Though 'Merjella' by Yuvaraja is written for kids/young adults, it is a refreshing read for any age group. Merjella can remind us why fantasy is still the best genre to read.

I got the book in a giveaway.
I am all about fantasy and the premise of the story got me hooked in instantly. However, I had apprehensions whether the content would be mature enough. Two chapters in, those doubts were cleared. There are some books that, despite not written for your age group, succeed in touching your heart. They have this amazing story that just makes you appreciate the genre 'fantasy' so much more. And, lastly, they are the books that justify why reading is the best hobby in the world.
For me, the best part about Merjella was that, although it can be categorized as a book more suitable for kids because of its Thank you to the author for a free review copy of Merjella in exchange for an honest review
There are some books that, despite not written for your age group, succeed in touching your heart. They have this amazing story that just makes you appreciate the genre 'fantasy' so much more. And, lastly, they are the books that justify why reading is the best hobby in the world.
For me, the best part about Merjella was that, although it can be categorized as a book more suitable for kids because of its story, this book managed to captivate me. It is apparent that the author has a vivid and beautiful imagination.
Merjella is mainly about a jello-pus (a blend between octopuses and jellyfishes) who merges (yes, merges), with a woman named Marina to make the most powerful creature that will save the land beneath the sea from evil. To clairfy:
Jellopuses and malojels are the two most powerful species among octopuses and jellyfish. They can transform any life into any other and into any shape and into any dimension. They can go invisible themselves and also make others vanish. They can extend their lifespan by two ways: saving lives and destroying lives
It sounds plain enough but the author ensures you are interested by using a blend of very refined vocabulary, a well thought out plot and colorful characters (both from the inside and outside).
The story contains a series of events, both on Earth and under the sea. With characters like Sandy, the nosy woman to Ryan, the man who thought of himself as an expert on fishes, Deimos, Marina's husband, Qwerty the quirky fish who won't take shit from anyone and Bingo, the novel makes you want to keep reading.
Merjella had these awesome powers like being able to turn back time, save people and make people invisible that made me wish I were a jellopus too. I liked one particular scene where the author had Merjella rewind time to prevent a blast that could have killed hundreds on a train. With this much terrorism in the world and many dying every day due to bomb blasts, its nice to even imagine that they could be turned back.
I liked how the book ended with Merjella fulfilling her prophecy, which her father had predicted for her. This book is suitable for people of all ages and can be read in a single sitting. The best aspect is that the author included these tit bits about sea creatures at the end of each chapter that helped me understand the marine life a lot better. ...more

Coming to the novel When I came to know it's a book about Magic and sea life I was interested .
It is all about the life in the sea and it shows how honest friendship makes our life nice , strong and beautiful.Life under the sea has always fascinated me but I thought it is a book only for kids only but to my surprise I have to write Yes! I liked it so much. It has nice twist and turns at some places.The knowledge shared in between the story about sea animals and plants are very interesting, quite unique and I am sure kids would love the way the story and book is a made like a appropriate mixture of knowledge along with a gripping story shared beautifully by the author.
The story is quite simple and has nice lucid words to understand .
It is made interesting for all ages though its a perfect book for kids and young teenagers.
The author portraits the situations and characters like Jella and her cute friends nicely and interesting leading into a wonderful read time .I was reading a lot of love stories lately so this book came to be a good break and I really enjoyed my days reading it.The chapters are not very long and the story does not drag so it's interesting and fast moving.
It's a small novel so if you are fast reader you can easily complete it within 2 - 3 days .
I am very impatient on finishing books as I do not get much time for reading story books
It was quite good to have read this book within few days.
I would recommend everyone to read it and I should definitely encourage the author to write more books in future and would love to read more from him.Best of Luck !! ...more

First things first, this is one novel idea to form as a book. The author has put in lot of thought into this book creating metaphorical and allegorical references between the current world problems picturing it in a sea world life of fishes , octopuses and also there comes a few humans who play a major part in the story line.

1) Giving it a 3 stars was difficult- Wanted to give 4 but for few exceptions it ***** Good reads Giveaway Winner **** Author signed copy for a honest review about the book.

First things first, this is one novel idea to form as a book. The author has put in lot of thought into this book creating metaphorical and allegorical references between the current world problems picturing it in a sea world life of fishes , octopuses and also there comes a few humans who play a major part in the story line.

