Adele Clee writes historical romance mysteries set in the early nineteenth century. Her stories blend romance with intrigue, gothic atmosphere, and a touch of scandal, often unfolding in Regency and early Victorian London. Readers praise her scarred heroines, brooding heroes, and the way love and mystery intertwine across each series.
You know when you read a book and you keep wondering how in the world did they fall in love? That is what you keep thinking here. There was NO REASON for them to end up together. The heroine was pretty horrible. She expected the hero to drop everything and help her. The hero was understandably hard and rude, but I wanted to hit him for his lack of attitude when it came to gathering information. Overall, it's not super well written. It's just normal.
Paranormal. Regency. Romance. The author took three of my favorite things, bundled them up, and made me an extremely happy person. I love reading, but one of the hazards of reading a ton is that you come across many of the same storylines just packaged in different ways. That being said, there is nothing I love more than coming across something fresh- a new twist I haven't seen before. Loved this book. Heroine was independent and assertive without coming across as pushy- which is pet peeve of mine. The broody hero? Yup. Want me some. They were just likable characters. Really, really, really want the next book. Like right now. This minute. Okay, enough gushing... I'll just be sitting here impatiently waiting for the next in the series.
Hmmmm... the first two books I read by this author I totally enjoyed, but this one just fell flat as a pancake!
Alex the vampire Earl (but only for a couple years), who hides away in his mansion. Eve the young woman who is about as interesting as toast.
The impression given of Alex is that he was a totally self absorbed manwhore jerk before a beautiful vampiress turned him while travelling in Bulgaria. (Apparently, a lot of good looking young British aristocrats have bumped into the gorgeous Bulgarian vampiress... And they call themselves 'the Brotherhood'.) Anyways, I really didn't see why Alex all of a sudden finds a conscience for Eve. There seems to be some kinda insta mating magic going on but it's never explained or even contemplated much.
The bad guys were very obvious and frankly the whole plot was so predictable I ended up skimming quite a bit.
Blah blah blah.. I don't care.
Safety? fine. Too fine maybe? Very little world building because these aristocratic vampires don't seem to know much about being vampires.
I HATE IT, when characters fall in love for no obvious reason. What is is that makes you admire a specific person beyond their good looks and ... oh yeah nothing else. But I liked that the story was somewhat thought through which is why 3 stars are in order.
A Paranormal Regency Romance I love Regency, Romance, and Paranormal and this one had all 3! It is a fun concept! Alexander was brooding, dark, and sexy. Another reviewer compared him to Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and they are pretty spot on. He despises what he has become and can’t seem to accept it. But, maybe love can help! Eve was a very strong character she was smart, stubborn, and determined. I do agree with other reviewers who said Eve jumped into “bed” with the man rather quickly. She didn’t even like him, then was kissing him in the garden. She just seemed more intelligent than that and I would have liked for Alexander to have had to try a little harder to win her heart. I don’t mind the H & h falling in love quickly, but I just didn’t see a basis for their love other than the physical. I needed at least one discussion where they realized they had more in common than they thought, or got to know each other on a deeper level before Eve blurts out she loves him. I have read everything published by Adele Clee and one of my favorite things about her is her consistency. I think of her 18 works I've only given two 3-star ratings. The rest are 4s or 5s. So, if you liked this book I would recommend more of her books. A Simple Case of Seduction is my personal favorite. WARNING: there is sex in this book, it is not erotica, but enough to be a steamy & hot adult romance. Please do not read if you are looking for something PG. Romance-4/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-3/5
I really enjoyed this book, it's the first that I've read by this author but I've already gone ahead and bought the rest of the series. Alexander and Evelyn could not be more different but the pull between them is undeniable.
This mixes 3 things I love in a story: historical UK, romance and fantasy/paranormal. I liked this twist on the classic vampire man falls in love with a mortal woman story and the brotherhood that he formed with the other 2 vampires. Interested to see what happens next.
