“When The Jaguar Sleep” by J.A. Kalis is her debut novel, and my first read by this author. I don’t read a lot of jungle/adventure books, but I was quite happy with what I read. Great characters and and an amazingly descriptive plot that takes place mostly in the Ecuadorian Jungle. It’s a race for survival and escape with some really good background into the Inca/Aztec culture. Fast paced and exciting from start to finish. The finish is a bit of a cliffhanger,

When the Jaguar Sleeps: A Jungle Adventure is an adventure novel by J.A. Kalis. It is a very good novel and it captivates the reader immediately and keeps the action up until the very end. The setting in the Ecuador jungle is described in such detail that one can imagine being there and hearing the noises and actually feeling the humidity. The characters are realistic and well-developed. Overall, it is an excellent novel.

Reading this book, I would never know that this was the first and only book J.A. Kalis had written. I’m not usually one for adventure novels, but something about this book piqued my interest. And I’m glad I read it. A fast-paced story with well-developed characters. I imagine the author had been to the Amazon before, as he provided such rich (but not boring) detail that I felt like I really never need to go there. From the incident with the plane at the very beginning all the way through the end ...more

Perhaps it's because I read this book in the week leading up to Halloween, or maybe it's just because I was struck with a strangely morbid mood, but I've decided to perform a book autopsy instead of a standard review. A booktopsy? Yeah, I like it.

Wearing my standard booktopsy gear (camouflage lounge pants and my favorite Relay For Life hoodie) and snuggled in my comfy reading chair I gaze at the specimen before me. Any good autopsy starts with a general inspection, so my booktopsy will do the s

I sincerely hope that adventure stories continue to flourish as they have in the past. When I become old enough to start reading adult fiction, I discovered books about Tarzan, Robinson Crusoe, and Moby Dick. Later I graduated to authors like Earnest Hemmingway, Clive Cussler, and Michael Crichton. While the stories these writers produced vary widely in subject matter, they have many similarities, in that they pull you into adventures that hold your attention

I had trouble getting the story to actually download. It was sent to me a second time and it still did not download. I had to go into my email to view it. I finally left it on my tablet because I had to be quick to get it to open so that I could view it. Thankfully the story was all there. I would have been disappointed to be left hanging.

This is the first book in a contemporary action/adventure series taking place mainly in the Amazon jungle of Ecuador. It also can fit into the sub-genres of survival story and mystery, as it has large amounts of both.

Didier and Florent are just two normal people on a plane among a handful of other people who wanted to take a trip and see the Amazon rainforest and nearby volcanoes from the air. But when the plane crashes in the deepest part of the forest, killing some of the people and badly inju

Although an avid reader, I rarely finish a book within a week. (Most often, I am concurrently working on two or three books.) J.A. Kalis caught me a bit off guard with “When the Jaguar Sleeps”, and I was glued to this book over a four-day period until I had finished it. I’m very glad I gave this book a shot.
The story begins with a plane-ride reflection by protagonist Florent regarding the tragic loss of his girlfriend and the deep torment that he carried with him, and within a couple of paragra

I must admit, I'm not a great fan of adventure novels. But, as I always strive to do, I entered the world of When the Jaguar Sleeps with an open mind. The result was better than I expected.

The story setup is pretty straightforward: after a plane crash in the Ecuadorian jungle, survivors begin a desperate trek through the tropical forest, trying to survive and reach safety. Treasure hunters, hostile natives, and deadly wildlife are only some of the dangers lurking in the misty shadows.

A group of six people are flying over the Ecuadorian Rainforest when their plane crashes. After several days waiting to be rescued at the crash site, the only survivors, Didier and Florent, set off into the jungle, following the course of the river. Didier and Florent face many dangers; not only from the hostile Acua Indians, but also from a group of tomb robbers who are operating in the area. There are far reaching consequences when their paths cross.

When The Jaguar Sleeps is one of the very few books I've read that I honest-to-goodness kept thinking, "This story would make an incredible movie." Written in the type of vivid detail that will draw a reader right into the remote, dense, and dangerous rainforest, it's impossible not to get lost yourself in the story.

When the Jaguar Sleeps: A Jungle Adventure is an exciting story by J.A. Kalis. Didier and Florent are the only survivors of a plane crash in a remote section of the Amazon jungle known for its hostile tribes. After giving up hope of being rescued, the injured men, frustrated by the sweltering heat, venture into the mosquito-infested jungle, looking for villagers to assist them.

They come across a few murdered Indians and a gold artifact that Flor

This is a great, action packed novel. I felt like I was really in the jungle and the setting was properly researched.

I don't want to give away the plot, but it follows 2 plane crash survivors through the jungle trying to get back to safety and they meet with natives and grave robbers. There is always danger lurking somewhere, sometimes the situation is worse than others. There is sort of a twist at the ending that leaves it open for a sequel, should the author so choose, or it could be left as

This book was fast paced and used great descriptive langue (The sudden light stung his irises like a thorn) that enhanced my reading experience. Didier and Florent board a plane which comes down in the jungle. Kalis does the scene well and the story continues with lots of plot twists that keep you guessing. “When The Jaguar Sleeps” by J.A. Kalis takes you deep into the Ecuadorian jungle following two, young male survivors of a plane crash, Didier and Florent. The plane was en route to a scheduled jungle tour prior to the fatal mishap, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and the remaining tourists.

The author wastes no time using colorful description to set the stage for dangerous adventure facing the two men. The drama builds as the survivors debate whether to stay near the plane waiting for rescue

This is an exciting adventure following 2 plane crash survivors through the jungle. Not only do they experience danger from the jungle themselves, it turns out there is Inca gold they stumble upon which brings with it it's own dangers. There are natives to avoid as well as treasure hunters!

It is a fairly quick read which I enjoy since I don't have a lot of time to read a longer book. I'm excited to read Part 2 next! If you're looking for an adventure book with some treasure hunting excitement,

All the elements of a good story are in this novel: suspense, unexpected turns, drama, tension, unraveling problems or hardships. All of these test a character’s will and the durability of his or her spirit. They keep the reader glued to the story. . . . Good pace, good descriptions, just enough to give context to the storyline.

Six people, including the pilot and a local guide, take off from a Quito (Ecuador) airport on single-blade propeller Cessna. The tourists—a Swiss couple, a Belgian named,

I absolutely loved reading this and thought it was an amazing jungle adventure book. The characters are fun and engaging and the story is filled with action and intrigue. I couldn't get enough, and I loved the way the author cranked up the emotional tension and never really let it go back down. I thought this was a great book. It follows the survivors of a plane crash in the jungle in Ecuador, who thought they were going on vacation but end up fighting just to stay alive. They've got to overcome starvation, injuries, tomb raiders, local tribes, and even the jungle itself. It has a touch of Indiana Jones mixed with survivalism.
