This is a beautiful book and a good read. The Osprey 2005 edition is spacious and filled with color maps, color photos, and color illustrations of warriors by Angus McBride and Richard Hook. It even has one of those ribbon thingeys bound permanently to it, intended to be used as a bookmark.

It is divided into four main periods from 735 BC to 500 AD. While it covers the development of Rome and its military, it is Rome's adversaries and their armies which is the focus of the book. From the

For awhile I’ve been reading a few books on the Roman’s, while doing this I’ve been painting some 28mm Romans (early Imperials for those that are interested). To expand my knowledge on the Romans and their enemies I thought this one might give me a good summary of the eras and the people.
