In 1892 Amarillo, Charlie Turlock is an aging Texas Ranger persecuted by a dark secret past. He's not only been battling outlaws in Texas, but his own personal demons his entire life. Before he leaves the Rangers, there is one last conflict with a cattle baron that needs to be settled. But a mysterious visitor brings more pressing issues and "ghosts" from Charlie's past that could affect the future.
First off let me say this was a great first book by Mr. Gates! I say first because I expect more novels from him in the future. As a time travel story goes, this one had a unique spin and an interesting premise. The lore surrounding this particular brand of time travel/teleportation was intriguing. I haven't come across its like before.
I like that this story evokes both a moral outrage for injustice and at the same time renews your faith in mankind's goodness. I don't want to give anything away, but this story has strong characters brought to life by authentic prose and a believable world. Personally I wanted more from the future but who doesn't?
Great story with a driving plot line and good suspense. After the halfway point the momentum continued to build. This book was excellent and I recommend it!
