The bride-to-be will find everything from basic bridal sewing to the art of customizing and combining patterns to design that one-of-a-kind gown that compliments image and body type. It covers selecting, preparing, and sewing with bridal fabrics and laces and includes information on many types of hem, button, and spaghetti straps and loop techniques. Embellishment tips for adding pearls and beads, as well as making slips, headpieces, and veils is also included. There is a handy planning checklist and a sewing time line to make sure the dress is finished before the wedding.
Yeah, so obviously I'm not using this for the original purpose, but it is really interesting and applicable to a lot of formal sewing. And c'mon, who doesn't at least think about their future wedding dress once in a while? 😜
I checked this book out of the library when I started working on a bridesmaid dress for a friend. Few home seamstresses have the benefit of knowing the inside construction techniques of ready-made formals. Between this book and my experiences with alterations, I found enough confidence to go ahead with the project and was pleased with the results. This book also has some great pages on designing your own dress, from silhouette to sleeve options to necklines and all the proper names to go with them.
