The Wharf by the Docks

Everybody knows Canterbury, with its Old-World charms and its ostentatious air of being content to be rather behind the times, of looking down upon the hurrying Americans who dash through its cathedral and take snap-shots at its slums, and at all those busy moderns who cannot afford to take life at its own jog-trot pace.

My May Literary Birthday Challenge selection, this is the first title I've read by Florence Warden, but it won't be the last.

This was a mystery/romance, but although the mystery surrounds Dudley, the romance swirls around Max, the brother of Dudley's girlfriend. At her request, Max spends most of the story getting into trouble while trying to figure out what is going on with his friend Dudley, who has been acting strangely lately.

I predicted a couple of details correctly, and guessed at another, but didn't see the actual explanation coming. It was certainly a tidy way to explain everything, but also made sense, so I was satisfied. I don't read many mysteries, so another reader might have sorted everything out right away, but it would still be an entertaining story if that happened, because you would get to see everyone else guessing at and eventually learning the truth.

I did not appreciate the anti-Jewish comments that popped up a few times, but the book was written in 1896 and as I've said before, the older the books you read, the more chance you have of coming across such things.
