Nothing shines like classic cars under the Miami heat. With engines revving hot and emotions running high, sparks are sure to fly . . .
Tori Chazov isn't exactly the girl next door. For one, if the neighbors found out she's an FBI asset and the daughter of a KGB defector, she'd have to grab her go bag and run. Then there's her day job: making magic happen under the hood of big beautiful muscle cars. She's more likely to be wearing engine grease than mascara, and most guys don't fantasize about their mechanics.
But then most girls don't fantasize about FBI tech geniuses, either, and Tori has it bad for Emery Martin. Emery has a past. She can see it in the way he keeps his body honed like a weapon, in the mysterious scars under his snap-button shirts. She can see it in the way his eyes follow her around the room, even though he never says a word.
He's going to have to start talking now, though. A vicious Russian hit squad is on the way to Miami to take Tori out for good. And without Emery's help, she might not make her last great escape . . .
It can never be said that NYT & USA Today Bestselling author Sidney Bristol has had a ‘normal’ life. She is a recovering roller derby queen, former missionary, and tattoo addict. She grew up in a motor-home on the US highways (with an occasional jaunt into Canada and Mexico), traveling the rodeo circuit with her parents. Sidney has lived abroad in both Russia and Thailand, working with children and teenagers. She now lives in Texas where she splits her time between a job she loves, writing, reading and fostering cats.
Sidney is represented by Nicole Resciniti of the Seymour Agency.
Shift brings us to the world of undercover FBI, hired assassins, sexy computer nerds, and kickass mechanics. Tori and her sister have been on the run, hiding from the Rissian Mafia for most of their lives. But now their past has finally caught up to them and Tori needs the help of Emery, the teams go to tech guy, if she wants to protect herself and her sister. Having people after her isn't exactly pleasant for Tori, but it does bring her closer to her crush so maybe something good can come from it.
I really liked how the suspense was brought into this book, and how neither that nor the romance took over the story. It was an equal mix of what was going on so that nothing ever got lost in the world of Tori and Emery, and the fight they were up against. I loved the parts with the characters were able to be more relaxed, and getting to see Tori try to get Emery to open up was really fun.
My main problem with the story was how slow it was in the beginning, and even at some parts in the book the story seemed to slow down. It made it hard to get into from the very beginning so at first I couldn't connect to the story very well.
I was still happy with the story, though, and I definitely recommend it for romantic suspense lovers like myself. I didn't read the first book in the story and never got lost in what was going on because of that, so I would say it's okay to read as a standalone.

Shift is the second book in the Hot Rides series by Sidney Bristol. The first book in the series, Drive, centered around the couple Aiden and Madison and introduced readers to this group that works out of a classic car garage that is a front for an FBI operation. Shift now picks up the story a couple months after the end of the first book and centers around Tori and Emery so even if you haven't read the first in the series this one would read find as a standalone novel.
Tori Chazov works as a mechanic in the garage that is a front for this FBI operation and Emery Martin is the tech genius for the group. Tori and Emery have a bit of chemistry between this somewhat mismatched couple but then they end up working together when it's found out that there is a vicious Russian hit squad is on the way to Miami to take Tori out for good.
I actually did read Drive and rather enjoyed that book. You have a high speed romantic suspense novel that was completely action packed with a rather fun couple. However, with Shift I found that while the action still appeared in the story it got off to a rather slow start for me.
I'd say with this installment of the series I just never fully connected because I really couldn't get myself attached to the romance between Tori and Emery. I liked Tori well enough with her toughness in the first book and also in this one but Emery just really didn't appeal to me as much as a character. The start of the story it seemed he was barely one step above a cave man with his one word or even no response at all during times Tori interacted with him. Not much of a turn on in my opinion.
Overall, I'd rate this second book of the series 2.5 stars unfortunately. Not as big of a fan of the romance in this one. Still full of action and hot rides though so I'd probably continue on the series.

