REVIEW: SECOND SIGHT is the fourth installment in Carly Fall’s contemporary, adult Supernatural Renegades paranormal romance series focusing on a team of former marines whose last secret mission to Guatemala left each member of the platoon with a supernatural power. This is Marine and former assassin Zachary Johnson, and the beautiful but scarred Ella Frolic’s storyline. SECOND SIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.
Told from third person point of view SECOND SIGHT follows the building relationship between Zach and Ella. Blinded by the explosion in Guatemala, that left Zach with the ability to ‘see’ the future, our hero is temporarily housed with Ella Frolic, Joe Smith’s ex lover and a former government agent whose personality is less than welcoming. What ensues is the slow break down of Ella’s acerbic character, and a betrayal against Zach that he never saw coming.
The storyline reveals the background and history between Ella and Joe Smith, and the events that precipitated Joe’s injuries. Joe is the ‘mystery man’ who is attempting to locate all of the former Marines who were exposed to the covert experiment in Guatemala, in the hopes of taking down the government’s secret Group Nine. Group Nine has been on a search and destroy mission to locate all of the former Marines affected by the experiment, and in doing so, has placed every man in Joe’s sights. Joe will make each former Marine an offer he shouldn’t refuse.
The relationship between Ella and Zach begins acrimoniously as Ella wants nothing to do with Joe Smith or the men involved with Joe’s need for revenge. Ella’s current work for Joe finds her hunting for a backdoor into the Group Nine computers, wherein she puts into motion a plan of her own. Ella’s personality and emotional outbursts leaves much to be desired, and in this, she is a difficult character to like especially when she sets up the man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are provocative, passionate and intimate, without the over the top erotic features.
The secondary and supporting characters include another former Marine –Ruben-whose own special abilities are not under control. Joe’s aide and chauffeur Thomas is a series regular but I have the feeling Thomas is much more than Joe’s personal lackey. The introduction of Savannah makes for some sweet and enjoyable moments. And of course, Garrett, the team’s only shifter, plays a small role (if only by way of mention) as the timeline overlaps between SECOND SIGHT and book number three THE WAY YOU ARE.
The world building continues to focus on the search for the Marines –some are missing, some have been located, while others could very well be dead if the Group Nine has uncovered the location before Joe and his men.
Carly Fall continues to capture my attention with her enjoyable storylines and engaging characters. The slow reveal of Joe Smith and his purpose, in the grand scheme of things, will intrigue and keep the reader in suspense. There are moments of revelation, heartbreak, betrayal and revenge, all wrapped up in a story of romance and suspense.
I bought this book late last evening and read all the way to 97%, until, at 3:35am when I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.
I absolutely loved Zach but Ella took some time getting used to. Boy, she was sooo mean when Zach got to her house with Joe. I could see her having been mad at Joe when “it” first happened but, good grief, 7 years had passed and she still dwelled on it? That’s holding a grudge for a long time. And what she did to try and hurt Joe was kind of unforgivable. I wasn’t crazy about her after she did “that.”
However, with Zach, Savannah, Joe and Thomas in the story I could forget about her most of the time.
Again, there was no sexual tension in this book but Zach said a couple of things to Ella that were really super sexy, but that was all, and there was explicit sex, which could have been better with some tension involved, something that led up to it.
This started out with Zach being an assassin and I loved that he killed the man he did. BUT I was totally surprised by who had hired Zach. The people in this story all deserved killing, IMO.
There was swearing. The F-bomb was used 30 times.
As to the narrator: He was pretty good. He did whisper and laugh when the book called for it but he seemed to whisper during the entire book. His male and female voices were just OK for me. There wasn’t any emotion in his reading.
I think this maybe my favorite book in the series. I liked finding more about Joe Smith's reason for helping the members of the marine platoon who were involved in the explosion in Guatemala. We briefly met Zach Johnson in the last book. Joe has interviewed Zach and is ready to move forward but due to circumstances he has to leave to take care of other matters so he is forced to leave Zach with Ella Frolic. Both Zach and Ella have some problems they need to deal with. Zach's is his blindness and the strange phenomenon he has been left with after the explosion. Ella's is the past, when she was Joe's lover. I felt for both Zach & Ella for the circumstances they find themselves in. Just maybe as they work to take down Group Nine they can find a way to heal. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I enjoyed this book, 'Second Sight', although not quite as much as the first one in the series, 'By Sea'. I liked the female main character, Ella, but I thought the male main, Zachary, was a little aloof and stiff - definitely didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. The plot and story line were well written. The continuing story of the soldiers injured in a dark government experiment/explosion, leaving them each with a different paranormal ability, is a great precept and I was glad to find "Joe" tying this story to the first. Would love to see the characters from 'By Sea' have a connection in this book.en and easy to follow. Zachary is not the usual hero, more of a bad boy, anti-hero with many good qualities.
Second Sight is the last book in this series (but hopefully more of the men that were a part of their group is found). Just an FYI this book really isn’t 12 pages. Zachary has an awesome power but it came with the consequence of his complete sight… other than when he looks in a mirror and has visions of the future (he can’t say exactly when that future will be though). Zachary will put up with a lot of bs but someone disrespecting his dog is going to far.
This one fell in the couldn't put it down category. I was iffy on Zach in the last book, but my feelings definitely turned around. I too fell in love with his arrogance.