I stopped reading after a while, I didn't much care for the heroine and her outright rudeness towards the male hero. She is a total stranger, she comes into his home one night, breaks his window when he refuses to let her in, she forcefully get in, insults him, convince him to help her with her aunt who had an accident, gets help from him, pompously she decides he has to give her and her aunt hospitality for the night, because she and her aunt are two well-bred ladies (self-entitled much?) even though there was possibility to get some space in a inn nearby, she says he didn't offer her any hot water or food (but it is not true, because his governess does offer her nice hospitality comprised of food and hot water, so what is she complaining about?), etc, etc. She came trough as a spoiled brat, instead of a cool heroine. Everything about her felt forced. Her dislike for him/her insta-attraction for him, their love. I give two stars instead of one because the writing style was nice and the world building too, but I am not going to continue the series.
It was good, and I love the characters and am heading straight on to book 2... but I kind of which it was 'more', if that makes sense? Not as in longer (although, I'm not opposed to longer ;), but with really good books you're sucked into the world. This one was still a little thin in that regard. But as I said, it's good and good enough to make me (a cheapskate) spend money on the next one.
Very much alone with a strange affliction Alexander lives for the night and flees the day! Elizabeth carriage is over turned and she seeks help for her aunt who is hurt! Fate intervenes and nothing will be the same!
Adele Clee's "Lost to the Night", the start of her Brotherhood series, was an okay to cute read and does not follow the lines of any typical vampire romance story. The melancholy vampire, Alexander, might be likened to Angel from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in some respects. He hates what he is, wonders if he has a soul, believes himself unworthy of love.... Whereas, Angel will turn into the torturous Angelous once he's achieved only a moment of true happiness and then we see many deadly vampiric aspects - as much as television will allow, but with Alexander, his only true, deadly and horrific vampire status comes about when antagonist Southerby threatens Alexander's love interest Eve, and slashes Alexander with a knife. The tortured vampire has been done before, although Clee's version was somewhat cute with Alexander's self-loathing and needing Eve's love to bolster him. The non-lethal vampire only drinking animal blood was introduced in a more comical way by Stephanie Meyer's in her "Twilight" series, with the Cullen family calling themselves "vegetarian" vampires. Now that's a hoot and laugh-out-loud worthy! However, kudos to Clee for presenting her vampires as non-lethal as possible, hence making them likeable and, one assumes, easier to hide what they are.
Clee does keep this regency paranormal romance true to history; a regency is set during the time period of the British Regency - the early 19th century, roughly the years 1811 through 1820. Others have commented on the somewhat stilted dialogue, but it does actually work with this era. People sound "stuffy" back then, to what readers today might expect. Like many other regency novels this reader has read, Clee's tale was very slow to start; unfortunately, it was also fairly predictable and didn't differ too much from many similar stories... just substitute a vampire for your typical aristocrat. Sadly, this reader did fight boredom with this story due to the predictability. On the plus side, Eve was a strong female exhibiting characteristics one might associate with a younger alpha coming into their powers and strength, while vampire Alexander exhibited the typical wishy washy and weak characteristics many associate with female submissives. This role reversal may have been the only defining characteristic to label this tale "original" in any way. Another reviewer likened the beginning of the tale to "Beauty and the Beast", while this reader found connections with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" - minus the slaying.
There were a few spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, but not enough to toss a reader from Clee's world. The tale was okay to while away a few hours - at best, but not quite good enough to convince this reader to continue with the series. However, based on comments concerning some of Clee's other writings, this reader will not rule out reading her again. She just won't bother with the Brotherhood series.
Evelyn Bromwell is traveling with her aunt to meet the man she expects to marry. Evelyn isn't in love, but security drives her to consider marriage. She and her aunt are caught in a storm and their carriage overturns. Evelyn's aunt and coachman are badly injured. Evelyn runs through the forest in search of help and stumbles across a chained gate blocking her way to a dilapidated manor. Determined to save her aunt, Evelyn climbs the gate, forces her way into the house, and demands that the man inside help her.
