Some books makes you laugh.
Some books make you smile.
....
But sometimes few books makes you happy. There is a difference between all that. And Shafiq sb knows how to give you a lasting happiness. I love this book.
If you are a fan of Urdu Afsanay... This book is a must read then.

شفیق صاحب کا پہلا افسانوی مجموعہ جو کل سات مختصر افسانوں پر مشتمل ہے جو درج ذیل ہیں:
شکست،
فاسٹ باؤلر،
کرنیں،
گرمیوں کی چھٹیاں،
لیڈی ڈاکٹر،
وسعت،
ثروت
جہاں 'شکست اور فاسٹ باؤلر' میں محبت کی شوخیاں لبریز نظر آتی ہیں، وہیں 'لیڈی ڈاکٹر' اس میں مزاح کے رنگوں کو گھول دیتا ہے۔
جبکہ 'کرنیں، وسعت اور ثروت' جیسی تحریریں دل کی اتھاہ گہرائیوں میں ڈوب جاتی ہیں اور ناکام محبت کے گزرے لمحوں کو دیر تک احساس کے جذبے میں ڈھال کر قاری کو اپنے اندر سمو لیتی ہیں۔
اردو میں اس معیار کی تحریر جو محبت کے خالص اور پاکیزہ جذبات پر مشتمل ہو، صرف شفیق الرحمن صاحب کے قلم سے ہی برآمد ہو سکتی ہے۔۔۔!

Mr. Shafiq's first collection of fiction which consists of a total of seven short fictions which are as follows:
Defeat(Shikast),
Fast bowler,
Rays(Kirnein),
Summer vacation(Garmiyon ki Chuttiyan),
Lady Doctor,
Breadth(Wusa'at),
Wealth(Sarwat)
While 'Shikast/Defeat and Fast Bowler' seems to be full of love jokes, 'Lady Doctor' mixes colors of humor in it.
While writings like 'Kirnein/Rays, Wusa'at/Extension and Sarwat/Wealth' sink into the depths of the heart and absorb the reader by immersing the past moments of failed love in the spirit of feeling for a long time.
Writing of this standard in Urdu which contains pure and pure feelings of love, can only be found in the pen of Shafiqul Rehman Sahib ...!

One of the finest, heart-warming, and hilarious books I'll always have the pleasure of keeping in my library. The witty style of Shafiq-ur-Rehman works well balanced with the sweetness of Urdu that unexpectedly sends the reader into hysterical fits of laughter.
I've never read any book quite like this before. In fact, I never loved اردو افسانے this much ever. Reading this book is like going back to your parents' times and enjoying the beauty and simplicity of their old-fashioned chivalrous kind of romance. It might sound cliché but it's absolutely enjoyable.
Overall a soft, hilarious, and entertaining read.

شفیق الرحمٰن مزاحیہ اردو نثر کے سرخیلوں میں سے ہیں۔ اور یہ بات کم از کم مجھے تو یہ کتاب پڑھنے سے پہلے معلوم ہی نہ تھی کہ وہ ایک اچھے افسانہ نگار بھی تھے۔ کرنیں ان کے رومانوی افسانوں کا مجموعہ ہے۔ یہ افسانے گو کہ کم و بیش ایک ہی رنگ میں لکھے گئے ہیں لیکن قاری کو ایک ایسی خوبصورت تخیلاتی و مثالی دنیا میں لے جاتے ہیں کہ وہاں سے واپس آنے کا دل نہیں چاہتا۔
زیبِ داستاں کے لیے شفیق الرحمٰن نے ایک ایسی دنیا اور ایسا ماحول تخلیق کیا ہے کہ جس کے لیے زمان و مکان کی تعیین مشکل ہے مگر چونکہ یہ افسانے تقسیمِ ہند سے قبل کے ہیں تو اندازہ لگایا جاسکتا ہے کہ مصنف کے پیشِ نظر وہی ماحول رہا ہوگا۔ اور میری ناقص رائے میں مصنف نے تقسیم کے پہلے کے آسودہ حال گھرانوں کا ہی حال بیان کیا ہے۔

Well I have been fan of Mr. SUR from 6th grade. He dearly writes in beautiful and complex way. But thing is despite being one of my favorite writers in Urdu, this book wasn't one of the favorite. Actually humor does suits him alot but romance, in my opinion is not his genere. He makes things way too dramatic and melodramatic.
Another thing that I had notices in every short story was that he made both hero and heroin look apparently almost perfect like fairies. Ok they are just short stories but come on you are living in Asian Indian society where 99% of people are not pink and white. Then how can he make all main characters have always pink and white colours. No wonder that people of past used to prefer the white. It was no just due to mentality but due to literature. This short stories move in society hand to hand. And are very impactful. I wish he had gone the real colours of indians that is Gandhami. Plots would still be as beautiful.
He also give a noticeable effort to go through our basic society structure especially basic population and joint family system.
Thus each story was just the kind of classic Urdu literature, with hand full of characters and some what little suspenseful plot like most Urdu afsanas have. So overall writing was marvellous. Give it a shot!

میں کیا جانوں کیا جادو ہے، ان دو متوالے نینوں میں
جب نین ملے، نینوں نے کہا
نینوں نے کہا، اب نین بسیں گے نینوں میں
ہم چاندنی میں اسے پری سمجھتے جو رستہ بھول کر زمین پر رہ گئی تھی
ان کی آنکھوں میں دو ننھے موتی چمک رہے تھے
اندھیری رات میں ہم اس خواب کے متعلق سوچتے رہے
ہمارے دیکھتے دیکھتے کئی تارے ٹوٹے
ہم ٹکٹکی باندھے چاند کو تکتے رہے
تم فرشتوں کا تخیل تھیں، حوروں کا خواب تھیں
شام کے وقت اکثر ایک سایہ نظر آنے لگا جس کی ہر جنبش میں موسیقی ہوتی
رات بھر میں یہی سوچتا رہا کہ یہ نام کتنا حسین ہے
اس کے چہرے کے شفق سے چوٹیاں گلابی ہو گئیں
زندگی کا دارومدار ان خطوط پر ہے جنہیں تقدیر کا ہاتھ اندھا دھند کھینچ رہا ہے
بہت سے خطوط ایک دوسرے کے متوازی ہوتے ہیں اور ہمیشہ دور دور رہتے ہیں
دوسرے روز ایک جگمگاتی ہوئی رنگین صبح طلوع ہوئی
جب ہم اکٹھے واپس آرہے تھے تو دنیا مسکرا رہی تھی
ہم نے خوشنما جھیلیں دیکھیں
ہم نے شفق سے جگماگتے ہوئے بادل دیکھے
ہم نے درختوں کے جھنڈوں میں پرندوں کے نغمے سنے
درختوں کی اوٹ میں ہم نے چاند کو دیکھا
جن آنکھوں نے اتنی دور سے مجھ پر ایسا سحر کر دیا تھا
اگر وہ سچ مچ قریب آجاتیں تو کیا ہوتا