The geek gets the girl. Or course, this geek is totally hot but it’s not readily obvious, which is refreshing. Sidney Bristol does a great job creating very real and unique characters with both Emery Martin and Tori Chazov. Tori, who’s been crushing on Emery for ages, doesn’t realize that under that computer whiz exterior lurks a lust-worthy body. Emery is conversationally challenged. His monosyllabic answers make it hard to get to know him. His focus on his computers is so absolute that Tori doesn’t even realize he’s intensely attracted to her. Nor does he realize Tori is creating semi-legitimate excuses to be with him. Tori, while beautiful, is no average girl either. As the book blurb explains she’s “more likely to be wearing engine grease than mascara” and that doesn’t bother Emery in the least.
Reading of the perfect hunk meeting the fabulous girl gets old and I can never see myself being friends with the characters. I don’t know about you, but I like to put myself in the middle of the story. Emery and Tori are average, a little flawed and a bit socially awkward.
I also like that the two don’t meet one day and end up in bed, and in love, hours later. These two have been falling in love slowing through their mutual attraction, in a too real scenario. As SHIFT unfolds, the reader becomes aware of the great depth of emotion they’ve each carried for the other. As Tori and Emery are thrown together in a race against the bad guys, they too finally become aware. Once they are together, they both struggle with defining just what’s happening. You know - “What does this mean?”; “Will we see each other after the case?”, “Does he think this is just a fling?”.
This book isn’t just a romance though. There’s lots of suspense too. Russian mobsters, hired assassins, FBI agents, Miami police, a street gang and drug runners keep the excitement level high and the action fast moving. There’s just the right mix of life and death action, relationship and sex.
I felt at times I could have followed the other characters better of I’d read the first book but this novel still works as a stand-alone read. Either way, it’s an entertaining and interesting story.
YAY! I love Sidney Bristol and her Hot Rides series especially this book feeds my loves romance, fast cars, and computers. (I really can't wait until her Beauty and the Geek comes out) A group of people under contract to the FBI with one purpose to take down Michael Evers. But with him in jail now and no word from the FBI powers that be everyone is just waiting around for the other shoe to drop. It drops, it drops in the form of Russian assassins out to kill the two daughter for former KGB spy. My two favorite parts had to deal with one a Tesla Roadster and the other a '57 Chevy Bel Aire. This book was super good! high speed chases, shoot outs, car sex, fast paced story; I inhaled this book.
Emery Martin the quiet computer expert deep undercover FBI agent for the Classic Rides team finds out that the Russians have put out a hit and the uber assassin is on his way now. Emery's priorities switch and his only goal now is to protect Tori at all costs. Just when they think it couldn't get any worse, the FBI is releasing Evers, the idiot rival street gang The Eleventh are in deep with the people out to get even with Classic Rides and Michael Evers and their is someone even worse than Michael Evers out there pulling the strings.
Tori and Roni were raised by their father, former KGB, he raised them like little soldiers. When he finally died Toni and Roni became contract agents for the FBI; an easy way for the government to keep on eye on them. Tori has had a crush on Emery for years, she's trust him and so when he says the Russian mob sent their best assassin to kill you and Roni we need to leave now, she goes. It's nothing new for her she is use to just picking up and changing herself to someone else, but she likes the life she has here and she likes Emery. Emery always had a thing for Tori but never thought he was good enough for her. With her life on the line and everything going to shit they both finally realize they share the same feelings for each other. Trust is what will keep them alive and together.
Overall, I think I liked it more than the first book, it was definitely more intense and well hot nerd.
DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!
After the slow disaster of the first book in the series, which was read very close to this one for clarity purposes, I didn't hold much hope for this story. Sadly, it was as bad as I had feared it would be.
The book was once again very slow moving, which made it suffer early on, even with it being set two months after the events of the first book in the series. While it did pick up eventually, after two books with the same formula of snail-like slow movement early on, then rocket fast finish, I was ready to call it quits on the series by the end of this one.