Alexander Cole is a selfish man only concerned with his own misery. Two years ago a beautiful woman bewitched him and he'd woken to find himself changed, craving blood and unable to bear sunlight. He locked himself away in his manor and spread rumors that he had been terribly disfigured in an accident. Now he spends every day alone, living on animal blood and cursing his loneliness.
When Evelyn arrives at his home, Alex isn't overwhelmed by his craving for her blood. Instead she stirs pity in him, and for the first time in two years Alex glimpses his own humanity. Determined to discover if the feelings will last, Alex agrees to help her. When Evelyn and her aunt are forced to stay in his home until her soon to be fiancee arrives, she awakens other feelings in him that he hadn't felt even before he was cursed.
I haven't read many vampire novels, but I think this would be considered "vampire lite". The focus is on Regency romance and the vampire plot is secondary. It does add a flavor with a light tang of the supernatural that makes this story unique . Alex is a tortured soul, isolated and tormented. Evelyn is a strong and capable heroine, fighting to force her way into Alex's heart. I enjoyed all the characters in the book and the story was well told and entertaining. This isn't a clean read, there are passionate and explicit love scenes.
I've listened to a few audiobooks narrated by Kylie Stewart and they're always enjoyable. The narrator speaks with an accent that's very pleasant. I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This one is a complete and total rough start. But once you get past the first two pages to meet the main female lead, it's quite entertaining. Her attitude in the time. The story takes place in is quite amusing. Her back-and-forth with the supposedly "beastly" Lord Hale. Appealed to me. Usually when you release historical romances. Very few of the female leads are that forthcoming because of the thoughts of the time. This is one of the things that allowed me to ignore the completely and utterly horrible narration of the story. She doesn't make very many choice distinctions between the characters. At first when it first starts out in some spots. She sounds like there's an emergency somewhere she's reading so fast. I guess the thing that annoyed me the most is really if the recording audible you think someone would go over the pronunciation or at least catch the pronunciation mistakes in editing because when I hear something like that. It sort of throws me out of my own internal movie, not talking about the difference between tamato and tomato I'm talking things like bed-raggled as opposed to bedraggled many other things, but there are very amusing points of the story. It is not the most in depth, nor is it the very best I've ever read. But there are enough entertaining points and enough amusing fairytale qualities to make it something easy to listen to while doing paperwork or chores including cooking, that's one thing if you want something light to bring a smile to the romance between the two main characters as well as their camaraderie will give you that. Not to mention the humor between the other supporting characters. There were a few points where I actually laughed out loud and that is one reason I will give this book at least three stars. Imagining Mr. Southerby traipsing to the forest after 100 fairies is just too good :-)
Whilst on a trip to Bavaria , Alexander Cole meets a woman who he is drawn too , he follows her , and is drawn into what he believes, is going to be an evening of pleasure, he’s wrong . He looses consciousness, and on awakening everything has changed , feeling empty ,cold, lonely , he returns to his home in Hampshire and locks himself away , seeing no one, only going out at night , and eating nothing except animal blood . Two years later he meets a very determined, feisty young woman ,who will not take no for an answer when she demands he help her aunt after a carriage accident . Evelyn Bromwell is that woman , she’s on her way to see a neighbor of Alex’s, to agree a betrothal, only things start to go wrong ,and over a few days Alex and Eve begin to realise a strange pull between the two of them . When Alex visits them , the manor is deserted ,and desperate to make sure all is well ,he follows her to London . Alex is a complicated man , his feelings and emotions are all over the place , he wants Eve but is so scared she won’t accept who he really is , she won’t want the monster inside . This is in places an almost heartbreaking story , but is told so well , your rooting for them the whole way through , dying for him to tell her the truth, and for her to say it’s ok , I love you no matter what . It’s begging for a HEA . Fingers crossed!
