Power of the Matchmaker

Broken Things to Mend

Rate this book

Celia is in desperate need of a change--a change of scenery, a change of pace, and a complete redo of all relationships. Not knowing what else to do, she opens a map, closes her eyes, and lets fate decide her future. Then she packs her meager belongings and buys a one-way ticket to a little town on the fringes of Oregon's Deschutes National Forest called Sisters. She's wanted a family for years. Will she find one in Sisters?

What Celia doesn't plan to find is a strange Chinese woman whose meddling ways keep throwing her in the path of a handsome, but reserved, forest ranger. But no matter how kind or dependable Silas seems to be, there are some things in Celia's past that neither of them can escape, and this time, the damage might be too much to mend.

***This book is part of a multi-author project that features one recurring character--the match maker--but it is a STAND-ALONE novel.***

I listened to this book on Audible and the performance was not the best. I imagine if I had read the book it would have been a better experience. Nevertheless, I did not think the story was executed well, Celia and Silas were not that likable and Aunt Nancy was VERY annoying. I kept scrunching up my face every time that woman stuck her nose where it didn't belong.

I am still planning on listening to the rest of the series though. This one just happened to be a miss for me.

A sad, sweet song, full of hope played on my heartstrings while reading this book. It's a part of the Matchmaker series, but definitely can stand alone. The story begins with Pearl, whom we met in The Matchmaker, coming to town again to bring two people together. She makes it clear that this won't be an easy match to make and we soon see why.

Celia is on the run from her past and is determined to make a new life for herself in Sisters, Oregon, by the luck of the draw. She's obviously got some secrets and is deeply broken, yet she's a fighter. She comes to town with hardly a thing to her name and is taken in by Nancy, a woman Pearl knows. Nancy hasn't ever married and plays a very pivotal role in young Celia's life. I love the relationship the two forge and the things Celia is able to learn from Nancy are heartwarming. Nancy has an orphaned nephew, Silas, who lives nearby. He had a hard upbringing too, but he's content with his life now--except for the stutter.

Typically in a story such as this, the characters are flawed, yet still seemingly perfect, and I didn't feel that with this book. These characters are real and imperfect. They have realistic struggles, but I didn't feel bogged down by them and was still able to fully escape into their story. I love the way the story flows and the events that happen are natural, with good pacing. The relationships are believable and tender. I love the way they're able to accept each other, while joking, bantering, and understanding the needs of each other without the use of words. The climax of the story is intense and I would've loved an epilogue, but I still felt satisfied. I can't stop thinking about this story and visualizing the setting and characters. I laughed, I cried, my heart soared, and my heart broke--so many emotions! I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Content: vague, non-descriptive mention of a forced encounter; mild kissing; mild religious elements; Clean for 16+.

This is an unlikely love story. The pasts of Celia and Silas are full of heart break and tragedy. Both are in desperate need of love and acceptance and the question is, can they find it with each other?

Pearl is a matchmaker. She has been around a long time and has "magic" in finding the perfect match. Her search leads her to Celia for Silas. The prospective couple are awkward and uncomfortable around each other. You wonder how this match will work. There are also devastating secrets that have the potential to keep them apart.

You can't help but love Celia. The poor girl has had a very unhappy upbringing. When you think that things can't be worse for her, they become worse. She has longed for happiness and a family to call her own since childhood. She finally finds acceptance and kindness in Sisters, Oregon, but she is afraid. She is running from a past that can catch up to her.

Silas has his own problems. He is a loner. He has hidden himself away because of his stutter. He is afraid of rejection and ridicule.

This is a couple that you want to succeed and find happiness. It is a clean romance book with some powerful messages.

I am so excited for this Matchmaker series! I thought Pearl (the Matchmaker) would be more involved with Silas and Celia getting together, but she actually just brings them together. I do wish she had been a bigger part of the actual story because I really liked her character!

Both Silas and Celia know loss and loneliness and pain and heartache. They both carry heavy burdens of sorrow. Silas has spent his life avoiding people and he starts out avoiding Celia, but finds himself wanting to take care of her and make her happy. Celia didn't know if she could ever trust another man, especially after what she's been through. Without even knowing she needs faith in men restored, Silas restores that faith through his thoughtfulness and kindness.