I liked Tori as a character overall, though her secrets went much deeper than I had thought. I admired her survival in the face of significant odds and liked how she kept her sense of humor, spunk, and identity throughout it all. I liked how she didn't give up on Emery, even though he wasn't the easiest man to fall in love with.
Emery was not a good fit for me. I couldn't see him in the field agent role he kept putting himself in, for one. For another, he was extremely hard to connect with. I get that he's got tortured soul syndrome going on, but he came off entirely too controlled for what he had gone through. I kept wanting him to get angry and confront his family!
While there was a bit of a small mystery forming in this book, it was not enough to keep me interested in the series. I think this will be my last read by this author, as I've not enjoyed much of what she's written that I have read.
Classic Rides may be their legitimate business to the outside world, allowing all of the team to remain "hidden," but Emery's job tends to keep him separated from them as you can usually find him in his own little fortress, surrounded by his computers, doing what he needs to do to keep his teammates safe.
Emery, thanks to a certain set of skills that landed him in trouble, now secretly works for the FBI as an agent and field tech. Although, his job isn't quite the usual per the employee handbook. His talents are a bit more umm...legally challenged. But, as he's now on the right side of the law, and not completely bored out of his mind, he can handle this new side of himself. Plus, it keeps him close to the woman he can't stop thinking about, can't stop wanting and it comes in handy sometimes, like now, when he uses that talent to work a deal for some information regarding a hit. A hit Emery thinks is meant for Tori, the woman he yearns to be with, yet believes she's out of his league as he's the resident geek.
Tori, and her twin, Roni, are the daughters of a KGB spy turned American informant. Though their Dad may be gone now, there are people that believe they have some valuable information. Tori and Roni being part of the same undercover team as Emery doesn't help either.
As for Tori, she is fascinated by all things Emery, aka The Walking Brain, and is finding it harder to hide that fact. Not to mention the fact that he hides his emotions so well, she has no idea what he thinks about her, about anything really.
As Emery uncovers more details regarding the hit, he also learns a little more about Tori and Roni's pasts. What he learns leaves him with mixed emotions, fear for Tori and shock as he gets more of a peek into their childhood. As Roni is out of town with other team members, therefore of the equation right now, Emery needs to know Tori is safe and to be with her to make sure she stays that way.
Can Emery keep her safe? Will the danger be over before Roni returns? Will Tori and Roni's pasts finally be laid to rest? Who is after Tori and Roni? Is it solely tied to their past, or is more going on they aren't aware of yet? What happens when Emery and Tori are in such close quarters together? Will they realize the attraction is mutual? Will they act on it? Is their connection more than physical? Could they have something real growing between them? Is there a HEA in their future?
One-click now to read about this group of misfits, somewhat reformed, that have come together and become a family. Watch as two of them finally act on their chemistry and realize they belong together. Please keep in mind this is book two in the series, Drive being the first, I hadn't previously read the first book, and the author does give some of the back story allowing us to catch up, I do wish I had read the books in order as I feel I would've enjoyed this one more and felt more connected to the characters. All in all, I still found it to be an enjoyable story, though I may have continually felt like I was behind in the story as I didn't have the history from book one in my memory.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
Oh, what an emotional journey these books take us on ... I loved the first in the series, but I think I might even like this one more! I certainly would recommend that you read them in order, as there is background that makes a difference - although I am sure it would be a great read even on its own.
I like strong women, and both Tori and her twin sister have been that since they were tiny. She has fallen for Emery, the IT 'geek' who says very little. To compensate she has developed a brilliantly funny habit of supplying his relies in her head. I really enjoyed how that worked and how her conversations did not exactly tally with reality.
Alongside this smouldering passion is a fast and furious adventure which involves the mob, the Russians, the FBI and the police - and of course the team themselves. It is well plotted and does not stay away from some of the more harsh realities of that kind of adventure - which may necessitate a tissue or two. Whilst we are nowhere near uncovering everything, the end is satisfying for now.
Cannot wait to see what happens next - and I can see myself having a marathon when they are all written, so that I can get the whole picture!