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Well, if I had realized it was a vampire story, I would not have read it, vampire stories not being one of my favorite genres. But, in spite of that, it was a fairly good book - again, if you are into vampire stories. It would have been nice if the reason behind the occasion of the turning of Alexander into a vampire was revealed. Was he just someone the golden-haired lady walked into the bar and randomly picked out, or was there a particular reason, like he did something untoward, for her choice of him? Then , I am in a quandary, as there is something I cannot figure out. After Alexander rescued Eve from Sotherby in the garden and walked her home, he would not walk to the door with her because of the strong desires he was feeling, so she went in and closed the door - then Alexander decides he is going to go to her - he appears in the doorway, apparently enters - and then - all of a sudden they are in the garden under the cherry tree. Now how in the heck did they get there? I dislike when writers don't pay enough attention to what they are writing and cause scenarios such as that. Nevertheless, although I have read and enjoyed other books by Adele Clee, I will not be continuing with the Brotherhood series as I really don't do vampires.
This was a super love story telling about an unfortunate man, Alexander, who is struggling with being a vampire but who is trying desperately to not drink blood from a live person. He really is not happy with his enforced existence. When he and Evelyn meet they both sense that there is something different between them and they explore their relationship and learn to trust each other. The story is very different from what I expected to read about or listen to and I was very pleasantly surprised. It is written by Adele Clee in her normal manner, with lots of twists and turns, a great deal of romance which becomes hotter and hotter as the book progresses, with a villain and the couple also have very supportive family and friends. The narration by Kylie Stewart in the audiobook version is really good and adds to the telling of it. I am extremely happy to recommend this first story in The Brotherhood series as something that 'reads' easily and keeps one entertained and I am very keen to begin the second of the series very soon. At my request I was supplied with a free audiobook by the author and this is my voluntary and unbiased review of it.
Set in the first quarter of the 19th century, the story tells about Alexander, a recluse, and Eve, who, with her aunt, is on the way to a possible suitor when their carriage overturns. Eve seeks help from Alexander, who very unwillingly comes to the rescue. He is fascinated by the extremely unconventional young woman, but THE ACCIDENT some years earlier turned him into a monster, which is why he withdrew from society. However, when he meets Eve's suitor, he is convinced something sinister is going on, and feels compelled to rush to Eve's aid. Yeah well, on the plus side, the monster - a vampire, I assume, it was never explicitly said - did not sparkle. The plot as such was not bad at all, on the contrary, but as one of the main protagonists, Alexander came over more like a whiny weakling than what he was supposed to portray (again, I assume). Eve is a strong character, full of vitality and very strongwilled. Alexander's overdramatic mental ramblings about his fate just got on my nerves after a while. In fact, I liked his newly found friend Eliot much more - he had more "colour", more presence than the actual protagonist. Will I follow this series? Highly unlikely.
Alexander wants nothing to do with people and society for fear he can't control the monster he became after being bewitched by an evil blond who turned him into a vampire. He's lived shut away for two years now with his beloved motherly maid as his only companion. He refuses to drink human blood and only feeds on animal blood still he fears he might someday lose control. Then one night Evelyn makes her way to his door after her carriage is ever turn in a storm and her aunt is gravely injured. He tries to send her away but Evelyn is head strong and in the end he relents and helps. Alexander feels drawn to Eve and despite his rude nature she feels a long for him though she is supposed to be getting to know another man who has been recommended to her aunt as an acceptable suitor. Alexander knows there is something wrong with this man and set out to protect Eve all while falling more for one another but he knows he can't give her what she deserves (a husband and family). An excellent read with a HEA

I literally read this book in half and day and it was INCREDIBLE. I'm going through a phase of reading historical fiction and I stumbled across this on amazon (it's free on kindle by the way....) and I couldn't be more happy that I did!
