Dear Author,
“This young crewman of a US Navy “Dumbo” PBY rescue mission has just jumped into the water of Rabaul Harbor to rescue a badly burned Marine pilot who was shot down while bombing the Japanese-held fortress of Rabaul. Since Japanese coastal defense guns were firing at the plane while it was in the water during take-off, this brave young man, after rescuing the pi

This is an m/m WWII historical that brings to life the unique prompt photo - a real life photo from WWII. Leon and Kip meet when Leon swims out to rescue Kip after Kip's plane goes down. Most of the story plays out over the next few days as they and the other crew members wait on a deserted island to be rescued. I enjoyed the historical backdrop to this. I also liked that the way things progressed between Leon and Kip felt very real to the times.

I'll admit I found the writing and flow

This was a beautiful, poetic, haunting tale of love in wartime. One man was a bit jaded and cautious, and another was innocent and hopeful. They stole moments together despite the danger. I'm glad of the ending.

The prompt and history for this story were fascinating, and a perfect set-up for what turned out to be a very well written short. The author remained true to the time period, using the language and references to pop-culture that dominated that point in time. The romance was light, more a portrait of two men, each measuring their steps carefully in the face of prejudice and war-time duty. There was a cast of interesting characters here and while the author made it clear that the crew were not alw ...more

What a great story! Thank You Ms. York
Great story. And very intriguing.
Some parts were not easy to understand for me. But totally worth reading.
Loved Leon and Kip. And Lucy, too! (And Mac, and Joe, and even Dickens!)
Ending was great and sweet :)
Thank you, Ms. York! ♥
Haven't had a chance to read this yet but... that cover? WOW! Absolutely stunning!

ETA: Finally read this... I wanted to LOVE this one but... something is just missing for me.
Leonard "Leon" Dobson is a US Navy sailor during World War II. He is good at his job, and he manages to hide a great secret quite well. During an allied attack on a Japanese fort, a plane is shot down, and Leon jumps into the water to save the pilot. Not quite understanding Nikifor Jelen when he says his name, Leon nicknames him "Kip" and brings him to safety. Following the battle, the crew lands on an island while they regroup and prepare for the next stage of the journey. It's during this time ...more

I simply could not finish this short story.
It was rather well written but it lacked tension and failed entirely to make me root for the characters. A pity, as the premise was quite interesting.
