Kyra Dimwater has only two weeks left before her fourteenth birthday, a day that promises misery. She has seen the noblemen coming to her home, sneaking off to the parlor with her father for hushed conversations. They were suitors, she knew, but it didn't matter. Her father had long ago decided to whom she would be betrothed. These meetings were nothing more than his pitiful attempt to increase the price for her hand in marriage. Kyra pretended not to notice them, turning instead to her book of spells that her mother had given her to practice before her inaugural year at Kuldiga Academy. She knew magic was the only way to take control of her life. Upon her birthday, Kyra's father would announce the chosen groom, and then she would have only four years at Kuldiga Academy before she would be delivered to the altar. Such was the way of noble-born girls.
When she arrives at Kuldiga Academy, Kyra's world collapses when she discovers that her betrothed works there as an instructor. As if his presence wasn't suffocating enough, rumors abound and the other apprentices soon ostracize her. There were other girls in similar circumstances, but Kyra was different. She was the only one betrothed to an instructor at the Academy. At least the others were betrothed to young men closer to their own age. She would have to use her wits, in addition to her budding magic skills, in order to escape and create some semblance of freedom in a world ruled by noblemen.
On one such adventure Kyra finds a dragon egg, something not seen for centuries in the Middle Kingdom. She knows to hide it is an offense against the crown. There is a dark danger with all dragons, and they are to be exterminated upon sight. Kyra, however, cannot bring herself to destroy it. In that oblong egg she sees not the monster others did, but a creature deserving of freedom and a life of its own making. She seeks advice from an outlawed wizard and enlists his help to care for the egg.
As the dragon hatches and grows, Kyra fights to hide and protect the fledgling dragon, all the while dodging her betrothed and the others at the academy who would surely condemn the dragon to death. The bond between lady and dragon grows fierce and strong, but will it survive, or is the dark curse destined to conquer the beast?
Sam is a very lucky guy. He juggles work in such a way that he makes sure to spend enough time with his loving wife and five sons. He is blessed to be writing full time now. In his spare time he is an avid powerlifter, and competes from time to time.
He spent nearly five years serving as a U.S. Diplomat and absolutely loved the experience, but decided to move back home. Outside of the U.S. he has lived in Latvia, Hungary, and Armenia. He speaks Russian, Hungarian, and Armenian. (He used to speak some Latvian too, but he has no one to practice with anymore…)
He has a large, happy dog. He plays the Elder Scrolls series. His favorite superhero is Wolverine, but Batman is a close second.
If the kids go to bed at a reasonable hour, he will cuddle up with his wife to watch Scrubs reruns, the Big Bang Theory, Castle, and Burn Notice.

Unreadable - from the tautology in the first paragraph you know this hasn't been near a professional editor. The proof mounts up through the first chapter with a cumbersome fight scene filled with continuity errors (a pair of monsters become three, an unconscious mage keeps hurling spells). The dialogue sounds like Borat put through Google translate. It's not comically bad, it's just bad. I stopped when I saw "manor" spelled "manner". Life is too short to waste on this rubbish. An author with no respect for the reader deserves none in return.
This has the beginnings of a fantastic story with a young sorceress and her dragon companion. The story revolves around Kyra, sent to master her magic at an academy for 4 years. Having no real friends, she finds a place to hide herself away for hours in the woods, where she discovers a dragon egg, something which is supposed to be almost extinct in their world. This is a tale of self discovery, rebellion, vengeance, magic and friendship that kept me turning the pages long after I should have put the book down and done some adulting! I'm looking forward to seeing where Kyra goes next in her training in book 2.
I thoroughly enjoyed the character development . I found the ratio of descriptive explanation and back story to plot development well balanced. I like Mr. Ferguson’s writing style and was thrilled to learn that he has 20 plus novels that are set in this wonderful fantasy planet/Universe.
Book suitable for young adults. Relationships between characters good. Mystery involving characters interesting. Look forward to reading the next book.
This was a good read, it was really slow starting out but it got going eventually. I almost stopped reading it, but I am glad I didn't. Once the story was going it kept going and held your interest til the end, just have to get through the first few chapters. I am going to read the next book and any others. I ended up loving the characters and the story line. The only reason for the 4 rating was the begining, slow and boring. The rest was a 5 star rating. I don't think you would be disappointed reading this. Great reading everyone.
Very good start on the book. Please make book 2 as this was really well developed and I want more dragon and human time together. Right when they were getting closer and the dragon was able to speak it kinda just ended a chapter after that. It was really good book am looking forward to book 2.
