaves, leaving Clara in shock at how easy he can take a life. Yep this is one nutty, crazy mercenary. Clara decides she might be better off on her own but Walker isn't having any of that. You do not want to miss watching the sparks fly between these to wonderful characters in this action pack thrilling read..
I love these characters even the drug runners who aren't too smart are pretty cool. I totally enjoyed the action scenes and loved the blowing up parts. Dana paints a picture that you can almost see in your mind. I have been hook on this authors from first book that I picked up. She is my go to author for everything I want in a story. I cannot wait to see the next book she pulls out of that wonderful mind of hers.
If you enjoy books by Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Cindy Gerard, or Anne Stuart you will love Ms. Marton's books. I highly recommend any book this author writes she always gives you entertainment at its finest with her action pack reads filled with danger, mystery, love as she worms her way into your heart. She is my go to author for smiles, laughs as she pulls me into a fast pace plot where things usually blow up or lots of gun fire usually with a little heartbreak as she spins a tale and sparks fly as trouble comes knocking on their door.
An awesome, action-riddled, romantic thriller set against Mexico's seamy drug cartel underworld.
“Nothing woke up a man as quickly in the morning as a scorpion in his pants.”
FLASH FIRE by Dana Marton is quite simply an awesome, action-riddled, romantic thriller. I originally fell in love with this author with her Broslin Creek romantic suspense series, so when I saw that she had a new book out, I knew I had to read it.; I was not disappointed in the least! This book is an adrenaline rush from the get-go.
FLASH FIRE is mostly set in Mexico with a capable, tortured, extremely hot, ex-navy seal turned mercenary hero, and a straight-laced DOD Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit investigator as our heroine. She is on an off-the-books mission to recover a citizen who has disappeared under strange circumstances and favors have been called in to enlist Walker to serve as her facilitator on her mission. Add in South America's seamy underworld of competing drug cartels, espionage, familial issues and titillating suspense for a story that literally grabbed my attention from the first sentence - when the hero wakes to a scorpion in his pants - and never lets go. Some of the story takes place in the Mexican jungles, and it was questionable whether the couple would be taken down by the creepy-crawlies or the banditos.
This was the story of Light Walker and Clara Roberts, two strong, compelling personalities with clashing value systems. To say that they were complete opposites is an understatement. Even so, their chemistry was evident from the start and their attraction simmered for much of the book. I've knocked my rating down 1/2 Wine Glass only because I would have like to have seen a bit more romance. However, to be fair to the book and the characters, neither were looking to hook up and there were a plethora of deadly life or death distractions that required their attention riveted elsewhere.
Walker is on a quest for revenge when he agrees to act as her facilitator. He did not expect the investigator to be a young woman who operates with spreadsheets analyzing and detailing her every move. They each undergo a transformation as the story progresses that will leave the reader rooting for them despite the immense odds against them.
Dana most definitely has a way with words. FLASH FIRE is a thrilling and complex romance with well-orchestrated suspense and mind-boggling twists with a plethora of spine-tingling sequences. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast-paced, high-stakes, romantic suspense laced with danger at each turn. I guarantee it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
More like 4.5/5 What's not to like about this book ? It's got the perfect amount of adrenaline, suspense and romance. The half point I retain is because I would have liked a little more sexy moments between Clara and Walker =)
Excellent romantic suspense! It was exciting and sexy, filled with intrigue and hear-pounding twists and turns. I loved getting to know Walker & Clara's story! I highly recommend this book to anyone that's a fan of sexy romantic suspense! You won't regret it!!
Overall an enjoyable enough read. Fast paced, action packed, and filled with the steamy kind of romance you'd expect from one of these books. If you're looking for a quick easy read, look no further.
However, I'm starting to have a kind of love/hate reaction to these books.
On one hand, I love the characters this author creates. They're so different and unique, whereas a lot of the time in comparable series the characters (especially the heroines) can tend to blend into the same person. I've read some great books by authors that I love, but then not long after finishing them I can't remember the characters' names, much less any distinguishable characteristics about them. I definitely haven't had that problem with any of this author's works.
That having been said, there are plenty of things in this series that frustrates me. They're terribly predictable but what bothers me even more are the endings. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with happily ever after, that's what I typically look for. But good god almighty, the level of cheese and sappiness that gets wrapped up in the last few chapters of this author's works is something I haven't seen in even the most inane romances I've ever read.
But, to be fair, the books are free on kindle unlimited and I enjoy them well enough that I can put up with my eyes nearly rolling out of my head when I get to the endings.
This author continues to write novels full of suspense and intrigue. Once again her two main characters are riveting. Walker is ex military and has been on a mission of revenge for the murder of his brother. He is described as a hard, cold and singularly focused killer. He is a mercenary for hire for the right price. He is asked to help Clara a Personnel Recovery agent to locate a kidnapped daughter. When the second together as they track down leads, their attraction becomes very volatile. A very intense read.
While I know 5 stars is for reserved for "great literature" and this isn't, it was a terrific read! As far as I am concerned, the book was an engaging adventure. It was an over-the-top dash through the jungle of southern Mexico. It kept rolling with superhuman acts of blood and guts by a messed up mega-alpha man, and a smart, tough female who were excellently matched. With a HEA, I couldn't have enjoyed it more.
This is a standalone book that is not a cliffhanger. Clara was asked to investigate the disappearance of a missing girl. Clara's dad, the General, sets up help for her in the form of Light Walker. Light is in the middle of avenging his brothers death when he meets Clara and his world changes. Will Light and Clara get their HEA or will the cartel win?
I throughly enjoyed reading Flash Fire. It is full of action from the get go. It is intense with challenges, life-threatening situation , action and danger all around with no let-up until the very end. I enjoyed the sexual heat and flirting and innuendo between Clara and Walker, and seeing their relationship for each other grow into love.
Two cartels, bandits, compromised police and DEA, a missing American girl, a man set on vengeance and a woman sent to find the girl. That's enough for more than one story, but makes for one full of non-stop action and interesting characters that keep you riveted. This is an author who only gets better with time.
I thought the the first book in this series was good and the second even better. Can't wait to read the next one. The agency and the work they do makes for captivating story lines and I hope she'll write the stories of the other members of the Civilian Recovery Unit.
Here’s for light Walker and his revenge compulsion! But better still for his treatment by the Generals daughter. Even Baku can’t surpass her skills at maneuverability! Great read, exceptionally written and grabs the reader much better than the braking tires of a race cart! Now unencrypted that mystery review! Thanks
Just hot enough with humor in all the right places
Thoroughly enjoyed this two book series. The female characters are intelligent and strong. Part of the story are intense and grip you, while other moments make you laugh out loud. Can't wait to read more from this delightful author.
DNF. God, I couldn't take one more line about how they were such opposites and not suited but attracted. The whole first 30% of the book was all blah blah not my type blah blah well, he/she's kind of hot. Gag and blow my brains out.
Great characters dealing with pain, loss and fear, this story keeps you engaged and wanting to see what happens next. The plot could easily be made into a movie, with its twists and turns. A good read!
Wow, just Wow!!! This book was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed it!!! I fell in love with Walker and had some nice sexy dreams of him. Clara was just too cute. Great book, Great writing.
I absolutely loved this book. In fact I would say it’s the best book Dana has written and I can’t wait to read more of the series. And just for a change it wasn’t spoilt with explicit sex scenes which was a bonus for me. Wonderful book!
Loved this book. If you like romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat while you root for the hero and heroine (who is smart!) then this is the book for you.
