Λέγομαι Όρντο Τουπίκος και γεννήθηκα στο Νορθ Φλατ του Ουαϊόμινγκ στις 9 Νοεμβρίου του 1936. Για να δημιουργήσεις ένα καινούργιο πρόσωπο, πρέπει να μισήσεις το προηγούμενο τόσο ώστε να θες να το σκοτώσεις. Η Εστέλ είχε γίνει η Ντων, και η Ντων ήταν ευτυχισμένη. Είχε αντιμετωπίσει την ξαφνική επανεμφάνισή μου αναγκάζοντάς με να αποδεχτώ την Ντων Ντεβέυν, να τοποθετήσω στη μνήμη μου το καινούργιο πρόσωπό της στη θέση της Εστέλ, ώστε ακόμα μία φορά η Εστέλ να πάψει να υπάρχει. Ήξερα τώρα την απάντηση στην ερώτηση που με έφερε εδώ.
Ο Όρντο, κελευστής στο αμερικανικό πολεμικό ναυτικό, ζει μια ζωή χωρίς περιπέτειες. Από τα νιάτα μου, μια μοναδική ανάμνηση, μισοξεχασμένη: κάποτε ερωτευμένος με μια δεκαεξάχρονη κοπέλα -τότε εκείνος ήταν είκοσι-, την έκλεψε και παντρεύτηκαν. Λίγες εβδομάδες αργότερα, η μητέρα ξαναβρήκε την κόρη της και ακύρωσε το γάμο της ανήλικης.

About the author

Donald E. Westlake (1933-2008) was one of the most prolific and talented authors of American crime fiction. He began his career in the late 1950's, churning out novels for pulp houses—often writing as many as four novels a year under various pseudonyms such as Richard Stark—but soon began publishing under his own name. His most well-known characters were John Dortmunder, an unlucky thief, and Parker, a ruthless criminal. His writing earned him three Edgar Awards: the 1968 Best Novel award for God Save the Mark; the 1990 Best Short Story award for "Too Many Crooks"; and the 1991 Best Motion Picture Screenplay award for The Grifters. In addition, Westlake also earned a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1993.

Westlake's cinematic prose and brisk dialogue made his novels attractive to Hollywood, and several motion pictures were made from his books, with stars such as Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson. Westlake wrote several screenplays himself, receiving an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of The Grifters, Jim Thompson's noir classic.

A truly unusual story by Donald.E.Westlake whose work I'm reading for the first time. An American seaman Ordo Tupikos discovers that his teenage bride whom he was forced to divorce by her conscientious mother is now a big star called Dawn Devine in Hollywood. After being ribbed by his fellow seamen and fearing that he is living a life of mediocrity, the seaman decides to pay his ex-wife a visit. To his surprise, his ex-wife takes him back in.

I thought the whole story was Westlake's commentary on how the ordinary American views himself in relation to Hollywood. Ordo, the main character is a pretty content seaman who is incited into action after he sees that his ex-wife who was pretty ordinary has changed herself into Dawn Devine, a movie star beyond recognition.

"I was shaving the next morning .....Shaving, I looked at my myself, looked at my nose and my eyes and my ears, and here I was. I was still here. The same guy. Same short haircut, same eyebrows, same chin. The same guy." - This is Ordo's internal monologue the night after his current girlfriend expects extraordinary deeds from him in bed after she learns that he was the ex-husband of a big Hollywood star.

I think Westlake is trying to say that it is perfectly OK to be ordinary. Not everyone changes himself drastically from what they were as teenagers. Another reviewer said that the whole story was non-judgemental and anyone could recreate their lives. I am not sure if I agree with this, because a co-star of Dawn Devine warns Ordo not to ask her how she changed herself so completely beyond any recognition from the ordinary teenage bride. I also felt that the voice of the first-person narrator was quite dim witted at times.

I liked how the story began. The first two pages contains details about Ordo's childhood and his somewhat rootless upbringing during World War 2 after his father's death in the war. Ordo seems to be a man for whom genealogy and ancestry are very important. He declares that he is one hundred percent American because both his parents (who have Greek, Swedish, Indian, Irish and Italian heritage) were born in America. But later his mother divorces a man who is half-black but he pretended to be white. In the 50s and 60s, Ordo is ignored by his mother and half-black step brother and he loses touch with other siblings. He also goes through his first divorce. In two pages, Westlake sort of explains what America was like in the 40s to the 50s and 60s when families were breaking up. Or atleast, that is how this Indian interpreted it.

Anyway, this was a really intriguing little story. I discovered that there is a French film based on it. I will definitely read more of Donald.E.Westlake.

