First of all, I found it very troubling that the Hindu mythology was listed as "some people," while Roman mythology was listed as "ancient Romans." Second of all, both Hindu & Roman beliefs were presented as foolish and outdated. And to top it all off, why do they have to depict some un-named native peoples as the only people crazy enough to live near a volcano, rebuilding in the same spot even after a tsunami?

This book allows children to read about volcanoes and other disasters in a way that they can simply understand. This book can be read with a small group after a science lesson would be taught. You could use the book as an open discussion about the comparisons between what they learned and what the book says. They can also point out new facts they learn along the way. This would be a great way to incorporate science with just a simple book discussion.
