It’s warm and cozy inside the house as the Svensson family prepares for Lucia Day, the Swedish feast day celebrated on December 13th. Mom, with help from the kids, bakes the traditional pepparkakor (gingersnap cookies) and Lussekatter (saffron buns). Dad helps get the costumes ready for the morning while mom prepares the crown. Lucia Morning in Sweden is a children's picture book written by Ewa Rydaker and illustrated by Carina Stahlberg. It follows a trio of children as they get ready for Sankta Lucia. Since today (13 December) is Sankta Lucia, I thought it would be apropos to read this book today.

This was a nice story to learn a bit more about St. Lucia day. My kids enjoyed it, and I liked how it included recipes and a pattern to make a Lucia gown. The prose could have been better, more history incorporated into it rather than just being the story of one family on St. Lucia day, but overall my kids liked it better than the non-fiction St. Lucia book I got too.
