Apocalypse Culture #2

Apocalypse Culture II

Rate this book
When it was published in 1987, Apocalypse Culture was the first of its kind. No other book examined such disturbing cultural extremes, and no other book looked at the dark sides of society within the framework of the apocalypse. In the intervening 12 years, it has become clear that Apocalypse Culture inspired a new genre of cultural commentary that has been embraced by both independent and large mainstream publishers and eagerly sought after by the culture at large. Among its fans is X-Files creator Chris Carter.

Now Adam Parfrey offers a follow-up to that first book. Apocalypse Culture II is an entirely new collection of essays that reflect the most recent revelations of the New World Order. Through the extremes of postmodern culture it details the moral disintegration of the old world. Essays cover biological warfare, taboo art, sexual fetishism, mind control for corporate gain, government sex-slavery, creepy superstars, and more.

Adam Parfrey was an American journalist, editor, and the publisher of Feral House books, whose work in all three capacities frequently centered on unusual, extreme, or "forbidden" areas of knowledge. A 2010 Seattle Weekly profile stated that "what Parfrey does is publish books that explore the marginal aspects of culture. And in many cases—at least back when his interests were almost exclusively transgressive—he sheds light on subjects that society prefers to leave unexplored, carving a niche catering to those of us with an unseemly obsession with life's darkest, most depraved sides."

-Madre mía, cómo está el personal.-

Género. Ensayo.

A book of harsh stuff for "edgy" people. Mildly amusing.

When attempting review this book, I find myself a bit perplexed. On one hand, I find so many of the essays, and so many of the authors and subjects of these works, to be totally aborrhant. I am disgusted by them. But maybe that's the point? For as dark and sick and twisted as this book may be, I will always adamantly stand up for its right to exist. Oh, and Crispin Glover is a personal hero of mine, so that doesn't hurt.

This book is totally exploitative and vulgar, under the guise of just exercising the right to free speech. However, I tend to be drawn to macabre things every now and then (to read about, not to participate in) like serial killers, satanists, evangelical endtimers, and the like, so I did find some of the entries pretty fascinating, particularly the Japanese cannibal.

A better read than the first volume, perhaps because it feels fresher. There are more than ten years between ACI and ACII, and some of the zine-style rawness has been replaced by slicker editorial production (literally: there's a four-color glossy section in the middle). Historic look-back essays are far better written than those in ACI.

Perhaps because we made it to the turn of the millennium, there's also less dystopian worry about the future and more embracing of the weird and wild. Some is even mildly comical.

A fascinating book if you're okay with child abuse, cannibalism, serial killers, satanism and other interesting topics.
Still a bit of a letdown compared to the first tome...
