This is a story about a teenage girl whose brother is murdered. The murder goes unsolved and the girl becomes emotionally confused and soon thereafter pregnant. She leaves town to hide her condition, find her mother and research her ancestors. Once the girl leaves the farm the story skips about like a flat rock on water, hitting locations or events and finally sinking out of sight. A shelter belt is a band of trees that protect the house. Evidently Jade doesn't have one because after she finds out that she is pregnant by any number of boys or her guidance counselor, she goes bopping here and there--Massachusetts to work as an au pair and finish her GED, then Maine for the summer, and on and on she goes--meeting up with her flaky mother. There are some places where "She" is difficult to understand to whom it refers. If you like a mishmash of a book, this is the one for you.