Ever since I read MY OWN MR. DARCY by Karey White, I've eagerly looked forward to all of her books. BROKEN THINGS TO MEND is a beautiful love story between Celia and an unlikely hero, Silas. BROKEN THINGS TO MEND is the first release of a 12-book collection that features the matchmaker, Miss Pearl, who travels around the world, through time, and matches couples who need her help in finding true love. 5 stars!

I think this is going to be a fun series. Each book can stand on it's own, but each book has the character of Pearl the matchmaker woven into the story. I just love Pearl. It's fun seeing her show up in each book and it's a fun way to connect each of the stories.

I liked this story, both Celia and Silas were nice people and had a sweet, slow romance. Both have experienced hardships and are able to find new strength through each other. Celia fled her hometown of Chicago, picking a new place to live at random, and ended up in the small town of Sisters, Oregon. With literally nothing to her name she is rescued by sweet Pearl and her life is changed forever. I liked Celia, she has had a hard life and had some walls built up. I did have a hard time connecting with her character at times. Silas was different than most of the guys I read about. I liked him, he was a good man. He is extremely self-conscience and pretty shy because of a stutter he developed when he lost his parents as a child. I liked that he slowly became more comfortable around Celia and was willing to take a chance on her.

I was a little nervous for this one, I had read a couple other reviews and knew some of the subject matter was dealing with rape. Not something I normally like to read about, but sometimes it's nice to step out of my usual reading comfort zone. Luckily, I thought it was handled well in the book and was never too heavy or depressing.

Overall, I thought this was a nice read. I enjoyed the setting and characters. I thought the end wrapped things up a little too quickly. I liked it though and thought it was a good start to the series.

Broken Things to Mend is the first installment of a twelve book collection of the Power of the Matchmaker series.

Excited to read the first book of the series. Even though I was hoping Pearl would be a larger part of the narrative, she did play a vital part despite her brief appearance. Pearl is fascinating and a powerful force I can't get enough of.

Silas and Celia have been dealt challenging hands in life. Both suffering excruciating heartache, loss beyond belief. Dealing with their sorrow they carry their history silently - Silas is a loner, Celia has trust issues given what she has survived. Needless to say with Pearl's gentle nudge you find yourself cheering for these two deserving souls to unite. Slowly the pair shares their pain and begin to heal and strengthen together.

Lovely story with powerful messages. I enjoyed both the narrative and characters equally. Invigorating story of kindness, healing, love much more.

This book wasn't what I was expecting. It's the first book in the Power of the Matchmaker 12 book series, but is a stand alone novel. For some reason I thought it would be a fun, fluff read, with Pearl, the sweet, little matchmaker from Power of the Matchmaker making an appearance. But it wasn't a fluff read at all. It has some very serious subject matter. And it was really, really good. It hit a ton of different emotions. I laughed and cried and sympathized and hoped. Silas and Celia, bless their hearts, have both had really tough childhoods, both experiencing a lot more than their fair share of tragedy. This book is about taking that past heartache and helping each other heal.

This heartwarming story is set in the town of Sisters, Oregon–a place I promise you’ll want to visit yourself after reading. Rugged firefighter Silas Toller is a worthy, if reluctant, hero when it comes to rescuing Celia, who is suffering under the weight of some of the worst heartaches imaginable.

I adored everything about this story. I loved the small town feel and the way Celia’s background and story unfolded. I love that not everything worked out perfectly for the characters–even at the very end. I appreciated the moments of joy each experienced and felt like their sorrows were very true to life. And best of all, the ending was full of promise and hope–exactly what a romance novel should be. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves happily ever afters and appreciates seeing the struggles and reality along the way. Five Stars.

This is the beginning of a series I am really, really looking forward to. And what a great beginning it is! This is the first book in the Power of the Matchmaker series. Every book in this series is by a different author and each book can stand alone but each has a common character and a common theme. The prequel novella to this series is called Power of the Matchmaker and that is the only book I would suggest before starting this series. It introduces you to a Chinese matchmaker who will play a role in every book to come.

Karey White is a talented writer and I have enjoyed reading her books. She starts things off just right with this book, Broken Things to Mend.

My heart took to both Celia and Silas right away. They were broken but strong and I loved them both. My heart was invested in them individually and together. Their stories were personable and felt real to me. All the best of elements to have in a book. As a reader, I'm always looking for real connections to characters and stories.

I read through this book quickly and in the end let out a big sigh of satisfaction and relief. It made my heart happy. I cannot wait to see what is coming next in this series! One of my all time favorites (Rachael Anderson!!) is up next month. Woot! This is going to be a fun year for reviewing!

