The first 60% of this book is kids fare.
The Witch Apprentices getting back together and updating themselves on what's going on. The last 30% of the book is where all the action is where they start solving things.
This book is beast read after I think Doremi # where you have all the gangs introduced. However it wasn't that hard to follow if you didn't
The translator did a nice job too, adding in snippets for who's talking as apparently you infer who's talking by how they speak, which doesn't translate well into English. The translation however might offend people who like a localized translation with the Japanese culture complete strained out, and the text so liberal it rewrites the plot, as this text is a bit rough around the edges, but I like it.

Overall it's a good book for those that are a fan of the series. As most shoujo plots go, nothing super earth shattering happens and the plots are either magicked into success or everything is solved by talking it out.

I bought this novel for nostalgia reasons, because I really loved the anime 10? 15? years ago. I happened to see this in a second hand bookstore and was SUPER excited. And now I've read it, I'm not sure how I feel about it.

On the on hand, it feels A LOT like the anime. The characters act the same. The stories are in their essence almost exactly like the anime. Something happens. The characters talk things out or use magic and fix it. The problems are slightly bigger, as the anime really just focused on children's problems (which I loved).

On the other hand, it doesn't feel like a grown up version, despite the characters being high schoolers now. They act exactly like they did in elementary school. While there were changes before the novel, most of them get instantly turned back to something reminiscent of the anime.

I feel like this book is trying to balance old and new, but not quite succeeding. If it is aiming at the fans of the original anime, it kinda feels too childish. This novel series was released about 10 years after the anime started, which means the original audience would be in their late teens/early twenties. This series feels more like it's written for younger people, for a similar demographic as the anime itself.

The writing is a first person retelling by Doremi, but there are some short parts where she's not actually present. It's easy to read, but feels again, rather childish, and some of the things that work in anime don't really work in writing. Like reading about Doremi literally drooling when thinking about steak... it just doesn't work in text, especially not now she's no longer a little girl.

It ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, and with a lot of unresolved questions (that get literally mentioned at the end of the book with a "read about these things in the next volume")

All in all, I think this book would be way more interesting to younger readers, rather than older fans of the show. It's written like a children's book, like middle grade possibly slightly younger than that. It's not bad at all, and it was fun enough to read, but I had expected and hoped for more.