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads. 4 Stars
This was an enjoyable read, it just starts out a bit slow. Once it hits about 25% though the action picks up and it becomes more fast paced. I’ve not read book one and this can be read as a stand-alone.
Emery is the computer geek on the team of FBI agents undercover as the Hot Rides crew. Tori is the mechanic on the team and has always secretly had a thing for Emery, what she doesn’t realize is that he also has the same crush. When Tori’s past comes back to haunt her Emery steps in to protect her and while they’re in hiding together the sparks fly.
I found it a bit difficult to like Emery because of his one word answers to everything. Tori pretty much has imaginary conversations with herself, especially in the beginning, and she pretends he’s actually talking. I just never felt like his character was super likeable and you never really get to know him. I did really enjoy that the two don’t immediately jump into bed with one another, they really get to know one another first (well as much as you can with the silent Emery.) This book is a good mix of suspense and romance and I’ll definitely be reading the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this one. It started out a bit slow for me but once the action got started I couldn't put it down. I love the Hot Rides crew and Tori and Roni were great in this story. Then there is the yummy computer geek Emery (sigh). Tori always knew that her past could catch up with her one day but why now! Life is good and running just doesn't feel right but a Russian hit squad has arrived in Miami and the only hope Tori and Roni have lays in the hands of Emery. Who knew the computer tech had all that muscle and brawn hidden behind those clothes? As the action heats up so does the chemistry between Tori and Emery and Emery is determined to do everything he can to keep Tori and her sister safe.
This is an action packed story that you don't want to miss. I recommend it.
This was just an okay read for me. I found it difficult to get into this story. It never really got my interest. The writing was good though. ARC received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Shift is the 2nd book in the Hot Rides series. Each book can be read as a stand alone but probably better to read in order to get the true gist of the interconnecting characters.
Tori Chazov is an asset for the FBI and the daughter of a KGB defector. Her day to day job is being a mechanic on hot rods. She's not into fashion and is most comfortable in cover alls with grease covering her. Emery Martin is a walking brain and also the FBI's tech genius. He keeps tabs on all members of his team, most especially Tori who he has a crush on. They both have a past that they don't like to talk about. Tori has this picture in her head of who Emery is, a doormat with scars on his back and a quiet man who doesn't say much and as it turns out he just isn't that person and the more she gets to know him the more her crush explodes to something more. A Russian hit squad is after Tori and her twin Roni and she needs Emery to start talking in complete sentences. They will both need to work together, put the puzzle pieces together and hang on for the ride of their life.
Loved the action! The romance is sweet and hot! And! Tori and Emery and all the members of the team are great! This one flowed a bit better for me than the first book, and I loved all of the computer hacker stuff. The group are having to deal with 3 different sets of bad guys: Russians, a gang, and some drug dealing mob type people. Some good suspense! Emery and Tori have a great connection. Love how much he wants to support Tori and will do whatever he needs to do to keep her safe and once they get together, he doesn’t hide from it; he’s all in with Tori. I said the first book reminded me of the Fast and Furious movies; this one does a bit too, and I love that! Looking forward to the next book! The premise sounds great; love second chance!
I'd really this rated a two and a half stars. I like that author takes her characters out of traditional roles often found in action stories. Emery is a geek and Tori a mechanic. He does show himself to have ass kicking abilities but it's his geek skills that feature. Tori is totally able to look after herself, and will jump into danger to protect those she loves. That said the storyline didn't really grab me, but I liked it enough that I will probably read the others in the series.
Rating more accurately between 2 and 3. Decidedly meh. Sex scenes were okay, plot and pacing were just okay. Best was dynamic between protagonists, bit even so, felt like I was skimming something about two people I barely knew and waiting for something interesting, which never arrived. Not bad, just never grabbed me.
