I wanted to like Rage and Redemption in Alphabet City, I actually wanted to love it, but this one just didn't live up to expectations. I was surprised since a number of my friends and other reviewers gave this collection rather high marks.

The book begins with the longer title story called, Rage and Redemption In Alphabet City. Blue Balls - most of us know what they are, but it also happens to be the name of a drink Trevor finds young Ruby consuming in a bar in the East Village. The st

I had never read anything by Amy Grech prior to receiving this collection of stories. I did a little digging first and found that she fluttered between noir and horror (two of my favourites) and had had numerous short stories in various publications such as Apex Magazine, Beaten to a Pulp: Hardboiled and the Dead Harvest anthology.

I expected a collection of short stories but I was wrong. The first tale: 'Rage and Redemption in Alphabet City' is a dark and seedy tale about sex and murder and is p

Review: RAGE AND REDEMPTION IN ALPHABET CITY by Amy Grech

A Wild and uproarious tour of the gritty underside of New York City's "Alphabet Avenues," this story is an eye-opener [and often, a stomach-churner]. Guaranteed, you won't think of the city in the same way ever again. Ms. Gresch delivers a far-out Neo-Noir depiction. Much like a highway fatality, you might find it cringeworthy but you won't be able to turn away.

I'm not really sure what this book is about. It seems to go all over the place. The other stories should have been in another book. I'm still trying to figure out why some earlier parts were included. None of the stories are compelling. There is nothing there to grab onto. I expected this book to knock me off my seat. It just didn't happen.

I'm posting this book review in a different way because what I'd normally do for a review won't work here.

I gave this one 2 cheers out of 5 because it seem

Amy Grech may be called a mystery or suspense writer if we go by the conventional use of the term but it is a label that doesn't quite make the grade. There is very little mystery in these five tales between the covers of Rage and Redemption in Alphabet City. It might be better to call her a writer of dark suspense bordering on Crime Noir. But here is the thing. Grech's fiction doesn't really fit into any buttonhole very well. Her tales are indeed dark. So dark that they inhabit a limbo between ...more