Content: some talk of rape and abuse, drug addiction, but not in great detail.

Celia is living in Chicago and going through some rough times. She needs a change of pace so she packs up and heads to Sisters, Oregon. Pearl, the matchmaker, is hanging out in Sisters with Silas, a forest ranger, working to get the two together. Silas was orphaned and raised by his Aunt Nancy, who takes Celia in when she needs somewhere to stay.

Celia and Silas are both broken. There are real issues that each of them are working through that have had an impact on their lives. At first, they weren't interested in each other romantically at all and I wondered how Pearl was going to be successful in this story. The romance was gradual and sweet. But Celia is keeping a secret that can change everything. I wasn't sure how this would end and I couldn't read it fast enough. I was a little surprised that Pearl wasn't in the story very much, but she definitely played an important role.

This is a clean romance but there is talk of rape so I would recommend it to older readers. Even though this is part of the matchmaker series, it works well as a standalone novel. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

I received a copy of this book via I Am a Reader for an honest review. My opinion is 100% my own.

I absolutely loved this story of a gentle romance between two lonely and hurting people. It is well paced, with plenty of room to soak in the characters without feeling slow. The details of the lives of Celia and Silas prevent the plot from seeming cliché. The setting of a small town in Oregon made me want to take a road trip to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I loved Silas' Aunt Nancy, with her giant garden, quilting, and open hospitality. Even though the serious topic of rape is a part of the story, it never felt dark or hopeless. Rather, it was a hope-filled journey of healing and connection. The matchmaker Pearl only made an appearance at the beginning of the story and the end, which I liked since she didn't distract from the relationship between Silas and Celia developing naturally. I'm looking forward to reading more by the author and the next book in the Power of the Matchmaker line.

Read it in one sitting

I am home in quarantine for a few days after a radiation treatment and was thrilled to find a new Karey White book had popped up on my Kindle this morning. I must have pre-ordered it. I have read and loved every one of her books. This was a wonderful way to spend New Years Day. As always the characters were real and well developed. They are people I would love to know. But Karey's stories are also compelling and this one was exceptional. It especially resonated with me as I am the mother of two adopted children. I have always been in awe of the kind of unselfish love it takes to relinquish a child so that it can have a better life than you are able to provide. Karey did an excellent job of conveying just how difficult and heart-wrenching it is. I LOVED this book. Will recommend it to friends.

This book was tender and emotional. Two broken, yet brave people, are facing loneliness, loss, and just trying to get by. Celia is fleeing a painful past and with nowhere to go, she opens a map and when a stray tear falls on Sisters, Oregon, that's where she decides to try to start over. She doesn't quite make it to her destination, however, and watches her bus leave without her, but a Chinese woman steps in to help. (Our Chinese matchmaker, Pearl, is such a fun character. I loved her interactions in the story.) Celia is drawn to her, but afraid to make any connections with anyone after what she's already been through. Coming to Sisters, though, changes her in a way that is all at once wonderful and scary at the same time. Pearl, her Chinese guardian angel introduces her to Silas, a forest ranger that doesn't seem to be able to meet her eyes and doesn't stick around much whenever he meets up with her. Celia doesn't know what to make of him at first, but his quiet steadiness pulls at something in her and she starts to want to see more of who he really is.

Silas is the tall silent type. He's dealt with loss in his life, but his stutter compounds that so he puts up walls around himself so he doesn't have to deal with mocking and pity. He is wary of Celia at first, but when he sees how vulnerable she is, it draws all his protective instincts out. He begins to get past his unease and embarrassment about his stutter and thinks more of her and how to get to know her better. Their relationship builds into something more and it was so sigh-worthy sweet. Everything is going along well until her secrets trickle out and the reader just knows no one will ever be the same after that.

This book will draw on every emotion you have as a reader. You can't help but feel for Celia and all she's been through and want to root for her to have a happy ending. But she's facing a lot of painful decisions with no right answers. Silas is such a strong hero, but even he isn't sure how to best help her. I was up so late turning pages just to see how the book would end for them. The ending wasn't what I expected, but was good and solid and left me with a smile as I closed the book. This author has really outdone herself in giving the reader three dimensional characters and a setting that is beautiful and adds to the story, but it's the emotional decisions, right and wrong, that make this a standout. I highly recommend this one.