Shift bySidney Bristol Hot Rides, #2 Release info: July 26, 2016, Kensington Publishing Genre: Romance, Suspense, Contemporary, Action and Adventure, Mob/Mafia Rating: 5 Quills Heat Level: 3 Flames
MY REVIEW: Hopefully you've already read DRIVE, because this is not a series that you want to read out of order. With Hot Rides, Sidney Bristol has created an action-packed, but complex, plot featuring mob hits, street racing, drug import/export, and FBI infiltration. The team is constantly in danger, unsure whether or not to even trust each other. When one enemy is taken down, another takes his place without a single break in the action. In order to truly understand what is going on in this series, you must read it like a serial even though the main conflict of each book is resolved.
Tori is not quite as three-dimensional a character as Madison from book 1 was so I'm not naming this one a #WfYLFavorite, but she is a bad-a** nonetheless. The author never disappoints when it comes to writing female leads that can hold their own against over-protective males. Tori is not only experienced in boxing with a side of dirty street-fighting, but she's a sharpshooter and thinks quickly on her toes as well. Though her personality isn't really all that unique and there was an interrogation at the end that didn't seem to make sense for her character at all, I still very much liked her.
Emery is the character that really sold this one for me. By now, you all know that I prefer a strong Beta Male over an Alpha any day. Emery is my Beta Male poster-boy. "The Walking Brain" is not only the team's tech-savvy analyst, he also thinks all plans through more than any other member. Though he is few in words, he is capable in all other ops tactics, including driving, fighting, and shooting. He is definitely not the leader, but he is the one you want on your side, making Tori a very lucky girl, especially when she discovers that he is just as passionate as he is intelligent.
I am on pins and needles waiting for more from this series. From what I can tell with the breadcrumbs left, there are at the very least two more books ahead. As fast-paced as these stories are, they aren't slowing down anytime soon.
Sidney Bristol is a new author to me and Shift is the second book of the Hot Rides Series. This story can be read as a standalone, but I think reading the first installment of Hot Rides would give you a better background.
Tori Chazov isn’t her real name, but to keep her and her sister alive they have to attract little attention as possible, but for Tori that becomes a bit difficult when she shows off her mad skills of being a woman mechanic when Emery strolls in.
Most men don’t fantasize about their mechanic, but Emery isn’t like most men.
Emery isn’t who Tori believes, but he just got word that a vicious Russian hit squad is on their way to finish Tori off for good. Instead of taking a backseat he put everything on the line to save her, but when pleasure starts mixing with business both Tori and Emery might make a mistakes that will cost both their lives.
In the beginning In the beginning .Shift seemed to start off at a slow pace, but around 30% it started to speed up. I enjoyed Tori’s character of how she was spunky, intelligent and finding out she was a former spy. She also managed to get him to talk about himself which you could tell was an uncomfortable topic. As much as I loved Tori, I thought I would have connected with Emery, but sadly I wasn’t able too. Like I said before, he’s been in his own shell and never really had to communicate with people, but found his emotional mood swings frustrating. One minute he’s strong and utterly confident and then the next he’s a young boy who’s insecure and unsure. I understand where Sidney was going with this, but I felt like his emotions switched too much that I couldn’t keep up, it seemed to take away from the story of having someone coming after Tori.
However, I enjoyed the connection between Tori and Emery because she was able to not only bring Emery out of his shell, but we got to see the man beneath all the scars his parent and ungrateful brother had inflicted emotionally. Overall I found the story interesting and the build up for their chemistry was great!
Reviewing on Behalf of Once Upon An Alpha **ARC for Honest Review**
Shift once again brings us into the undercover lives of several FBI agents and more. While deep undercover these folks also get to play around with and work on some smokin’ hot cars… a dream come true for many folks.
Tori is a mechanic at the garage, she’s also on the run from a Russian hit squad – and they’ve located her and her sister. If there can be a good part in this it’s that now she’s getting the chance to get up close and personal with the agent she’s been crushing on. Emery might be the unit’s tech geek, but his body and attitude spell out danger in caps. He’s noticed Tori and he’s attracted, he just isn’t making a move – until it’s been forced on him. When the lady is in danger he cannot deny any longer just what she means to him – so the past be damned as he sets out to protect the woman of his heart.