I believe that it's actually an erotica but i would definitely say that it falls into the supernatural/romance category more with a couple (but not many!) added juicy bits.
What I typically hate about erotica is the shocking form of the text. There's usually terrible storytelling and no real sense of plot or if there is then that's terrible too. Clee writes BEAUTIFULLY. She creates a believeable, interesting world and the same for characters. I feel completely emotionally invested in their story and only wish that their tale would continue! I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the Brotherhood series.
4 1/2 stars! I have never read anything by Adele Clee before and I thought I’d check this book out as a free ebook....why not right, it was free. Well, now I am an avid reader and an admitted book snob who normally doesn’t stray from my pack of a select few authors. But WoW I was pleasantly surprised by this author! The characters had depth and the conflict was easy and not overly complicated. I like a little bit of pure smut in my romance novels. Ok. Ok sometimes a LOT of pure smut! (huge JR Ward, Black Dagger Brotherhood fan-need I say more?) WELL, Lost to the Night delivered for me on all aspects! It wasn’t as involved at let’s say a BDB book...but sometimes I need that. A book that’s an easy read, that captures my interest, relatable and fun characters and gives you that bit of lustiness that kicks your own marriage up a notch! I enjoyed reading this so much I think I’m going to purchase *gasp* yes, I said purchase the next book in the series to see where it takes me!
Lost To The Night is a paranormal historical romance, and book one of The Brotherhood Series.
Partly set in the Hampshire New Forest this book is about a passionate love between Eve and Alexander. He's hidden away from society for two years, a man supposed to be so disfigured after an accident that he fears to show his face. But a coaching accident has Eve on his doorstep desperate for help. She ignores his rudeness and demands shelter for herself and her aunt.
Why is she not afraid of him? And why does she make his have feelings once more?
This book delivers a mix of Regency romance and the paranormal? Does it work? Yes, although some make find there are few surprises in the narrative.
I loved this story! It captured me right from the first page and held onto me all the way to the end. I was sad to see it end.. The author wrote in such an entrancing way that I felt like I was in another place. The story reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. Rumors are aplenty about Alexander being scarred from a carriage accident and now spends his time at his estate as a recluse. Evelyn doesnt care about the rumors when she seeks help to rescue her Aunt from a carriage accident. Evelyn finds the rumors about Alexander being scarred are false, but what she doesnt know is the beast lies within Alexander, he is a vampire. Love, love, love it! Great Job Adele Clee
Vampire Regency Romance is a combination I was looking forward to read. Well, the story ended up being mostly romance in the Regency era. Yes, the hero is a vampire. However, the story takes a totally different approach than other vampire stories. The vampire drinks exclusively animal blood and has no significant powers. The romance part was predictable - from annoying each other to falling in love to being kidnapped to HEA. I did, however, enjoy the book as a light read with likable characters and will read the other books as well.
4 stars because not subject I usually read, so is only my opinion, but good story. There was romance, but different kind, with some steam. It was a little stressful for me, because could not see how their problem could be solved. Good relationship for H/h in spite of situation. Ended as well as it could. If you read this type story, I would recommend. I have always enjoyed this author's work, but enjoyed other type better. Looking forward to her other books.
Elizabethan and Alexander, for over two years Alexander has been locked away in his home label as a beast and Elizabethan is the first person who he see. She downright told him that he's rude and disrespectful but also needs to help her his her aunt is bleeding from her head. Alexander helps her aunt but ends up liking Elizabeth more than ever he follows her to try to make him her's but after she got kidnap and he found her his dark side shown so she got scared and ran. She still loves him and he loves her.
This is Alexander’s and eves story. If you like books about vampires it’s a good read, I can usually read a book a day this one took me several days just needing to put it down take a break. Most stories about vampires are the same this one differs as there is only one source one vampire that can turn anyone else into a vampire. That’s a twist I’ve never read that before. Yes titles are similar, The characters similar, the intense desire, most aspects the same, and it does and with a HEA