It's very rare that you read a novel where both main characters are so incredibly vulnerable. In Broken Things to Mend both Celia and Silas are broken in some way from tragic things in their past.

The beautiful Pearl, The Matchmaker, brings them together and then let's them get to know each other. Pearl only has a small part in the novel, but she is still one of my favorite characters.

Celia, a runaway, has had a hard life and then finds out the consequences of what an act of brutality has done to her. Silas lost his parents as a child and also lost his confidence, as he became a loner with a stuttering problem. Both Celia and Silas have a hard time trusting each other at first, but after many months they can't help but feel the attraction that is pulling them together. After things are revealed from Celia's past, Silas has a hard time dealing with them.
Celia has to make a very important decision in her life and is very confused. This part of the book made me have such mixed emotions.

The ending of the book could have gone in different directions. The end also felt a little rushed when the two main characters make a decision. If I had been Celia, I truly can say I'm not sure what I would have done. As a reader you get so emotionally involved, and depending on your own experiences, you hope for Celia to make certain choices. I know that this may seem very confusing, but I do hate to give things away in a review. Let's just say, this book will have your emotions bouncing all over the place. This book is a fast read and I kept reading every spare second I had. Broken Things to Mend is a beautiful first book in The Power of the Matchmaker series. It is a story showcasing redemption, acceptance, and love.

This is the first novel in the Matchmaker series. These stand-alone stories will come out each month in 2016 all revolving around a Chinese Matchmaker named Pearl. In this story, Celia and Silas take center stage. They are very quiet characters who probably would never have met or even spoken to each other had Pearl not taken advantage of her magical intuition and throw them together. Still, Celia carries secrets she’s unwilling to share, and Silas has a stutter that keeps him from wanting to carry on conversations with others, especially pretty strangers like Celia. I’ve loved other books by Karey White, so I was excited for this one, especially since I read the prequel to this series and have been super excited to see what the participating authors would do. This didn’t disappoint. It was slower than I expected (probably due to the shy nature of the characters), yet it tugged at my heart and it wasn’t slow in the sense that I wanted to stop reading. No way! It had captures me. It just didn’t take me for a wild stallion ride like some books. It took me for a nice trot instead, with good characters and dialogue that kept an even, steady pace. Emotions nourished the soil, and hard challenges made the characters bloom as they struggled to grow and thrust out roots of bravery and courage. I would definitely recommend this one; I believe this series has the potential to be one of my favorites ever.

Once I picked up Broken Thing To Mend, I was gone a quickly absorbed in the story, from the first to the last page this one was a page-turner for me.
We all think we have it bad, but Celia has had a very rough time in her short life so far. We hear her early story, and you will have tears in your eyes thinking about how awful it was for her, and then the ultimate violation makes her scramble out of Chicago.
While this book is part of the Matchmaker series, it can stand alone, but so far I’m really enjoying this series. Pearl was instrumental in putting Silas’s parents together, and now she is behind the scenes in arranging a meeting between Celia and Silas.
When things finally work out for them to meet you begin to wonder if Pearls plans are going to work, they don’t seem to like one another. There is another secret that is hanging between them, and again you will feel so bad for Celia.
Story is set in the Sisters Oregon area and we shared the beauty of this place as the backdrop of most of this book. You won’t be disappointed with this one, but keep the tissues handy. We hope for the best and acceptance from all, but we never know until the very end how this one is turns out!

BROKEN THINGS TO MEND really broke my heart. Celia has had a rough life and she had some really tough decisions to make. She has no friends and no one she can talk to. One day, she meets Pearl, the matchmaker, but Celia doesn't know that. Pearl has guided Silas into Celia's path as they are both struggling with their lives. At first Silas seems annoyed that Celia is there but over time he decides to become her friend and get to know her better.

Celia and Silas share the pain of loneliness and heartache but at first, they keep these feelings buried from each other. Celia has a big secret and when Silas thinks he learns what it is he disappears and leaves Celia heart broken once again. Will she ever be able to tell Silas the truth? Can they over come their pasts and have a future together?

I really enjoyed BROKEN THINGS TO MEND. It is part of The Matchmakers series which is a twelve book series all written by various authors. Miss Pearl is the matchmaker and she travels around the world matching one couple at a time that have no idea how to find their true love. I'm so excited to read more of this series. Karey White did a wonderful job with this story and she hooked me and pulled me in from the very first page. I'm excited to continue this series as well as find more of Karey White's books and get them read.

