アイシールド21 [Eyeshield 21] #21

Eyeshield 21, Vol. 21: They Were 11!!

Rate this book
Sena Kobayakawa is about to start his first year of high school and he’s vowed not to get picked on anymore. Unfortunately, the sadistic captain of the football team already has his eye on Sena and his lightning-fast speed. Bone-crushing action, slapstick comedy and a heartwarming coming-of-age story!

It's the Kanto Tournament-Devil Bats vs. Shinryuji Nagas-and the Bats are getting steamrolled! In fact, it's so bad that their star quarterback has pretty much thrown in the towel. He tells them that their chance of winning is less than one percent and not to play hard so they won't be injured and jeopardize their next season. But they know exactly what he means--abandon all fear! Kill yourself if need be, because there's no chance of winning unless this team can pull out more than they ever have! The question is will it be enough?

Eyeshield 21: They Were 11!! continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (179–187) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon continues the first round of the Kanto Tournament with Daimon Devil Bats and Shinryuji Naga. As the last tankōbon closes with Yoichi Hiruma, seemingly giving up, it was, in fact, a ploy to surprise Shinryuji Naga, so he did not tell anyone his plan, except for Musashi and Mamori.

Yoichi Hirumabelieved his teammates would notice and Musashi does an onside kick that is caught by Daikichi Komusubi. Because of his lack of stamina, Manabu Yukimitsu is only allowed to enter now. He is underestimated by Agon Kongo and Ikkyuy Hosokawa and ends up unmarked, so he is able to score a touchdown because of his capacity of analysing the opponents' movements and the best route option.

As the Devil Bats cannot let Shinryuji Naga to score anymore to win, Sena Kobayakawa tries to blitz Agon Kongo in every play. While he fails twice, he is able to intercept a pass when Agon Kongo is not the runner but the receiver. Amidst confusion, Kazuki Jumonji takes the ball and when Agon Kongo grabs him in front of the goal line, he is dragged across the line to scores a touchdown.

The tankōbon closes with a score of 35–14 – a twenty-one point lead for Shinryuji Naga, which seems insurmountable, but the Devil Bats are not giving up.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked how the story is progressing. The Shinryuji Naga seemed like an insurmountable force, but given that they won this tournament nine times – it was a given it would not be easy. I was slightly disappointed that the game was not concluded in this tankōbon, but was glad that it was not as there seems to be more narrative to tell.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: They Were 11!! is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Oh dang, Yukimitsu is actually going to do something! We're getting plays that aren't just 'run fast' (though some are still just running fast) in this volume, and despite Deimon being so far behind it's actually pretty exciting how some of the plays appear to be working. The lead doesn't actually feel all that big, even though it's massive.

I like the comparison between Unsui, who has given everything to help show everyone how amazing and genius his brother Amon is, and Monta who is seeing how amazing Ikkyu is and refusing to give up.

2026 reread

"Devils have no need for heaven" goes insanely hard and this is one of the best volumes in the series... it's finally Yuki's time to shine and the emotional payoff is insane... Jumonji is SO cool... Habashira angst is back as soon as you thought it was over... and the whole narrative of natural talent vs passion and effort, of Yuki fighting vs Unsui giving up, etc... where is the nobel prize for literature!!!!!

btw I love the moto hagio reference, go read They Were 11! it's got dated opinions on gender but its some really fascinating 70s queer scifi

Halftime comes and goes with things looking bleak for the Devilbats during the first round of the Kantou tournament. Hiruma appears to have all but given up with the deficit as bad as it is against the Naga.
Unsurprisingly though, Hiruma has yet anther trick up his sleeve, working his team's trouncing into a psychological war between the Naga team. The tension and fake fight between Musashi and Hiruma lowers the guard of the overconfident champion team...
And that's when Hiruma does something crazy – he takes perennial bench warmer Yukimitsu into the huddle. Making this his playing field debut, Yukimitsu demonstrates his superior knowledge as a receive. His time on the bench and supreme intelligence has given him plenty of time to master his playbook and the Naga's strategy. Using this do his advantage Yukimitsu is able to unleash the option route upon the Naga!
The option is a great addition to the Devilbats, and finally puts Yukimitsu's intelligence to good use. Yukimitsu effectively becomes a slot receiver to complement Monta at the wide out. Option routes have exploded in professional football within the last ten years as defenses have become smaller and faster. Yukimitsu standing up to Ikkyu at cornerback is the perfect example of this. He also now becomes the Devilbats motion man, as their offense gets another dimension of confusion and misdirection to it.
The clock starts winding down on the fourth quarter and with that comes desperate measures to close the point gap. The volume ends with Hiruma throwing his laser spiraled version of the Hail Mary – the Hail Devil. Insane game so far. A defensive skirmish and blow out offensive plays to pray for a comeback win. Can't wait to see how this one actually ends. Don't know how they can top the end of the Gunmen semi-final.

The Deimon Devilbats must battle Shinryuuji and its fearsome Kongo brothers, Agon and Unsui. The mental battle is clearly between the Devilbats quarterback, Hiruma, and these fellows, but Sena will be instrumental in giving them a run for their money (run, literally; money, not so much). And what about Yukimitsu? Is he useless as everyone keeps saying, or is there a place for mediocrity on the field?

As always, watching Hiruma calculate against anyone is fantastic, but with people like the Kongos--with whom he has history, and who have a chance against him--it's just thrilling.

I think my favorite thing about this one was "Hiruma vs. the Kongo brothers." Well, let's be honest--I like anything that has Hiruma in it. The best devil quarterback ever. :D Anyway, suck on that, Shinryuuji. Agon needs a kick in the teeth and there's no one better to give it to him than Sena Kobayakawa. And I really enjoyed Yukimitsu's debut, especially Ikkyu's reaction to him.

I love when all the team is in perfect synchronisation and understand what to do without Hiruma having to clearly state it. And Yukimitsu is finally on the field!
(A moment for the fact that I really love some of the book titles)
