Rate this book
The first exclusively equine medical encyclopaedia, this exhaustive book lists hundreds of equine medical and surgical terms relevant to those concerned with horse health, both the US and the UK. It is an attempt to summarize much of the vast and diverse skills and knowledge that are needed to be competent in the field of equine veterinary science. Its 500+ pages are packed with entries that provide enough detail to give the reader an understanding of many of the basic diseases, pathogens, and therapies that are available to those who endeavour to heal the horse. Compiled by well-respected equine veterinarians and listing medical terms from abasia to habronemiasis, and from thymus to zygomycosis, this is an essential reference book for all veterinary and equine studies students, as well as horse owners.

This has taken me ages to read - not because I found it boring, but rather because the style is a bit old fashioned and takes some concentration. The book was first published in 1959, which is probably one of the newer books in this series. The author goes through the schooling and training of horses right from first principles up to competing at Olympic level venues - a bit out of my league I think! Still, a lot of the advise is still sound, although we tend to word things in different ways these days. There are also some practices described that are really not considered ok - the section on rapping horses legs over jumps I missed out completely. Still, an interesting read and I picked up some tips too.