Beautiful written story full of heartbreak and triumph. I loved Pearl. I know she is not the main focus the story, but I'm so thrilled she will be in the other books. Her kindness and love for people shine through. She leapt off the page. Celia and Silas were amazing characters. Celia's life was full of tragedy. I loved how she was able to find a happy place to be in. I also appreciated how the author took care in telling her story. Not all of her secrets were told all at once. Silas was great too and Nancy. I enjoyed how the story was told from both Celia's and Silas's points of view, even Nancy's at times. It really helped me get to know each character better. I loved the ending and the decision that were made. I'm so excited for more books in this series.

I was excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint. I loved it. Celia, Silas, and Nancy were characters with depth. They had strengths and well as flaws. I was impressed by Celia's courage. I felt the book had a hopeful feel despite the more difficult topics it dealt with. The prologue and epilogue nicely enfold the story. The story weaved in and out of different viewpoints. This was distracting at first, but I got used to it. This story is full of lots of wonderful things. I especially liked the quilting and gardening elements. I loved this story. It felt real to me. I look forward to reading the other books in this series, as well as the next book by Karey White.

Life can be a rough ride and this first novel in the Power of the Matchmaker series embraces that fact. Broken Things to Mend steps into tough subjects with both feet and doesn't flinch, which is refreshing, and reminds us that happy endings can begin in the most unlikely ways.

One thing I really loved about this book is how it dealt with addressing regrets and fear. It's always nice when people in books behave like people in life when it comes to processing parts of life that leave us a bit wrecked. This story does that well. It's a good, thoughtful read that definitely has talking points you can discuss afterward about how similar situations can be handled in real life.

Broken Things to Mend is a quiet and heartfelt story. I felt for Celia and her heart wrenching decision. In the end, I love what she chose to do. I wasn't sure how everything would work out and as the end neared, I felt nervous. But, it wrapped up beautifully. A perfect HEA for two lovely characters. A truly beautiful read. This book is the perfect beginning to the Power of the Matchmaker series.

I had no idea what this book was about when I started reading it. It was for a book club and I’m glad I was introduced to this series. As for this book I was definitely intrigued with the magical matchmaking Pearl. What a fun twist to start with. The characters were pretty likable and real. So why only 3 stars? I was so disappointed with the portrayal of prospective adoptive parents. I really liked the book up until that point and the ending. I feel it’s pretty clear the author has had no real life experience in this area.

This book was a sweet entertaining romance. We have two people who are self conscience. One due to a stutter and this has left him feeling isolated and alone. Silas had his stutter come when his parents died. It has eased up but he is still self conscious when it comes to it and Celia makes him nervous. He doesn’t know what to do. He likes her but is scared. He remembers what Pearl told him and goes for it. This leads us to a very sweet endearing wooing. That’s right wooing. Silas’s aunt does some meddling and fractures the tender relationship that began but Silas is determined to get it back. We see him slowly win her trust and it is so precious.

Each character is sweet and fun. Celia has been through so much and is such a strong girl even though she is scared inside. Your heart will go out to her for everything she has been through. Meeting Pearl was a turning point for her. Peal is a hoot. I love this little matchmaking fiend. She is kind and honest. Nancy is a good soul. she takes in Celia and treats her like her own. Just like she did for Silas after his parents died. She does do some unwarranted meddling that hurts both Silas and Celia but it was out of love and trying to protect her nephew. Overall she is a good person and very encouraging for both Silas and Celia. My favorite of all the characters is SIlas. I know that Celia has been through alot but Silas just captured me from the start. He is so introverted and such a nice guy. He is there for his aunt when needed. He takes care of her and loves her so much. He struggles with his stutter but it doesn’t bring him down. He works hard and is respectful of others. When he falls for Celia you see him gain a confidence and grow stronger within himself. His dogged determination at the end to gain Celia’s trust and love again is wonderful to see.

The story is well written, sweet, endearing and entertaining. A romance that is slow in building and pleasant with no drama. We have two people scared to let someone in slowly open up. One makes a mistake and the other closes down. Once the mistake is seen and love triumphs for that person they are determined to right the wrong. Watching the interactions is endearing. Silas is the perfect gentlemen and respects Celia and her feelings even though he wants her back. He doesn’t give up and is rewarded in the end.

A endearing and entertaining book about overcoming your past, your struggles and your fears to find a wonderful love that endures.
