This book does NOT have English explanations!
Despite it saying it is "basic level" it is probably not a good first book to learn this material. What it does really well is providing a review of the TOCFL Band A level for someone who has already learned with the majority of the material elsewhere (I recommend "A Course In Contemporary Chinese").
My only real problem with the book is that there isn't an Index and the Table of Contents could be more clear about the specific grammar items being discussed. It's not a huge problem as it's not that big of a book, but ideally it would be easier to look up a specific grammar point.
