Barbara Thorson is your new hero: A quick-witted, sharp-tongued fifth grader who isn't afraid of anything. Why would she be..? After all, she's the only girl in school who carries a Norse war hammer in her purse and kills giants for a living... At least, that's what she'll tell you - but where does the fantasy end and reality begin in the heart of this troubled girl? And what if she's telling the truth?
Brought to life with unexpected tenderness by JOE KELLY (Supergirl, Action Comics, Deadpool) and breakout talent J. M. KEN NIIMURA, I KILL GIANTS is the bittersweet story of a young girl struggling to conquer monsters both real and imagined as her carefully constructed world crumbles at the feet of giants bigger than any one child can handle.
Received at BEA Chicago!!! I'm still on the fence about whether this was good or just plain boring. On one hand this girl is a super giant nerd who plays dice games with trolls, but on the other she's a smartass who doesn't take no crap from anyone and also wears bunny ears to school. Don't make me decide.........
I was less than impressed with I KILL GIANTS. The blurb leads you to believe there’s something else going on and this is all about a troubled girl making up stories. But from reading the first issue it just seems like she’s a quirky little girl with a bitchy older sister who doesn’t feel like dealing with the world so she plays tabletop games. Maybe if there was more here I would get into it more, but I wasn’t all that endeared to any of it.
I did like the art. A little goofy, a little serious. It seems to be in line with the intent of the premise. Unfortunately the art alone isn’t going to get me through a comic. The story needs to be there too and it’s just not doing it for me. The real life “drama” seems overly dramatic for the purpose of the story but isn’t actually that dramatic. I just feel like I’m being led to think a certain way about what’s going on, but that’s not what I’m actually seeing on the page.

I received a copy of this comic from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love the main character; she's tough and funky. Her imagination runs wild, just like mine did when I was younger. It's definitely a strange, but effective coping mechanism. The story and the drawings in this graphic novel are great! ...even in only black and white, emotions and actions shine through in each panel.
What can I say? I like the Dungeons and Dragons role play aspect. I also enjoyed the main characters attitude. As for what actually happened story wise in this issue, it was just okay. Nothing much happened though.
I read this one awhile ago, I don't remember too much about it other than at the time, I couldn't stop thinking how great the illustration was, I also recall really enjoying the story line. I do however remember leaving the book some-what, confused, as-to wither the fantasy aspect of Barbara's life was portrayed to be real or just a figment of her imagination, granted I am sure this is covered in later issues but, the story didn't leave me compelled to seek out more of it.
I really enjoyed this book. For one thing the drawings where gorgeous and so unique. But the just Barbara’s story itself is so incredible. This girl is stuck in a fantasy word that she can’t seem to escape, it’s a way to escape her life. Barbara is one of the bravest characters that I have read about, she is truly strong and inspiring. Fingers crossed the movie adaptation is going to be good.
it's an interesting comic book. i don't feel exactly invested in the story yet, but it kinda reminds me a bit of how i used to act when i was younger so i'll keep reading to see where barbara's story is gonna go. also because i like the art style and i want to see how they are going to draw a giant.
Not my typical genre, I read this as my graphic novel read for the epic books challenge. Barbara seems to be the weird kid at school that no one really talks to. She says she's a giant killer, so the other kids tease her. I liked the 70's/80's references in here.
One of my favorite books is A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness...this is a graphic novel version of that story. I didn't particularly connect with the illustrations but the story was good and the ending made me weep.
i like the art style but i don't get qué se supone que tengo que sacar de esto :/ lo voy a seguir para que se me explique un poco las cosas pero bastante decepcionada, la verdad.
I feel like if A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness was reformed into a rather underwhelming graphic novel, you'd basically get this. I didn't not like this but I wanted it to be more than what it was.
