I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. You do not need to read the other Hart books to understand this book, but the other books are great reads.
I really connected with this book and its characters more though. Both main characters have gone through extremely painful situations. The book opens with a breath stealing incident that hooks you in and won’t let you go. This is how we are introduced to Jules. My heart went out to her. I don’t know what I would have done in her situation. I liked her character and strength that she exuded, despite her fragility. Kade was introduced briefly in the other books and I truly enjoyed learning more about him. He is my favorite of the Hart brothers. Maybe it is because of his transparency, his willingness to help others, or his fight to stay clean. The struggles of the characters were too much at times (especially some of the dreams/flashbacks which give insight to the past). I found my heart pounding with anticipation and I yelled out a few times too. There is no lack of STEAM in this story either. The Harts don’t lack in this area.
This book kept me guessing, especially when it came to The Seven! You are given just enough info to string you along like a hungry puppy. I rather liked the option to choose the ending (that was a nice touch, by the way, though I read both). As much as I want to go into details, I don’t want to spoil anything. You will not be disappointed with this story. Hargrove continues to deliver great stories and fresh new ideas and has easily become one of my favorite authors. She does not disappoint. She has an amazing gift of creating new worlds and then through words, transporting you, the reader, into that world (and giving you a front row seat to watch it all go down)! My favorite series has been Guardians of Vesturon (and its spinoff series Dark Waltz), but I can’t wait for this new spinoff series! It may very well become my new fav.
