Very creative! Mervin Malonzo is a known comic books illustrator and writer here in the Philippines. He is fast becoming one of the most popular local writers especially after winning in this year's National Book Award for Comics for his very successful graphic novel debut, the first issue of Tabi Po: Isyu 1 (2 stars).

Well, I did not like the book because of its take on the Catholic images. I liked the illustrations, however so I thought that it was just an okay read. So, when I picked up this

What made the book interesting are the endnotes and the appendices.

Now THIS is how you create a Filipino graphic novel. Ang Subersibo tells the story of the first two chapters of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere, and right on the cover, you can see the amount of love and effort given to creating it. The face profiles of Ibarra (or Rizal?) and Simoun and the beautiful gothic calligraphy would really capture one's attention, not to mention the embossed geometric embellishments.

Mervin Malonzo is the perfect illustrator for Ang Subersibo. He has proven his worth with h

Beautifully presented with embossed glossy cover and traditional ink illustrations, Ang Supersibo is a love letter by Adam David and Mervin Melonzo, not only to Rizal's famous novels, but to everyone who was forced to read Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo (which is pretty much everyone who went through high school) and was unable to fully appreciate what they are about.

Mervin Melonzo raises a very good point in his introduction: people who had to read Rizal's novels in their early teens cou

"A lot of artists attempted to do a graphic novel version of Dr. Jose Rizal's novels. But no one can surpass the quality of this version, "Ang Subersibo". Each panel brings you really back to the life during the late 1800s. Kumbaga sa pagkain, namnam mo talaga yung bawat subo mo. The art no doubt is similar to our national hero which gives more feel to the story. The story is not summarized compared to the previous versions. It is really detailed. It will be really a hard time for the writer and ...more

Dear Author,

San po ang kasunod?

Nagmamahal,
Mambabasang nabitin

UPDATE:

This is a graphic novel version of the first 2 chapters of Noli Me Tangere. I admit I am once of those people who barely understood the Rizal novels when I read them in high school, but after 20 years of reading experience (albeit mostly in English), maybe it's time to try reading them again. This comics was easy to understand and digest and I rather enjoyed reading it. I never appreciated how annoying Padre Damaso was, I only remember him as a "bad person," but reading this comics I actually ch ...more

This has got be the one of the finest adaptations of Rizal's two great novels. I think Adam David and Mervin Malonzo gave enough justice to the story in their attempt on this. Thing is, the novels were already great on their own merit. It wouldnt be recognized all over the world for no reason really. But in this book though, with less dialogues, and quite the fantastic art, compressed as it may - it does not sway away from the little details that matter. Keep in mind, this is just the first inst ...more

Naging overkill siya for me na para lan ...more

Haha, kawawa naman ako, how to delve into the question of the anarchist as leninist as seen in this book kung dalawang chapters pa lang pala ang pwede kong pagbasehan. huhuhu