Hot Rides is a series with a lot of characters, at times keeping them straight can be a challenge. We’re talking the good guys, the bad guys and the other influences that pop up. So while I believe it’s possible to read each story on it’s own… it is always my belief that any series is best when read from start to finish.
Emery and Tori’s story is full of action, romance and issues from their pasts that must be dealt with. There were moments that the story was slower paced than I expect in a romantic suspense novel, but you soon get into the rhythm of the story. Considering the crazy backstory for these characters and the lives that they lead – Tori and Emery were a likable and believable couple.
If you love danger, mystery, hot cars and even hotter romance – then Shift is the perfect story for you.
*I received an e-ARC of Shift from the publisher, Kensington Books – Zebra Shout and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
Fast and Furious but with an FBI undercover feature is what came to mind as I read this book.
The Hot Rides team is undercover in a muscle garage that provides classic cars, sometimes flips stolen cars and is involved with street racing activities. Their tech guru is Emery Martin. Most people on the street think he is a money launderer and as such a go-to guy for many bad guys in the area. When Emery finds out a Russian team of assassins are being sent to kill Tori and Roni Chazov, his teammates, he immediately takes action. From that point on there the pace picks up in more ways than one.
Emery and Tori have been aware of one another for some time and have fantasized quite a bit without acting on the interest they feel for one another. As they spend time together trying to avoid the assassins their assumptions are replaced with reality and they like what they are seeing, feeling and eventually experience – like it a lot. However, they have bad guys to fight, information they need to uncover and secrets to share with one another before the book ends. Survival is in question for both of them as well as their team members. The book left me satisfied that the story ended in a good place but also left me with the need to read book three to find out what is REALLY going on and how everything will eventually be resolved.
This is a great book that is able to stand on its own without reading book one of the series. I have to say that once I got past about page 40 I was hooked and could not put it down. In fact, I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish it. Emery was so much more than Tori thought he might be. He was a great book boyfriend and she was the perfect match for him.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book in the Hot Rides series. While I thought it was a little bit better than the first book it still was a little slow in the beginning. But it did eventually pick up. Also the story line became confusing at times because there are so many pieces to this story line. Although the first one did not necessarily end on a cliffhanger, I think it does help if you read it. This story is a combination of suspense and romance. The premise is you have a group of people who work secretly for the FBI. Emery, the behind the scenes computer expert, does not have a lot of interaction with the group. He discovers the Russians, have put a hit out on Tori and her twin sister Roni. Emery has always had a crush on Tori but has never let his feelings known. When he discovers Tori is in danger, he takes it upon himself to become her protector; and what a protector he is. Tori has also secretly had a crush on Emery. Once the excitement and danger starts, they become closer and closer. Soon they are acting on this attraction. Both characters are strong. They both know how to stand up for themselves and definitely protect each other. Tori is definitely no wall-flower. At a young age, her sister and her, learned how to survive. They don’t take any crap from anyone. At first you get the feeling because Emery is more behind the scenes and sits in front of the computer, that maybe he wouldn’t be up for field work. But don’t let that fool you. He is definitely one bad-ass FBI agent. While there is an ending to Tori and Emery’s romance and can perhaps could be read as a stand-alone, there is not an ending to the story line. There are many questions that still are not answered at the end of this book.
Shift is the second book in the Hot Rides series by Sidney Bristol. The first book Drive, introduces Aiden and his team, who work at a classic car garage that is also a front for their FBI operations. Shift picks up shortly after the happenings in Drive and focuses on Emery aka "The Walking Brain" and Tori who is hiding from the Russian Mob. When things hit the fan we find out that they have both been harboring a secret crush on each other without the other ever knowing. Emery is a tech genius and Tori is a mechanic but boy when these two get together do they seem to be just the right fit. Things get hot, fun, and a little crazy while they're on the run but that only helps to bring out the feelings they might would otherwise hide.
