Barney Saltzberg is the author and illustrator of close to 50 books for children, including Beautiful Oops!, Arlo Needs Glasses, Good Egg, Cornelius P. This was one of my very first favourites. I was around six months and I would already love this book. Unfortunatelly I was too rough with it and after a few months I ended up ripping the Cat page. I was devastaded but I continued reading until I was a couple of months passed 1 year old.

This is a creative lift-the-flap AND touch-and-feel book that has animals (kitten, puppy, lamb, duckling, mouse) covering their faces with their paws on outer pages and when the page flap is lifted, they say peek-a-boo and have a tummy to rub. Elliot’s favorite is the mouse with its squeaky tummy! We checked this out from the library when he was 12 months old

I’m not sure how to rate this book as my 9 month old absolutely loves it and we love reading it to him but when he wants to read it on his own he just tears it and chews the pages . Do you make this book in another material for younger readers who can’t yet turn pages or look at the book without tearing it ?

I would never have picked this book out for my daughter. Thankfully, my amazing sister-in-law sent it to us as a present. While the adult appeal may be small (until you witness a small child reading it), it is a really wonderful and amazingly interactive book for toddlers. The concept is simple - a peekaboo book with flaps hiding animals. When you open the flaps, you can see different animals with soft (or, in the case of the mouse) squeaky bellies, and the last peekaboo page is a mirror. I especially appreciate this book because it works so well for active toddlers who may not always want to sit still and read.

We now need a new copy of this one because after reading it and pulling at the pages for so long, we've nearly trashed our copy, but the enjoyment Dot's received from this little book is well worth the cost of two books.

Summary: This book plays peek-a-boo with the child. Each page is a folded page. When you first look at the page, it is an animal hiding behind its hands or legs or something. Then you fold open the page and the animal pop out, and have a texture for the child to feel. Then the last page has a mirror for the children to play peek-a-boo with themselves or to see themselves in a mirror.
Personal Reaction: I think this is a good book for the child to work on turning pages, and opening the pages. It is a cute book and easy for the child to look at the book by themselves.

Super simple, but utterly adorable for the little ones. If I can ever find a simple enough peek-a-boo craft, I am totally using this in storytime! As it is, though, I have to stick with reading it to a child snuggled in my lap. And that's okay, too.