Ο Ντόναλντ Γουέστλεϊκ είναι από τα μεγάλα ονόματα στην αστυνομική λογοτεχνία, γνωστός για τα βιβλία της σειράς με (αντί)ήρωα τον Πάρκερ -που έγραψε με το ψευδώνυμο Ρίτσαρντ Σταρκ-, για την κωμική αστυνομική σειρά με ήρωα τον Ντόρτμουντερ, καθώς και για πλήθος άλλων αυτοτελών αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων, κωμικών και σκληρών. Οι Έλληνες εκδότες του έχουν δώσει πολύ μικρή σημασία με βάση την ποιότητά του, μιας και μόνο πέντε βιβλία του έχουν μεταφραστεί στα ελληνικά μέχρι στιγμής. Κρίμα, γιατί είναι ένας συγγραφέας που ταιριάζει απόλυτα με τα γούστα μου.

Λοιπόν, αυτό είναι το τέταρτο βιβλίο του που διαβάζω. Πρόκειται για μια νουβέλα που δεν ανήκει στο είδος της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας, στο οποίο διέπρεψε ο συγγραφέας, μιας και η ιστορία είναι περισσότερο κοινωνική, αν και με κάπως νουάρ ατμόσφαιρα.Ο Όρντο, ναυτικός και πρωταγωνιστής της ιστορίας, αναρωτιέται κατά πόσο αλλάζει ο άνθρωπος με το πέρασμα των χρόνων (εξωτερικά και εσωτερικά), αν και αυτός παραμένει ίδιος τόσα χρόνια. Άρχισε να αναρωτιέται γι'αυτό, όταν μαθαίνει τι απέγινε εκείνη η δεκαεξάχρονη κοπέλα που "έκλεψε" και παντρεύτηκε πριν δεκαέξι χρόνια και μετά την έχασε...

Απλή ιστορία, άκρως ευκολοδιάβαστη και αρκετά ευχάριστη, χωρίς εξάρσεις ή εκπλήξεις. Η γραφή πολύ καλή, με ωραίες περιγραφές και φυσικούς διαλόγους, οι χαρακτήρες απλοί και χωρίς ιδιαίτερο βάθος, η ατμόσφαιρα κάπως νουάρ. Γενικά μου άρεσε σαν ιστορία (αν και δεν νομίζω ότι οδήγησε κάπου), αλλά δεν πιστεύω ότι θα αρέσει σε όλους. Πάντως δεν καταλαβαίνω γιατί επιλέξανε αυτό το βιβλίο για μετάφραση και όχι κάποιο από τα γνωστά του διαμάντια.

Υ.Γ. Σημερινή ψαριά από το Μοναστηράκι, με κόστος ένα ευρώ (πιστεύω ότι η κανονική του τιμή είναι τσιμπημένη).

Το γεγονός ότι ο Γουεστλέικ άρεζε στον Μανσέτ (και ότι το συγκεκριμένο μεταφράστηκε στα γαλλικά από τον Ζ.Π.Μ.) στάθηκε αρκετό για να το διαβάσω. Και δεν το μετάνιωσα.

Μπορεί ένας άνθρωπος να αλλάξει; Να αλλάξει ολοκληρωτικά, και η όψη και ο χαρακτήρας του, σε σημείο να γίνει αγνώριστος ακόμα και στους πολύ κοντινούς του; Αυτό το ερώτημα ερευνά ο Westlake σε αυτή τη νουβέλα του. Πρόκειται για το ίδιο πρόσωπο, ή κάποιος άλλος έχει "κλέψει" την ταυτότητά του; Η απάντηση που δίνει είναι αυτό που κρατάει το ενδιαφέρον μας στην ανάγνωση. Μια απάντηση όχι "σοκαριστική", αλλά μελαγχολική.

Un livre un peu étrange dans la bibliographie de Westlake : pas de burlesque ni d'ambiance noire, ici il nous présente un récit au 1er degré parfois volontairement maladroit afin de mieux retranscrire la vague impression d'inachevé de la vie du héros. La prometteuse piste de la satire d'Hollywood est malheureusement quelque peu laissée de côté. Pas inintéressant mais loin d'être indispensable par rapport à ses autres bouquins.

Όταν ξεκίνησα αυτό το βιβλίο για την κατηγορία B.R.A.CE. 2017 ένα βιβλίο συγγραφέα που έχει αρχικά στο όνομά του νόμιζα ότι ήταν ένα αστυνομικό. Καθώς περνούσαν οι σελίδες περίμενα να συμβεί κάτι και να υπάρξει ένα έγκλημα. Και υπήρξε τελικά για μένα, σε ένα διαφορετικό επίπεδο από την κυριολεξία, και ήταν ενδιαφέρον. Το κείμενο κυλάει με μια έξτρα "άνεση" σε σχέση με άλλα που έχω διαβάσει. Σίγουρα θα προσπαθήσω να διαβάσω κι άλλα του Westlake. Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ η γραφή του.
