Shelves: non-fiction
I can't recall where I heard about this book, but to no one's surprise, it hooked me from the start - cultural anthropology and women's history, a local Seattle author, published by University of Washington Press, and, of course, ICELAND. So, yeah, I'm probably the ideal reader of this particular book. I am happy to report it was every bit as excellent and interesting as I had hoped. A fascinating look at a fading industry, at least in the traditional sense of it. The book is somewhat of a memoir, and it takes a very personal approach to the subject.

The book started a bit slow for me -- it was nearly impossible to keep track of all the historical seawomen she referenced, particularly given that a solid portion of them seemed to be named Gudrun. Once it got into the 20th century, though, I found it very readable and enjoyed the pace. I was kind of surprised by this, because

what a great history lesson for the point.
i'm haunted by the wealthy few and the impoverished many; and the new wealthy few, though the standard of living is good, there's a resilience there: so here too
i think lola will be next