I really liked both Emery and Tori and thought it was nice that they were both a bit of an unconventional character. Emery has a limp and is conversationally challenged and Tori is a bit of a Tomboy who would rather work on cars than fix up and who wears a sports bra instead of lace. It was rather refreshing actually. The glimpses of Aiden and Madison were nice for me since I have read Drive but I liked that you wouldn't necessarily have had to read the first book to be able to get into this one. The characters were my favorite part of Shift. I felt that after a while the chase and all that jazz got a bit dull and dragged out, but I still liked the story plot overall. So although I didn't love this one quite as much as I had hoped, I still think it was a solid read and am ready to get my hands on Chase ( Hot Rides #3 ).
** I received this book from the publisher solely in exchange for my honest review.**
Emery is a technical genius, knows nearly everything there is to know about his entire team and has a secret crush on Tori. He's the strong, silent computer nerd, but he's got another trick up his sleeve...he's also a field agent and good at putting away the bad guys. Tori's an FBI asset, mechanic and street racer. Her father was closely tied to the Russian mob. When Dad's past comes to eliminate Tori's future, Emery intercepts the intel. With no help (or apparent concern) from his team leader, Emery picks Tori up and they go into hiding - which is when they act on their mutual attraction. There's a lot of action, suspense, humor and their own romance which is as unique as they are. This book progressed at a pace that rivals the cars she works on and races. I enjoyed this couple more that I thought that I would. They are a bit of an unlikely pair but really are great together. I will warn you that this is book 2 in the series. It can be read as a stand alone (as I did). The characters on the team (as well as their function within the team) are well described so I wasn't at a loss by not reading book 1. I will be picking it up as well as the rest of the series as it becomes available. BUT the story doesn't come to a complete conclusion as it is continued on with the next book in the series. There is enough of a wrap up for plenty of closure for Emery and Tori's story. The bigger picture will continue into book 3. I recommend this series as well as this author for fast paced action with plenty of heart. I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for review.
Shift is the second book of a series featuring a team of undercover FBI operatives in Miami. This book focuses on the “Walking Brain” Emery Martin. He’s the team’s tech genius, who is also overly infatuated with teammate and mechanic, Tori Chazov. Tori and her twin, Roni, have been on the run most of their lives due to their deceased father, who was a former KGB agent. Word on the street is that a Russian hit team is looking to take out Tori and Roni, but Emery will not let that happen, especially with his feelings for Tori. Along with that, the book continues with a plot involving a bad guy that was put away in book 1, and his possible connection to a local racing gang.
I really loved this book. The action was just as intense as the chemistry between Emery and Tori. Emery is the total package – extremely intelligent, strong, protective, and sexy. Tori and her “silly crush” on him brought some humor, but the heat when they were together… wow! Not to mention that they’re both super badass and intent on bringing down this hit team, and protecting their crew. I’ve read a few reviews where it was hard to follow unless having read the first book. I don’t agree with that; while a lot of characters are introduced, I feel like the author does a good job of providing background and detail information on everyone to where new readers can follow along (although obviously it is a good idea to read in order). I didn’t read the first book, but I will because I’m hooked.

I have always had a soft spot for fast cars and hot men. Goes back to my younger days when I most definitely had a lead foot and will always love a sexy man especially one who knows his way around computer.
And if he always happens to know his way around a woman's body so much the better. Emery is definitely not what one thinks of as a geek as he can also get down and dirty with his hands or a gun. And he will use whatever is needed to keep Tori safe. When he finds out that there is a hit team on her tail, they take off to lay low and to heat things up.
I enjoyed reading SHIFT. Tori is a great heroine who is spunky and far from ladylike. Her father raised her and her twin to survive using any means necessary. And the sparks that fly when she teams up with Emery were almost enough to overheat my tablet.
The pacing is quick and just as soon as one question gets answered, another five pop up. This book is sure to hold a reader's attention. The characters are well developed and the dialogue is fast and furious. I do recommend this book to any of my readers who also enjoy hot cars, hotter men and a mystery that keeps on going. I can hardly wait for the next book so I can get some more of my questions answered.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.