1) Giving it a 3 stars was difficult- Wanted to give 4 but for few exceptions it went down a notch.
User reading experience is very important when books are published, if it is bought or given otherwise. Some of the pages had blurred sentences (I saw almost-7 to 8 pages overall) had this kind of effect. Reading was very difficult. Yuvaraja can look into this in his future books and correct it.
2) I also noticed the story going way ward in few places and the ending was quite abrupt.
***** Spolier Alert**** How Deimos was alive was not explained . What happened to Qwerty and Bingo later at the end. Did Merjella go back to the sea. All this could have had a neat tight ending.
Some of the parts where Marina resurfaces with Merjella - how the transformation got adjusted to the real life world is also not explained.

Now coming to the good parts:

1) Almost all of the characters are neatly etched and well thought of. Even the small boxes at the end of the chapters helps the readers why those characters have come into the story. An uniquely written boxes have made this a delightful read.
2) Several of the metaphorical references like the world domination, slaverly, racism, financial deterioration are well referenced in the story and brought alive.
3) Peace is the only existent virtue to nurture in these chaotic times for the human kind is told in relatively simple way between wars in the sea world.
4) The wordings are in lucid English which is encouraged for all age groups to read .This is one such book where any one can pick up and enjoy.
5) It also tells the pros and cons of the scientific advancements in today's world again referencing the metaphorical Ryan's world .

Overall review- Good one time read for a fun filled weekend and also some food for thought in our daily lives. Reading experience could have been better. Way to go Yuvaraja- Want to read more from your workshop!!! All the very best in your endeavors ...more

She has her trusted friends to help and support her and her task is to free her people who were taken prisoners many years ago.

While a lot of planning and tussle is happening under the water, the world above is also not untouched. A scientist is using his knowledge for wrong reasons and this is also impacting the world under water. Jella has to bring both the worlds to peace and Marina helps her understand the intricacies of the outer world.

Positives: While so many other authors are writing about the usual topics, I was glad to see the author attempt a fantasy fiction. It is not easy to build a world under water, let the reader imagine the colors, the colonies and the creatures. Yuvaraja has done a great job building the plot and crafting a story that took me to my childhood days when fantasy fiction used to be my favorite genre.

I liked the way the Preface is written. The author honestly shares that the book has been years’ long effort. He invites readers to write short stories based on the characters and is willing to publish them in future. It closes on the note “Let’s think beyond what is thinkable” and true to this the book lives up to what was promised.

What intrigued me the most was that while you will read the book, the lives of creatures underwater have been shown same as the humans on land – the talks of artificial fins, organ donation, alternative source of energy, state honors for the dead who served the kingdom and many similar words/phrases was not something I had thought would be covered when I started reading the book.

The author has used quotes as dialogues which are inspiring and are well placed. “It takes pride to create, not to destroy” , “No victory is achieved without proper groundwork” were a few of such quotes used in the book.

This book is a juvenile fiction, something like Finding Nemo where there is a fish named Jella whose past was safe in hands of her guardian Mimico until she comes to know about it when she is ready to fight back for her family who was killed by a powerful enemy who owns their kingdom now under water. Was I lost in the book? Undoubtedly I was.
Fantasy is not my genre of interest. But if fantasy is so interesting, it may become my favourite genre in future. The author is very innovative in his story that makes the reader complete the novel at a go.

This will be received well by people of all ages though I can say safely that kids would love it the most.

I have a feeling in my mind that this book will be made into a movie one day and I would love to be invited to the pre-screening. I could recollect my memories of watching movies like Abyss and Finding Nemo when I started reading it though this book is no where related to it.

Book was magnificently written. Fantasy isn't my type of genre but I simply loved the story. It is a hybrid hero story of an octopus cum human supernatural creature Merjella.

It was very different and innovative, gave octopus amazing facts after a few chapters, had suspense, comedy, description of characters at appropriate places.

In short, beautifully written!

Fun to read with exceptional reality hidden behind those words. Jella's story was not only a phenomenal underwater fantasy but also an inspiring saga of friendship, hardships and the ill-fated society we live in. I loved the entire plot and how that encapsulated the big picture. It's full of magic, inspiration and fallacy and sheer mockery has taken a formal attire in writer's words. The story is framed to treat the kids and thus the short messages of loyalty in the form of Mimico, the message of friendship in the form of Bingo and Qwerty and the message of touching our target in the form of Jella are shown in the book. The book teaches us that villains are often seen to be equipped with, treachery and fall-means. But at the end nothing works. The message is nice and the entire book surely touches its finish line, neatly.