Although this can be a stand alone , reading DRIVE first would certainly benefit the reader to get the bigger picture of the operation going on! This second book was about Emery & Tori discovering their feelings for each other while trying to solve issues between corrupt organizations & trying to keep Tori safe ! I'll completely admit I enjoyed this second book more because of the action & specific chemistry between THESE TWO!. The first book Drive sets the stage with a lot of discussion about racing & car models , parts etc..,, which I know little about & occasionally left me slightly distracted however , in this second book SHIFT I LITERALLY couldn't put it down because of the hot chemistry between these two characters! Emery was a fine sexy alpha male that had a lot to say as he loosened up with Tori! This book was so well written as far as the action packed chase scenes that I could easily see this as a weekly TV series with a whole set of appealing characters! I've read Sidneys books for several years now & will continue to do so based solely on this book & her creative mind she manages to put between pages ... Let alone all the SEXY hot lingering moments she can whip up consuming multiple pages of pure joy to devour ! . So looking forward to more from her! Excellent work! A must read as usual!
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
Emery isn’t your typical computer genius. He also has serious FBI field skills. However he is very introverted and lacks social skills. When he is “in the zone” he is oblivious to all around him.
Tori is a former spy, turned very talented auto mechanic, working for the FBI. She is intense, independent and very capable of taking care of herself.
Tori and Emery have been dancing around each other for awhile. When Tori makes her move, neither can believe the other is actually interested in them. Tori craves social interaction, Emery does not. Tori has to continually tell Emery to “speak in complete sentences.” The chemistry between them reaches out and grabs you.
Emery has gotten wind of an assassin coming to Miami for Tori and Roni. His protective instincts wind up. Roni is off with some of their crew racing, so he takes Tori and runs. Emery vacillates between shy computer guy to alpha male.
While this book can be read as a standalone, the story and characters do continue on from book one. I highly recommend reading Drive first.
This story is action packed. It starts off a little slow, but once it got going, I literally could not put it down. I stayed up way too late to finish it. Pick it up, you won’t be disappointed!
This is a fast paced story about spies, fast cars, and two people Emery Martin the geek of the group and Tori Chavoz, one of the twins that the team is protecting. Their father an ex KGB defected many years ago but people in Russia still want the dead. They are now all working undercover with the FBI. When Roni the other twin and three members of the team leave Emery has set his sights on protecting Tori. When he cannot contact their handler when he finds out of a hit team arriving he decides to take her out of town. This is what Tori has been wanting for a while now. To be alone with Emery and she can only hope that he feels the same way for her. When they are alone and she finds out some secrets of his she is drawn more towards him. When she finds out that he is not just a computer geek, but someone who has to be reckoned with in a fight, shooting, and driving this only makes her want him more. Emery cannot talk around Tori everything is one word answers and this is driving her crazy not realizing that he is totally attracted to her he feels if he lets go he won’t be able to real himself back in. this right here is worth the book the sexual tension is great along with the banter really makes this book. For when there is a slow part you still have that. A good story and very fast paced. I got this book from netgalley. I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
This is the second book in the Classic Rides series, about an undercover gang working for the FBI. They operate out of a auto repair garage owned by Aidan and Julian, both who were coerced into helping the FBI. The first book introduced the reader to the group, the set up, the bad guys and how Aidan and Madison got together. In this book, Tori, one of the Russian twins protected by the FBI, has had a crush on the gang's geek, Emery. Like in the last few books that I have read, both H and h are the products of poor parenting skills. Emery's parents thought that his older brother could do no wrong and totally ignored him. The twins mother was murdered and their father only taught them survival skills. Emery learns that a Russian assassin is coming for the twins. Toni is out of town with some of the group, so he takes off with Tori. Among other things, she finds out that her feelings are not one sided. They find out that the FBI has been using the group as bait (not surprising after the current Director of the FBI, Comedy, just betrayed the American people, by protecting Hillary), and there is much more going on then they realized. Lots of action, but I had trouble visualizing some of it.
